This point pleased the patron so heartily that he hit the donkey across the hind leg to test his temper. The Rat showed his teeth in a grin of satisfaction, and without even a word to the boy was gone. Follow me now and be spry, said the rug-maker, and led the way into a low shed where bales Of rugs in burlap were piled high, and in a great bin were count less balls of yarn, blue and grey, red and brown, yel low, black and white. Next to the bin was another enormous pile of yarn, undyed, and this in big bundles the rug man and one of his coolies began loading upon the donkey's back, tying it on with ropes, and balancing the load with great skill. When they had finished, the gentle face Of patient little Brother looked out from under a mountain of yam - enough to tax the broad back of a dray horse. • Author : Charles Holcombe

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Han written by Charles Holcombe and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1994-10-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Holcombe's study of the society and thought of the Eastern Jin (318-420) elite is a valuable addition to what has . . . been a rather thin English-language literature on early medieval history. In the Shadow of the Han makes a compelling case ... that the 'period of disunity' between the Han and the Tang has been an unjustly neglected area. . . . It will prove stimulating reading for early medieval specialists, and . . . [for others] it will provide a highly competent and readable survey of a period that to this point has been poorly covered. —China Review International, Spring 1996 "The Period of Division between the Han and Sui/Tang has not received the attention it deserves in the West, for our views of Chinese history have frequently been distorted by the identification of success and civilisation with great and long-lasting dynasties. The centuries which followed the fall of the Han, however, were valuable not only for China's future development, but also as an occasion of human experience. Professor Holcombe has made an important contribution to our understanding of medieval China, and his work should do much to encourage the study of this formative period of philosophy and history." —R. R. C. de Crespigny, Australian National University "Historical scholarship on the Southern dynasties has long languished as a moribund offshoot of the study of Chinese poetry and religion. In the Shadow of the Han approaches this challenging period with a much broader sensitivity to the elite culture of the time, placing it within a clearly conceived socioeconomic and political context. The intellectual puzzles of Neo-Taoism and hsüan-hsüeh have never been more lucidly grounded in a credible historical world. This is a pioneering study that puts every student of early medieval China in Charles Holcombe's debt." —Dennis Grafflin, Bates College

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from Mecca: Globalizing the Muslim Caribbean is the first academic work on Muslims in the English-speaking Caribbean. Khan focuses on the fiction, poetry and music of Islam in Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica, combining archival research, ethnography, and literary analysis to argue for a historical continuity of Afro- and Indo-Muslim presence and cultural production in the Caribbean: from Arabic-language autobiographical and religious texts written by enslaved Sufi West Africans in nineteenth century Jamaica, to early twentieth century fictions of post-indenture South Asian Muslim indigeneity and El Dorado, to the 1990 Jamaat al-Muslimeen attempted government coup in Trinidad and its calypso music, to judicial cases of contemporary interaction between Caribbean Muslims and global terrorism. Khan argues that the Caribbean Muslim subject, the "fullaman," a performative identity that relies on gendering and racializing Islam, troubles discourses of creolization that are fundamental to postcolonial nationalisms in the Caribbean.

The wind spent its strength in the north, and here one could listen to the creak of the chair as the Old nurse rocked slowly back and forth. Near her, on the bed, upon her back, was a young girl. Her curling brown hair lay a braid on either side of her delicate face. Her eyes were closed, but not in sleep, for every now and then she would move her right arm as though to draw something toward her. At length, Opening her eyes, and looking to the far corner of the room, she said: Mammy, I want it. The Old colored woman left her seat and walked to where a cradle stood. Not right now, lil' lamb. The small crowd of people who had been waiting in disgusted patience moved forward with a sigh of relief, questing among the disembarking passengers, each for his own. Whittemore, emerging leisurely from the smoker and avoiding a hurrying baggage truck still leisurely, saw no one he knew. He dismissed the porter who followed him with suitcase and greatcoat, dropped both by a lamp pillar, and lit a cigarette to consider. He had expected to be met, and decided to wait for five minutes grace before going on his unattended way.
