Book Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York

Download or read book Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York written by Samuel S. Purple and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In scarcely 200 pages, Professor Kuhns has surveyed the factors that compelled roughly 100,000 emigrants from the Palatinate, Wurtenberg, Zweibrucken, and other principalities in southern Germany to settle in Pennsylvania between 1683 and 1776 and establish a new way of life in their adopted homeland. Most of these immigrants were farmers, and their customs and manners are recounted in an examination of housing, provisions, agricultural methods, superstitions, and so forth. There is a chapter on language, literature, and education and a separate appendix on German family names. Perhaps the most informative chapter in the book covers the extraordinarily diverse religious life of these Protestant Germans, which, while dominated by the Lutheran and Reformed churches, also accommodated Moravians, Mennonites, Brethren, Dunkards, Seventh-Day Baptists, Schwenckfelders, and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1609, Hendrick Hudson discovered the river which now bears his name, and introduced the Dutch to North America. As early as 1614, the area was known as New Netherland. Serious colonization by the Dutch began in 1623. By 1626, the Dutch had bought Manhattan Island from the resident Indians and described themselves as prosperous. In April of 1628, Dom. Jonas Michaelius organized, and presided over, the first church. This collection of marriage records gives: the names of the bride and groom, the date of marriage (day, month and year), and the place of marriage. The list is in Dutch with some words, phrases and abbreviations translated into English. A description of Dutch marriage laws and customs, particularly those of the Reformed Dutch Church, is included in the introduction. Also of interest is a list of ministers of the church and the dates they served. This work was originally published in the Collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, Volume 1. A full name index augments the text.

Book Marriage Records of Brunswick County Virginia 1730 1852

Download or read book Marriage Records of Brunswick County Virginia 1730 1852 written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1976 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation was originally undertaken at the request of the Board of Supervisors of Brunswick County, who suggested that Miss Fothergill copy and index the Brunswick County marriage bonds from 1752, when they first appear among miscellaneous papers, until the commencement of vital records in 1852. When once she set to the task, Miss Fothergill discovered that she could improve the basic list of marriages by adding inferential marriage proofs from estate settlements, wills, and deeds. The resulting compilation, running from 1730 to 1852, is a composite of more than 3,000 marriage records. As is customary in such compilations, men are listed in alphabetical order, with an index of brides comprising a separate section. Incidental information found among the records, and employed here, includes references to places of residence and to guardians, sureties, and parents. All told the work indentifies 7,500 brides, grooms, parents and sureties, and the exact date of the marriage or bond. With an improved index.
