Book Future of Coal in India

Download or read book Future of Coal in India written by Rahul Tongia, Anurag Sehgal, Puneet Kamboj and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain observed, “I'm in favour of progress; it's change I don't like.” Coal dominates Indian energy because it’s available domestically and cheap (especially without a carbon tax). If the global focus is on the energy transition, how does India ensure a just transition? Managing winners and losers will be the single largest challenge for India’s energy policy. Coal is entrenched in a complex ecosystem. In some states, it’s amongst the largest contributors to state budgets. The Indian Railways, India’s largest civilian employer, is afloat because it overcharges coal to offset under-recovery from passengers. Coal India Limited, the public sector miner that produces 85% of domestic coal, is the world’s largest coal miner. But despite enormous reserves, India imports about a quarter of consumption. On the flip side, coal faces inevitable pressure from renewable energy, which is the cheapest option for new builds. However, there is significant coal-based power capacity already in place, some of which is underutilized, or even stranded. Low per-capita energy consumption means India must still grow its energy supply. Before India can phase out coal, it must first achieve a plateau of coal. How this happens cost-effectively and with least resistance isn’t just a technical or economic question, it depends on the political economy of coal and its alternatives. Some stakeholders want to kill coal. A wiser option may be to first clean it up, instead of wishing it away. Across 18 chapters, drawing from leading experts in the field, we examine all aspects of coal’s future in India. We find no easy answers, but attempt to combine the big picture with details, bringing them together to offer a range of policy options.

Book The Coal Nation

Download or read book The Coal Nation written by Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social science research is emerging on a range of issues around large and small-scale mining, connecting them to broader social, cultural, political, historical and economic factors rather than purely measuring the environmental impacts of mining. Within this broader context of global scholarly attention on extractive industries, this book explores two specific contexts: the cultural politics of coal and coal mining, within the context of one particular country, India, which is the third largest coal producer in the world. Both contexts are special; with its separate Ministry, coal occupies pride of place in contemporary India, shaping the energy future and influencing the economic and political milieu of the country. The supremacy attributed to coal mining in contemporary India represents how ’coal nationalism’ has replaced ’coal colonialism’ in the country, turning this commodity into an icon, a national symbol. In recent years the extraction of coal in forest-covered resource peripheries has dispossessed and pauperised many tribal and rural communities who have used these resource-rich lands for their livelihoods for generations. The combustion of coal to produce electricity constitutes the compelling need, and the factor that prevents the Indian state from fully engaging with the impending realities of a climate-changed future. All these reasons make the timing of this book of crucial importance. In particular, The Coal Nation explores the complex history of coal in India; from its colonial legacies to contemporary cultural and social impacts of mining; land ownership and moral resource rights; protective legislation for coal as well as for the indigenous and local communities; the question of legality, illegitimacy and illicit mining and of social justice. Presenting cutting-edge multidisciplinary social science research on coal and mining in India, The Coal Nation initiates a productive dialogue amongst academics and between them and activists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal Industry in West Bengal: A Historical Analysis of Production, Price, Wage, Employment and Investment, is a pioneering attempt which has determined the quantitative relationship between the parameters (i) production and price, (ii) employment and output, (iii) employment and wage, (iv) average productivity and real wage, (v) size of firms and average productivity, and (vi) size of firms and rate of profit, covering a wide range of data from 1901-1976 on production, employment, productivity, wages and prices of the Coal Industry in West Bengal. This book has examined the changes in wage-share from 1901 through 1976. The values of the parameters obtained through the fitting of Cobb-Doughlas production function and SMAC (ARROW-CHENERY-MINHAS-SULOW) function have also been reported here. This work determined the factors governing the investment and relationship between the production and investment in the Coal Industry of West Bengal.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is the third largest coal producer in the world and the eighth largest importer. With annual production of 310 million tonnes and imports of almost 25 million tonnes, coal provides one-third of energy supply in India. The Indian government forecasts huge increases in electricity capacity based on coal, and a financially viable electricity industry will be necessary to support reforms in the coal industry. This report describes the Indian coal sector, and comments on government policies and the performance of India's largely state-owned coal companies. There is a substantial need for reforms in India's coal sector to improve efficiency and competitiveness.

Book Coal phase down or phase out

Download or read book Coal phase down or phase out written by Rakesh Kacker and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal has been in the news in the last few months for various reasons, the main ones being the shortfall in its supply and its rising prices. Yet, the more pressing need today is switch to cleaner alternatives to save the planet from the adverse effects of climate change, which is exacerbated by carbon dioxide emitted from burning coal. Coal: phase down or phase out brings together salient facts and figures about coal in India and the world to give the reader an overview of the trends in reserves, production, prices, and utilization of coal. More than that, the book highlights the major problems – particularly those related to the environment – that confront the coal sector and not only traces the evolution of relevant policies in India from the nationalization of the sector and the re-entry of the private sector but also explains the forces that shaped those policies. The book attempts to meet the objectives of the ’Concerned Citizen’ series by putting across these different facets of the coal industry simply, clearly, and concisely. Where necessary, some technical terms and concepts are explained so that a lay person can understand them easily. Coal is a major energy source in India today—which is why it is important for the citizens to understand the sector and to learn how the problems associated with India’s heavy dependence on coal can be tacked. It is hoped that this book will help to meet these objectives. Contents: Foreword by Pratyush Sinha A perspective on coal industry by Partha S Bhattacharyya Preface What is coal?
