Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indiana's Roll of Honor, Vol. 1 Were this Government destroyed by the hands of her own misguided and infatuated children, it would be the deadliest blow that has ever been given to the cause of virtue, and the greatest obstruction that has ever happened to the onward march of civil and religious liberty. Unto America are turned the anxious eyes of all nations, to see the result of the experiment we are now making of popular self-government, and of the ability of a free people to sustain the Government of their own choice. From this land, consecrated to freedom by the blood of our fathers, goes forth the only ray of hope to cheer the fainting heart of the oppressed nations of the earth. Shall this ray, now so dim and flickering, be totally extinguished? Destroy this Government, and what becomes of the fair genius of liberty which has been driven out from older climes? Is she, broken-hearted, doomed to be an out cast' in the land of her adoption? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, Vol. 2: March, 1906, the Old Indian Traders of Indiana We can scarcely realize, at this day, the extent to which the Indian trade was carried on, both in the amount of goods sold, and the furs and the peltries received in exchange. When the country was first visited by the traders, the animals affording these commodities were found in great abundance. The Buffalo ranged in large numbers over the prairies, of Illinois and those of our own State bordering on the Wabash, as well as in the forests in the vicinity of the salt springs. The Beaver, the re mains of wli'ose dams are yet to be found in many parts of the State, especially in the northern portion, was to be found in many of the northern streams. The Bear, Elk, Deer, Panther, Otter, Wolf, Wildcat, Fox and Raccoon, were also to be found in considerable numbers in various portions of the State. The Indians not having any weapons with which to take these ani mals but the simple stone-headed arrow, nor any clothing but the rude elk or deer skin, the introduction of the gun and mer chandise by the traders, soon afforded both parties a rich har vest. And although the amount of furs produced was after wards very much diminished by the destruction of game, yet it still continued large for a long time; and the trade yet yielded the traders large gains so late as about the year 1838, when the principal body of the Pottawattamie tribe of Indians emlgrated west of the Mississippi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, 1905, Vol. 1: First Quarter Mr. Dillon was one of the many in the world's history who hav not prospered according to their deserts. He clove to his work wit that un agging passion which should distinguish the true worke in the exercise of his natural talent, but his books brought hi little remuneration. Unworldly, simple-minded and idealistic, wit little regard for self, he was illy qualified to contend for the world' rewards. A few stanch friends, who were drawn to him by hi ability and worth and beauty of character, exercised over him sort of paternal care, and through their efiorts he was appointed t various public offices which for thirty years afforded him a living From 1845 to 1851 he was State Librarian, then assistant Secretar of State and Secretary of the Board of Agriculture, and after tha an appointee to a clerkship in the Department of the Interior a Washington City, where he lived twelve years. The last four year of his life he spent in Indianapolis, poor almost to the verge 0 want, his friends afterward suspected, although, with characteristi reserve, he kept that fact to himself. There are many who remem ber the retired, gentle old man with the never-absent side-glasse concealing his eyes. Being unmarried and entirely alone as re garded blood ties, he occupied a poorly-furnished room by himsel in the top of the old Johnson block, where the State Life buildin now stands. Here he died on the a7th of February, 1879. No until his effects were examined was it known that he was so poor His very books had gone one by one to the second-hand store, lik household treasures to the pawn-shop, and his friends agree in be lieving that the fear of want hastened his end. Download or read book Indiana Historical Society Publications Vol 8 Classic Reprint written by Indiana Historical Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indiana Historical Society Publications, Vol. 8 From a book called Evansville and Its Men of M ark, the following notice is taken of Judge Lockhart: Around the name of James Lockhart cluster the recollections of a brave and gallant spirit; a refined and cultivated man; an erudite jurist; and a politician who understood so well the wants and necessities of Indiana. He was born in Auburn, N. Y., on the thirteenth of February, 1806. The eldest of ten children, he was forced to assist his father, Ephraim L. Lockhart, in the carding and fulling-mill business, and served a full apprenticeship in the same. During his leisure time, he devoted himself to studying the preparatory books for college, and enjoyed the privilege of a partial course. Owing to his lack of means, he was forced to relinquish his hope of being a graduate. He also studied law; but was not admitted to practice till after his arrival at Evansville, in 1832. His name was familiar to the people as a leading lawyer for many years. His strong will and determined mind caused him to study carefully the cases presented to his charge; and he, in spite of every obstacle, took a commanding position in the profes sion. For several years he acted as prosecuting attorney; and for over seven years he served as Circuit Judge. Many are the pleasing memories of Judge Lockhart; and he must have been an impartial and popular magistrate.
