Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greenhouse Pests: A Manual of Practice in the Control of Insects and Other Pests Attacking Ornamental Plants and Flowers Grown Under Glass in Illinois In the state as a whole, the total damage done by insects and other injurious forms of animal life is estimated at present to range from 10% to 25% of the value of all the flowers and Ornamentals grown under glass. Assuming 1570 as a fair average reduction, we can safely say that the annual crop would be worth more than it is now if the industry did not have to pay tribute to these pests. No crop is without its pests, and some have a dozen or more, so that the grower must be on his guard day and night through the grow ing season and even throughout, the year, in order to prevent all his profits from being literally eaten Up by one or another of these insidious enemies. Now the roots are attacked, now the stems and leaves, and now the flowers themselves. Sometimes only a few plants may be injured; again a whole crop may be wiped out. It is probably true that no single operation in the greenhouse yields as large returns as that which checks the depredations of insects, since any one of the major pests would be able to destroy a crop, commercially, before it could be matured if no control measures were applied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden Foes: Insect, Animal and Fungoid Pests Injurious to Fruit and Vegetable Crops, Hardy Plants, Trees, Shrubs and Greenhouse Plants, With All the Latest Remedies for Their Eradication, Etc It is true in these modern times science has come to the assistance of the farmer and gardener, and educated both in more successful ways and means of coping with pests and diseases affecting our crops; and, consequently, we are in a much better position to prevent or cure the injuries arising, or likely to arise, therefrom than our fore fathers were able to do. We know more of the life his tories of insect and animal pests; also of the various fungi and bacteria that are productive of diseases, and it is therefore possible nowadays to adopt preventive measures to a large degree that will render our crops, our plants and our trees less liable to, if not wholly free from, attack and injury. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Affecting Vegetables Ame. These insects are often suspected injuring the plants over which they are seen running, but as a rule they are only indirectly responsible. A few species, such as the large black Carpenter Ants. Form their galleries in trunks of trees, posts and timber and do a con siderable amount of damage, but the great variety of smaller species which infest our gardens do not feed upon foliage or injure growing plants. Sometimes they may be found upon unopened flower buds, but they are only attracted by some sweet secretions on the surface; as a rule their presence indicates that there is a colony of Aphids near by, which they take under their protection in order to obtain from them the sweet honey-dew exuded by these minute creatures. The worst injury for which ants are responsible is the establishmnt of colonies of Aphids upon the roots of many plants; the ants collect the eggs and take care of them during the winter and when growth is sufficiently advanced carry them to the roots and look after them during the summer, in order to have a constant supply of honey dew. These colonies increase rapidly and soon check the growth of the plant and ultimately destroy it. Where ants' nests abound, frequent digging and stirring of the soil, and in field cultivation repeated disking and harrowing, will get rid of many, or they may be treated with carbon bisulphide; a small quantity should be poured into the entrance of the nest or into a hole made with a stick and quickly covered with earth: the fumes will speed ily kill all the inmates. It is best to perform the Operation towards even ing when all the ants are within the nest This is a very effective mode of getting rid of the large colonies which make mounds of rubbish on lawns and in fields. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common Fungus and Insect Pests of Growing Vegetable Crops Diseases of plants, for convenience of consideration. May be grouped as follows: First, those caused by (a) insects and other animals. (0) fungi, (c) bacteria, (d) slime moulds. And (e) flowering planta; and. Second, the unfavorable action of soil, drought, heat, wind, lightning, frost, and sun scald. Sometimes two or more of these to bring about a diseased condition of the plant. In particular we may note that plants which have been rendered unhealthy by excessive mois ture. Excessive dryness, or imperfect access of light and air. Are more liable to attack from insects and fungi. It is not always easy to tell when a plant is in a diseased condition, for the condition of a healthy plant varies between fixed limits, and it is only when these limits are exceeded in either direction that the life of the plant is threatened, and there is disease instead of health. We sometimes group the causes which bring about diseases in plants as external and internal, but it is very probable that the ao-called internal causes will be found to be nothing more than external causes acting in an indirect manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Attacking Squash, Cucumber, and Allied Plants in Connecticut A paper on this subject was published in the report of this Station for 1908, page 805, but it has long been out of print. The present paper follows the plan Of the earlier one, but has been revised, enlarged, and wholly rewritten, and is published in this form so that the information can lie placed in the hands of truck crop growers throughout the state. For the past five years, cucurbitaceous plants have been grown each year at the Station farm at Mount Carmel for the purpose of studying the insects attacking them and methods of control. Consequently this paper is more than a compilation, and embodies the results of our own experiments and experience. Cucumbers, squashes, pumpkins and melons are grown rather extensively in Connecticut, and are attacked and Often severely injured by a number of insect pests. For the hasty identification of these insects the reader is referred to the following key revised from the earlier paper mentioned above.
