Book In situ TEM Study of Dislocation Interface Interactions

Download or read book In situ TEM Study of Dislocation Interface Interactions written by Nan Li and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter, we highlighted the in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation of the interactions of dislocations with three types of interfaces: (i) twin boundaries in Cu; (ii) metallic interphase boundaries; and (iii) metal/ceramic interfaces. Interface structures, interface properties, and dislocation-interface interactions are characterized in a high-resolution TEM. These knowledge provided insights into the understanding of the physical properties of materials, developing materials modeling tools incorporating interface deformation physics, and designing materials with desired properties.

Book Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions

Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions written by G. Kostorz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III covers the papers presented at a European Research Conference on Plasticity of Materials-Fundamental Aspects of Dislocation Interactions: Low-Energy Dislocation Structures III, held on August 30-September 4, 1992 in Ascona, Switzerland. The book focuses on the processes, technologies, reactions, transformations, and approaches involved in dislocation interactions. The selection first offers information on work softening and Hall-Petch hardening in extruded mechanically alloyed alloys and dynamic origin of dislocation structures in deformed solids. Discussions focus on stress-strain behavior in relation to composition, structure, and annealing; comparison of stress-strain curves with work softening theory; sweeping and trapping mechanism; and model of dipolar wall structure formation. The text then ponders on plastic instabilities and their relation to fracture and dislocation and kink dynamics in f.c.c. metals studied by mechanical spectroscopy. The book takes a look at misfit dislocation generation mechanisms in heterostructures and evolution of dislocation structure on the interfaces associated with diffusionless phase transitions. Discussions focus on dislocation representation of a wall of elastic domains; equation of equilibrium of an elastic domain; transformation of dislocations; and theoretical and experimental background. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in dislocation interactions.

Book In Situ TEM Study of Interface Sliding and Migration in an Ultrafine Lamellar Structure

Download or read book In Situ TEM Study of Interface Sliding and Migration in an Ultrafine Lamellar Structure written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instability of interfaces in an ultrafine TiAl-([gamma])/Ti3Al-([alpha]2) lamellar structure by straining at room temperature has been investigated using in-situ straining techniques performed in a transmission electron microscope. The purpose of this study is to obtain experimental evidence to support the creep mechanisms based upon the interface sliding in association with a cooperative movement of interfacial dislocations previously proposed to interpret the nearly linear creep behavior observed from ultrafine lamellar TiAl alloys. The results have revealed that both the sliding and migration of lamellar interfaces can take place simultaneously as a result of the cooperative movement of interfacial dislocations.

Book Study of Dislocations in Copper by Weak Beam Stereo and in Situ Straining TEM

Download or read book Study of Dislocations in Copper by Weak Beam Stereo and in Situ Straining TEM written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has been an invaluable tool for verifjhg and developing dislocation theories since the first direct observations of dislocations were made using a TEM in the 1950s. Several useful techniques and technological advancements have been made since, helping fbrther the advancement of dislocation knowledge. The present paper concerns two studies of dislocations in copper made by coupling several of these techniques, specifically weak beam, in situ straining, and stereo TEM. Stereo-TEM coupled with in situ straining TEM was used for tracking 3D dislocation motion and interactions in low dislocation density copper foils. A mechanism by which dislocations in a pileup bypass a dislocation node is observed and discussed. Weak beam TEM is used in conjunction with stereo-TEM to analyze the dislocation content of a dense dislocation wall (DDW).

Book Time resolved and Three dimensional Study of Dislocation particle Interactions in Aluminum and Copper Alloys

Download or read book Time resolved and Three dimensional Study of Dislocation particle Interactions in Aluminum and Copper Alloys written by Grace Liu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dislocation-particle interactions in three alloys systems, Al-Cu, Al-Mg-Sc, and Cu-Co have been investigated using in situ straining experiments inside the transmission electron microscope, post mortem analysis, and electron tomographic reconstructions. Specifically, diffraction-contrast electron tomography was developed during the course of this work as a 3D imaging technique for crystalline systems such that the dislocation and defect arrangement could be fully characterized and spatially-resolved. Micrographs imaged using two-beam and kinematical bright-field and weak-beam dark-field conditions were acquired over an angular range then used to reconstruct the tomograms. Supplemental advances to the technique include: Visualization of dislocations in color based on Burgers vector or other relevant characteristics; determination of the specimen coordinate system in the tomogram; and overcoming the g 8́9 b invisibility condition by dual-axes tomography. In the Al-Cu system, which contained Al2Cu plate-shaped particles residing on {001}Al habit planes, in situ straining experiments revealed glide of lattice dislocations in the coherent side of the particle-matrix interface. The confined dislocations escaped the interface by cross-slip after reaching one end of the Al2Cu plate or by shearing the particle, as observed during post mortem analysis. Dislocations bypassed the particles by shear at multiple locations along their length, suggesting that a shearing site becomes more unfavorable with each dislocation passage such that adjacent slip systems must be activated in order to continue shear. When highly deformed, the inter-particle region was shown by electron tomography to be populated with a complex configuration of lattice dislocations pinned at both ends on a particle interface as well as debris created from dislocation-dislocation interactions. In the Cu-Co system, semicoherent Co-rich octahedral particles normally unshearble by lattice dislocations were observed to be sheared by small twins emanating from the Cu matrix. This new deformation behavior was attributed to the high strain rates associated with twinning and a small increase in interfacial energy associated with shearing of Co particles, which has the same stacking as the Cu matrix. Interactions with lattice dislocations, on the other hand, exhibited similar behavior during in situ and post mortem observations as the Al-Mg-Sc system, which contained Al3Sc particles. In the semi-coherent regime, between 40 nm and up to around 200 nm for Al3Sc and 100 nm for Co, an initial elastic interaction from the misfit strain field gave way to a novel bypass mechanism involving the creation of half-loops attached on one side to the particle interface via bowing and cross-slip while locally pinned at on the particle interface. Bypass of such a particle also involved interfacial dislocations, which increased the complexity of the particle-matrix interface and impeded subsequent bypass of the same particle. In all cases, multiple interactions with lattice dislocations resulted in the evolution of defect structures around a particle over time and the interactions examined were more complex than single dislocation-single particle interactions depicted in classical theoretical models.

Book Introduction to Dislocations

Download or read book Introduction to Dislocations written by Derek Hull and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Dislocations was first published in 1965 in a series aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students in metallurgy and materials science and related disciplines. At the time, the subject was maturing and it was expected that 'dislocation concepts' would remain a core discipline for a very long time. As expected, the book has been, and remains, an important undergraduate text all over the world. A wider range of materials has emerged since 1965, most notably in the field of electronics and micro-engineering. The principles of dislocation theory still apply but some of the detail requires further treatment. This fourth edition provides an essential basis for an understanding of many of the physical and mechanical properties of crystalline solids. This new edition has been extensively revised and updated to reflect developments in the understanding of the subject, whilst retaining the clarity and comprehensibility of the previous editions.

Book excerpt: Heterostructured (HS) materials represent an emerging class of materials that are expected to become a major research field for the communities of materials, mechanics, and physics in the next couple of decades. One of the biggest advantages of HS materials is that they can be produced by large-scale industrial facilities and technologies and therefore can be commercialized without the scaling up and high-cost barriers that are often encountered by other advanced materials. This book collects recent papers on the progress in the field of HS materials, especially their fundamental physics. The papers are arranged in a sequence of chapters that will help new researchers entering the field to have a quick and comprehensive understanding of HS materials, including the fundamentals and recent progress in their processing, characterization, and properties.

Book Radiation Damage in Materials

Download or read book Radiation Damage in Materials written by Yongqiang Wang and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexity of radiation damage effects in materials that are used in various irradiation environments stems from the fundamental particle–solid interactions and the subsequent damage recovery dynamics after the collision cascades, which involves multiple length and time scales. Adding to this complexity are the transmuted impurities that are unavoidable from accompanying nuclear processes. Helium is one such impurity that plays an important and unique role in controlling the microstructure and properties of materials used in fast fission reactors, plasma-facing and structural materials in fusion devices, spallation neutron target designs, actinides, tritium-containing materials, and nuclear waste. Their ultra-low solubility in virtually all solids forces He atoms to self-precipitate into small bubbles that become nucleation sites for further void growth under radiation-induced vacancy supersaturations, resulting in material swelling and high-temperature He embrittlement, as well as surface blistering under low-energy and high-flux He bombardment. This Special Issue, “Radiation Damage in Materials—Helium Effects”, contains review articles and full-length papers on new irradiation material research activities and novel material ideas using experimental and/or modeling approaches. These studies elucidate the interactions of helium with various extreme environments and tailored nanostructures, as well as their impact on microstructural evolution and material properties.
