Book excerpt: L'objectif de cette recherche est de mesurer sur une période allant de 1995 à 2017 l'impact des infrastructures de transport routier sur la croissance économique dans la CEMAC à travers le taux de bitumage des routes et les flux d'échanges sur ces routes. Nous avons utilisé les logiciels SPSS, AMOS 25 pour la modélisation des équations structurelles et xlStat pour les tests de régressions. Et, le résultat de nos estimations montre une corrélation forte entre ces deux variables. Nous concluons, que le taux de bitumage influe bien sur le trafic économique entre le Cameroun, la RCA et le Congo et, par ricochet, a un impact significatif sur la croissance de ces pays. Aussi, les infrastructures de transport routier jouent un rôle important dans le processus d'échange, de transformation et d'intégration économique via l'augmentation des flux entre pays.

Only in October 1948 did this racial barrier start to break down, when an elderly teacher named George McLaurin became the first African American to enroll at the university. McLaurin’s case, championed by the NAACP, drew national attention and culminated in a U.S. Supreme Court decision. In Breaking Down Barriers, distinguished historian David W. Levy chronicles the historically significant—and at times poignant—story of McLaurin’s two-year struggle to secure his rights. Through exhaustive research, Levy has uncovered as much as we can know about George McLaurin (1887–1968), a notably private person. A veteran educator, he was fully qualified for admission as a graduate student in the university’s School of Education. When the university denied his application, solely on the basis of race, McLaurin received immediate assistance from the NAACP and its lead attorney Thurgood Marshall, who brilliantly defended his case in state and federal courts. On his very first day of class, as Levy details, McLaurin had to sit in a special alcove, separate from the white students in the classroom. Photographs of McLaurin in this humiliating position set off a firestorm of national outrage. Dozens of other African American men and women followed McLaurin to the university, and Levy reviews the many bizarre contortions that university officials had to perform, often against their own inclinations, to accord with the state’s mandate to keep black and white students apart in classrooms, the library, cafeterias and dormitories, and the football stadium. Ultimately, in 1950, the U.S. Supreme Court, swayed by the arguments of Marshall and his co-counsel Robert Carter, ruled in McLaurin’s favor. The decision, as Levy explains, stopped short of toppling the decades-old doctrine of “separate but equal.” But the case led directly to the 1954 landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which finally declared that flawed policy unconstitutional.

Competition policy includes antitrust policy (including merger regulation and control) but is often extended to include international trade measures and other policies that affect the structure, conduct, and performance of individual industries. This study includes country studies of competition policy in Western Europe, North America, and the Far East (with a focus on Japan) in the light of increasingly globalized activities of business firms. Areas where there are major differences in philosophy, policy, or practice are identified, with emphasis on those differences that could lead to economic costs and international friction. Alternatives for eliminating these costs and frictions are discussed, including unilateral policy changes, bilateral or multilateral harmonization of policies, and creation of new international regimes to supplement or replace national or regional regimes.

UN HABITAT (2006) pointed out that Asia and Africa will host largest urban population in 21st century and cities will continue to be sites of extreme inequality. It is feared that Asian cities may not be able to cope with the ongoing urbanization and urbanization of poverty further adds to the challenges. This edited volume addresses to the challenges thrown by urban poverty for sustainable cities in developing countries and also presents some strategies adopted in these countries to deal with these challenges. The volume contains seventeen articles which are divided into three sections. Section-1, entitled 'Urban Poverty in Developing Countries: Some Issues', contains five articles dealing with urban poverty and delineates certain issues related to it. Section-II, entitled 'Urban Poverty in India: Empirical Reality', contains five articles which present the empirical situation of urban poverty in India. Section-III, entitled 'Urban poverty and Strategies for Sustainable Cities', anthologizes seven articles dealing with some strategies to grapple with the problem of urban poverty in developing countries and the outcome of these efforts. All these efforts to achieve sustainable cities are not producing desired results. Cities cannot be sustainable if rural areas, neighborhoods and communities are not sustainable. So focus must shift to these settlements as well.

Boko Haram’s goal of an Islamic Caliphate, starting in the Borno State in the North East that will eventually cover the areas of the former Kanem-Borno Empire, is a rejection of the modern state system forced on it by the West. The central theme of this volume examines the relationship between the failure of the state-building project in Nigeria and the outbreak and nature of insurgency. At the heart of the Boko Haram phenomenon is a country racked with cleavages, making it hard for Nigeria to cohere as a modern state. Part I introduces this theme and places the Boko Haram insurgency in a historical context. There are, however, multiple cleavages in Nigeria ̶ ethnic, regional, cultural, and religious ̶ and Part II examines the different state-society dynamics fuelling the conflict. Political grievances are common to every society; however, what gives Boko Haram the space to express such grievances through violence? Importantly, this volume demonstrates that the insurgency is, in fact, a reflection of the hollowness within Nigeria’s overall security. Part III looks at the responses to Boko Haram by Nigeria, neighbouring states, and external actors. For Western actors, Boko Haram is seen as part of the "global war on terror" and the fact that it has pledged allegiance to ISIS encourages this framing. However, as the chapters here discuss, this is an over-simplification of Boko Haram and the West needs to address the multiple dimension of Boko Haram. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, insurgencies, African politics, war and conflict studies, and IR in general.
