Download or read book Eyes to the Wind written by Ady Barkan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “gripping story of resistance and the triumph of human will” (Senator Elizabeth Warren), activist and subject of the documentary Not Going Quietly Ady Barkan explores his life with ALS and how his diagnosis gave him a profound new understanding of his commitment to social justice for all. Ady Barkan loved taking afternoon runs on the California coast and holding his newborn son, Carl. But one day, he noticed a troubling weakness in his hand. At first, he brushed it off as carpal tunnel syndrome, but after a week of neurological exams and two MRIs, he learned the cause of the problem: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. At age thirty-two, Ady was given just three to four years to live. Yet despite the devastating diagnosis, he refused to let his remaining days go to waste. Eyes to the Wind is a rousing memoir featuring intertwining storylines about determination, perseverance, and how to live a life filled with purpose and intention. The first traces Ady’s battle with ALS: how he turned the initial shock and panic from his diagnosis into a renewed commitment to social justice—not despite his disability but because of it. The second, told in flashbacks, illustrates Ady’s journey from a goofy political nerd to a prominent figure in the enduring fight for equity and justice whose “selfless activism fighting to make health care a right should be an inspiration to us all” (Senator Bernie Sanders). From one of the most vocal advocates for social justice, Eyes to the Wind’s “primary question is existential: how to live when you are dying? Barkan’s answer is to share, open up, act, and capital-R Resist, and his memoir, clearly and candidly written, establishes a legacy” (Booklist).

Download or read book Rembrandt Is in the Wind written by Russ Ramsey and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do art and faith intersect? How does art help us see our own lives more clearly? What can we understand about God and humanity by looking at the lives of artists? Striving for beauty, art also reveals what is broken. It presents us with the tremendous struggles and longings common to the human experience. And it says a lot about our Creator too. Great works of art can speak to the soul in a unique way. Rembrandt Is in the Wind is an invitation to discover some of the world's most celebrated artists and works and how each of them illuminates something about God, people, and the purpose of life. Part art history, part biblical study, part philosophy, and part analysis of the human experience, this book is nonetheless all story. From Michelangelo to Vincent van Gogh to Edward Hopper, the lives of the artists in this book illustrate the struggle of living in this world and point to the beauty of the redemption available to us in Christ. Each story is different. Some conclude with resounding triumph while others end in struggle. But all of them raise important questions about humanity's hunger and capacity for glory, and all of them teach us to love and see beauty. "The artists featured in these pages—artists who devoted their lives and work to what is good, true, and beautiful—remind us that we can, and should, do the same." —Karen Swallow Prior, author of On Reading Well

Download or read book The Wind written by Jeremy Bendik-Keymer and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2018 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Part primer, part parable, part elegy for the depth and decency we sacrifice daily to the order of self-possession, The Wind invites us to enjoy it inventively .... A philosopher coming up against the limits of philosophy's forms of communication ("Philosophy, without being in touch, is always abstract"), Bendik-Keymer courts a thoughtfulness in which wonder practically circumvents theory. Energized by "utopian anger," he invokes the clearing, shaking energies of wind against the violent social rigidities we accept as normal. The wind, impersonal, is the figure through which to keep the dynamic inter-personal in view. ... I admire this book's inventiveness, its willingness to break with discipline in pursuing a wider vision of accountability." (Sarah Gridley, author of "Weather Eye Open" and "Loom") A process begun in Pisa, Italy in April of 2016 during a workshop on political theory in the Anthropocene, The Wind An Unruly Living is a philosophical exercise (askêsis, translated, following Ignatius of Loyola, as "spiritual exercise"). In his exercise, Bendik-Keymer throws to the void: the ideology of self-ownership from a society of possession. By using the Stoic kanôn, the rule of living by phûsis, he follows an element. Unhappily for the Stoic and happily for us, the wind is unruly. A swerve of currents through a social fabric, it's full of holes, all holely. Stretch and stitch as you want, it might settle more shapely tattered into light, but it will never become whole. The wind's only holesome.

Download or read book Go By The Four Winds written by Barbara Madrid and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If a person commits a crime against another people, and they are someday sorrowful of this crime, they will ask forgiveness from the person; we may or may not be forgiven; if we are not forgiven, either way we need to let it go. They will forgive you in their time, when it is right for them, that is the Creator’s job, not yours. In asking forgiveness from the Creator, you need to let it go. The Creator immediately will forgive us once we ask it of Him. It is our human nature to think, sometimes our crimes are too horrific in nature. The human in us tells us Creator can’t forgive those; it is the human in us that makes us think, it is the human in us we need to turn off. Only then is when we listen to our heart. The Creator does not have a court with a judge, jury or prosecutor; there is only One, Him. He does not have a scale or measure to determine or compare one crime to another, to Him a crime is a crime, if the crime is being an adulterer, a liar, or a murderer, to Him they are all the same, the punishment is the same. What matters is not the crime, but that you were spiritual enough to ask forgiveness from our Creator. Don’t let the human in you think you cannot be forgiven, that is Satan influencing you, Satan will want you to think you are no good and can’t possibly be forgiven. DO NOT listen to that one. Let your heart, your spirit take over with the understanding it is done. The Creator wants you to know you do not repeatedly need to be forgiven for the same crime. You have been forgiven, so you are to go on as He intended. He created us to be happy, so that is what you will do. And you are to be sure you forgive others for their crimes against you. That is just how it works.”

In the New World life is better than fair for Mary - until grim misfortune finds her. A freakish wave during a monstrous storm off the coast of Florida sweeps her overboard and she is lost. When Elizabeth exceeds her authority and ventures to Portuguese-held Macau, she is introduced to a powerful Chinese merchant named Féng Wú - and to the plentiful opium served liberally at the House of a Thousand Pleasures. When Elizabeth is later betrayed a ship is lost and the crew is slaughtered. As Elizabeth falters Mary, having survived her misfortunes, returns. When Mary learns that the Company has seized her ships and men because of Elizabeth’s foolishness, she must agree to sail into war alongside the Dutch to free them. Once she fulfills her obligations to the Company, Mary will sail on to Macau where she will introduce herself to the men who murdered her crew... “… [P]aced like an adventure movie, filled with sea battles, colorful bit players, and double crosses … a rousing, sprawling yarn about two indefatigable pirate women.” - Kirkus Reviews
