Book A French Grammar for Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint

Download or read book A French Grammar for Schools and Colleges Classic Reprint written by William Henry Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar for Schools and Colleges Having regard to the importance of securing accurate pronunciation from the very outset, care has been taken to facilitate the work of the teacher in this respect by giving a phonetic transcription of all vocabularies and paradigms, under the conviction that in no other way can distinctions in sounds be intelligibly explained. In order, however, not to confuse the beginner with too minute distinctions, half long vowels have not been indicated, and the same rule has been observed, for the most part, with regard to such stressed vowels as are optionally long or short. The elementary exercises are based almost exclusively upon connected pieces of French, dealing with a variety of topics relating to every-day life, and make provision for both oral and written practice. They have been provided in abundance so as to admit of selection and variety, and to afford ample material for review. In both the elemen tary and advanced exercises, regard has been had to the requirements of such teachers as feel the necessity for a large amount of work of this kind in order to ensure ade quate and practical knowledge on the part of the pupil. Part I. Consists of a series of lessons on the elements of grammar as an essential preparation for easy reading, while Part II. Furnishes a systematic grammar of modern French for later study and general reference. To this part a se ries of exercises has been added dealing with the various topics treated in the text. It was thought best to group these exercises together at the end, in order not to impair the usefulness of the Grammar as a book of reference by inserting the exercises immediately after the paragraphs to which they refer. Each exercise, however, is furnished with section references which will enable the pupil to turn readily to the theory upon which the exercises are based. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in French IN preparing this book, particular attention has been paid to the needs of those beginning the study of a foreign language. The arrangement of the book is designed to combine the inductive and deductive methods of teaching French, and, as far as possible, to eliminate the disadvantages of each. The French vocabulary is based on the reading selection and is presented, not by artificial lists, but according to the natural principle of association of ideas. From the outset, connected passage: for reading are given; they include a broad range of everyday, conversational topics, and many incidental allusions to historical and literary subjects that allow fur ther expansion in the oral work of the classroom. The book readily lends itself to the needs of classes in which the advantages of the direct method are combined with those of the grammatical method. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the French Language, With Practical Exercises In this edition the errors in the former publications are carefully corrected, the several expressions which did not so well please in the course of practice, have been altered, and every improvement added, that could tend to facilitate the attainment of the French language. It having been suggested, by some gentlemen, to whose judgment the Author pays the greatest deference, that the irregular verbs, being arranged in alphabetical order, in the body of the book, would be a considerable improvement to the work, and facilitate the progress of the scholar, this is done in the present edition. The primitives of the irregular verbs are conjugated at length, and at the end of each are given their several compounds, with large exercises, both upon the primitives and compounds. Book A Compendious French Grammar Vol 1

Download or read book A Compendious French Grammar Vol 1 written by A. Hjalmar Édgren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendious French Grammar, Vol. 1: In Two Independent Parts, Introductory and Advanced From the Preface to the Grammar of which this forms the First Part. To meet a twofold need, first, of an easy and rapid intro duction to reading, secondly, of a critical exposition of both grammar and syntax, the book is divided into two parts, each forming an independent whole by itself. The First Part is intended to enable the learner to begin reading with profit at the earliest practicable moment, or in from three to six weeks. It contains simply an elementary outline of the essentials of French pronunciation and accidence (some indispensable syntactical directions included), as well as accompanying exercises. The rules are purposely few, and as simple as has seemed compatible with accuracy of state ment. Details and exceptions are left to the Second Part, where each of the subjects contained here, as well as others, receives fuller and independent treatment. Though entirely elementary, this First Part is thought to contain sufficient material for its purpose. It may even be all that is needed where only a minimum of time can be given to grammar, or where scholars are too young to undertake a more earnest study of details. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar: Containing, Besides the Rules of the Language, a Complete Treatise on Prepositions The subject Of Syntax has not been separately treated in this Grammar, because this division is entirely conventional, and is Often troublesome to the student when he is seeking for a rule, causing confusion in his mind, and a loss Of time, which should be carefully avoided. The Verbs will be found conjugated, on the same page, under their four different forms, so as to catch the eye at once, and to enable the pupil to compare them W1th facility; and all the irregular verbs are conjugated, with such remarks and tables, as to ren der this tedious task comparatively easy. All that can be said on Participles has been carefully arranged under different heads, according to the decisions Of the French Academy and Of our best grammarians. Book Practical French Grammar

Download or read book Practical French Grammar written by Victor Spiers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical French Grammar: For Schools and Colleges The chief merit claimed by this Primer is its incomplete ness. It seems to have been forgotten that grammar - like examinations - is a means, not an end. Grammar-books generally aim at being complete 3, hence books that are fit for masters and savants are put into the hands of school-boys and girls, and children are plagued with words and forms which are only to be found in grammars and dictionaries, and which will never be seen again during many years of reading. Public examiners add to the evil by setting papers upon the grammars in use; the new grammars are written to contain the odd words and rare exceptions which are asked in public examinations; and so, generations of boys and girls are led over this weary round, with the result that they spend eight or ten of their most valuable years, trying to master French gram mar, but never succeeding, and bearing towards French grammar in particular, and French in general, an unmixed hatred for the rest of their days. The school training in French of our boys and girls re sembles the fretful labour of the squirrel in his cage, and its results are as fruitful. Three, or four, or five hours a week are devoted to French between the ages of seven to fourteen, and four, or three, or two hours a week between the ages of fourteen and eighteen 3 this is a large amount of time 5 what is there to show for it? Very little, or at any rate, the result is far from proportionate to the time and trouble. The reason of it is that the principles in vogue are wrong: we have too much theory and too little practice. And at the root of the evil lies grammar as used and taught at the present day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Practical French Grammar

Download or read book A Practical French Grammar written by William Dwight Whitney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical French Grammar: With Exercises and Illustrative Sentences From French Authors This volume is the outcome of the author's experience as a teacher of French during my years in one of the departments of Yale College. The design had in view in it has been to furnish for such classes, and for preparatory schools (where training in French is coming to be more and more demanded), a grammar which should combine the advantages of practice and theory in a higher degree than others now existing. To this end, the most important facts of the language have been grouped and arranged in a series of Lessons, in an order suggested by practical con venience, each Lesson being accompanied by sufficient Exercises. These Lessons constitute the First or Practical Part of the grammar, which it is expected that every learner of the language will work through. Its general plan, while not unlike the method followed in many gram mars, is so far accordant especially with that of the widely used and valued conversation-grammar of Otto, that it may fairly be said to be founded upon the latter - though no more than that, since both text and Exercises are en titely new, and deviations from the older plan not only numerous, but of much importance. As one example among many, a more systematic course is followed in the important item of the learner's introduction to the verbs all the principal forms are learned and practised, one after another, before any complete paradigm is set forth; and the commonest and most useful of the irregular verbs are worked in by degrees, before they are taken up as a body.
