Book The Century of Columbus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Century of Columbus Classic Reprint written by James Joseph Walsh and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century of Columbus In a previous book, The Thirteenth Greatest of Centuries, I described the period of human activity in which, as it appears to me, more was accomplished that is of significance in the expression of what is best in man and for the development of humanity than during any corresponding period of the world's history. To many people it may now seem that I am setting up a rival to the Thirteenth Century in what is here called The Century of Columbus, the period from 1450 to 1550. I may as a foreword say, then, that there is no thought of that and that I still feel quite sure that the Thirteenth is the Great est of Centuries, though it must be admitted that probably more supremely great men were at work in Columbus' Cen tury than in the preceding period. The Thirteenth Century is greatest, however, because its achievements were more widely diffused in their in uence and because more of man kind had the opportunity and the incentive to bring out the highest that was in them, than at any other period in the world's history. As a consequence a greater proportion of mankind was happy than ever before or since, for happiness comes only with the consciousness of good work done and the satisfaction of personal achievement. And that is the greatest period of human history when man is the happiest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Educational Work of the Knights of Columbus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Educational Work of the Knights of Columbus Classic Reprint written by Mark Joseph Sweany and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Work of the Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus is primarily and essentially a fraternal society, but the order has never permitted itself to be circumscribed Within the narrow limits of insurance benefits and selfish social interests. It has from its very inception fostered and exercised that broader spirit of fraternity Which signalizes the history of the Knights of Columbus as a record of service ttod, to country, and to our fellow man. A new page of that history is being written. The story of the educational Work in Which the order has been engaged during the past four years is an interesting record of achievement. In the following report of the results that have been accomplished We do not profess to set forth completely their value to the order, to the N ation, and to the students Who have participated in the educational opportunities that We have offered. These results can not now be appraised in all their fullness, for, though they are in some degree immediate and tangible, in a larger sense they are of the future, and time alone can be their measure and their test. The preamble of the Capitulation consisted of an extensive religious discussion with which most of the state documents of this royal pair opened, but the several clauses of the contract dealing directly with the expedition consisted of a straightforward bargain between an adventurer and a pair of acquisitive princes who had territory and in creased revenues in mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and What He Found The immortal deed of Columbus will never lose its hold upon the heart of humanity, Whatever the criticisms upon it. It will always be told, not only for what was found, but because simple heroism - the same element which has immortalized Greek heroic tales - will always move us, head and heart. It is strange that, great and simple as Columbus was, we have made so little use of his story for the children, compared with that of other historic characters. But it was no fair maiden who so eu chained his attention. His features, larger and of a sterner mould than his brother's, were contracted in a frown of intense thought. The slight young girl with her companion, a stout, plainly dressed lady of middle age, passed directly in front of the two brothers, the girl with eyes demurely low ered. Book The Discovery and Conquest of the New World Containing the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery and Conquest of the New World: Containing the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus Entering upon what would naturally be supposed a most arduous undertaking, the preparation of this Introduction, I became aware of the fact that the magnitude of the subjects, the exalted, unquestioned posi tion of Washington Irving, which had seemed to present insurmountable difficulties, actually facilitated the accomplishment of the object of my efforts. A very pigmy may introduce a giant - the faintest streak of light in the east is sufficient to herald the coming of the orb of day. The untutored wandering Arab of the Desert, the unlettered mariner of the deep, can with unfailing accuracy point out the grand constellations of the heavens. The existence of vast superiority in any of the creations of God, obviates the necessity of introduction; the natural appreciation in mankind of that towering above or surpassing all surrounding objects of like kind makes introduction supererogatory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Columbus and His Times In early times, the efforts of navigators were very inconsiderable; their voyages consisted chiefly in a timid creeping along the coast, and rarely did they venture beyond sight of land. The light of the sun by day, and of the stars by night, was their only guide; and its absence, as in the voyage of the apostle Paul from Cesarea to Rome, was productive of great perplexity and alarm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of Christopher Columbus for Little Children He remembered in his readings of the book of Marco Polo's travels that the people whom he had met were heathen who knew little about the dear God who had made the world, and nothing at all about His son, Christ Jesus, and as Christopher Columbus loved very dearly the Christian religion, his mind became filled with a longing to carry it across the great seas to this far-away coun try. The more he thought about it the more he wanted to go, until his whole life was filled with the one thought of how to get hold of some ships to prove that the earth was round, and that these far-away heathens could be reached.
