Malheureusement, la pluspart des recherches dans ce domaine n'ont touché que de très peu le monde des petites et moyennes entreprises confrontées d'une manière très brutale au turbulence de l'environnement ; et c'est dans cet ordre d'idée que se situe notre recherche en analysant l'impact de certaines variables de management stratégique sur la performance exprimée en terme de rentabilité des capitaux investis des PME/PMI. Les résultats de notre recherche se résument ainsi : que la performance en R.O.I. ne dépend ni de la taille de l'entreprise ni de son secteur d'activité ; qu'il existe une forte correlation entre R.O.I. et la planification stratégique formelle ; le processus et le style de prise des décisions stratégiques ; le système d'information, les variables d'environnement, l'équilibre des fonctions, les outils de gestion et le contrôle stratégique.

The concept of the stakeholder is generally applied to parties that affect or are affected by the activities of private or public organizations. Distinct from shareholders, stakeholders are those individuals, entities or communities that have a connection with the activities of a corporation, a firm or an organization. The notion of the stakeholder is intimately linked to a conception of the business firm as an entity founded on negotiated governance, in which the maximization of value for the shareholder is not the ultimate criterion. In this model, issues and interests that are not directly associated with shareholders and investors, but which go beyond capital to encompass the concerns of civil society, are considered to be of central importance. This book provides a broad overview of stakeholder theory, presenting it as an ethical approach to strategic management that is both pragmatic and applicable to developing democratic practices within corporations, while at the same time suggesting ways in which elements of a social contract can be elaborated within the context of globalization.

Designing a national land-use plan will territorialize development by creating a more balanced national economic space. The new land-use scheme will be based on dynamic, competitive, regional economies in which the urbanization of regional capitals and secondary towns is sufficiently controlled to allow true development hubs to emerge.

Book excerpt: This volume investigates the relationship between economic globalization and institutions, or global governance, challenging the common assumption that globalization and institutionalization are essentially processes which exclude each other. Instead, the contributors to this book show that globalization is better perceived as a dual process of institutional change at the national level, and institution building at the transnational level. Rich, supporting empirical evidence is provided along with a theoretical conceptualization of the main actors, mechanisms and conditions involved in trickle-up and trickle-down trajectories through which national institutional systems are being transformed and transnational rules emerge. The book collectively argues that transnational institution building is one of the most striking features of the current period of internationalization. As a consequence, debates concerning globalization and global governance have to be reformulated. The authors posit that globalization is not threatening governance, but in fact globalization reflects a particular type of governance. The dilemma, therefore, is not between globalization and institutions, but between different meanings of governance and the balance that should be reached between them. Globalization and Institutions will be of special interest to academics and scholars of institutional economics, globalization and management. However, with its focus on two key debates for which there is clearly rising interest, many social scientists will find the book of interest.

However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Book excerpt: After the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba faced its greatest economic crisis, estimated to have been three times more severe than the Great Depression. Between 1989 and 1992, imports needed for industrialized Cuban agriculture were dramatically cut. 50% of its oil, 75% of the fertilizer, and 65% of its pesticides were lost, along with animal feed and basic food imports. Cuba is the world's first national experiment in sustainable agriculture. With government policies declaring food and freedom from hunger as basic human rights, Cuba implemented the National Food Program. Cuban agriculture was reconstructed to be small scale, low input, and biologically based. The results of this experiment demonstrates to other countries that export-based chemically intensive industrial agriculture is not the only way to feed a country.
