In 1990 and 1991, 96 plantations in that region were assessed, with the following data collected for planted trees and natural regeneration: tree species, site, seedbed type, height, and density. Some plots were destructively sampled to determine total tree age in order to estimate the rate of ingress of natural regeneration. Results have relevance for predicting the probability of occurrence and density of natural regeneration, and for the timing of regeneration surveys.

Vegetation types were amalgamated into ecologically similar groups or treatment units. Most sites were classified as black spruce-jack pine/feathermoss with intact/mixed forest floor seedbeds. Both the rate of natural ingress over the first seven years of stand development and the resultant stand structure and composition are noted.
