Book excerpt: Ajani Buhari is an impoverished seven-year-old adoptee anchored in his own troubles when he is thrown right into the middle of a vindictive plot to teach an arrogant, pompous, xenophobic billionaire a lesson. Unfortunately, this lesson will come by way of his own emotionally scarred, big-hearted, and cocaine-addicted daughter. Unbeknown to them all, Ajani possesses a phenomenon never discovered in any human being that has ever walked on the earth. Ajani's abnormality is haphazardly discovered by school nurse Sharon Adams, who was subsequently given a death sentence because of the onslaught of an extremely aggressive and malignant form of cancer. After Sharon aids Ajani with an injury after a classroom donnybrook, her life is turned upside down when she goes in for her scheduled chemo therapy session but the oncologist can find no trace of the cancer. No oncologist in the world can make any professional sense of her remarkable and completely unheard of recovery sparking a federal investigation the like no other. The United States government will stop at nothing to find, contain, and control what they don't quite yet understand but threatens the world's pharmaceutical industry ultimately altering humanity forever.

Book Studies on Perfect Hyperbranched Chains Free in Solution and Confined in a Cylindrical Pore

Download or read book Studies on Perfect Hyperbranched Chains Free in Solution and Confined in a Cylindrical Pore written by Lianwei Li and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lianwei Li's Ph.D. thesis solves a long-standing problem in polymer physics: how does a hyperbranched chain pass through a cylindrical pore smaller than its size under an elongational flow field? The question was asked by the Nobel Laureate, the late Professor de Gennes in the 70s but has never been seriously addressed through real experiments. This thesis outlines how Lianwei Li developed a novel polymerization strategy using a seesaw-type macromonomer to prepare a set of "defect-free" hyperbranched chagins with different overall molar masses and controllable uniform subchain lengths. The author then unearthed how the critical (minimum) flow rate at which a hyperbranched chain can pass through the pore, is dependent on the overall molar mass and the subchain length. The experimental results give a unified description of polymer chains with different topologies passing through a small cylindrical pore, which enables us to separate chains by their topologies instead of their sizes in ultrafiltration. In addition, this research also reveals how the chain structure of amphiphilic hyperbranched block and graft copolymers affect their solution properties, including the establishments of several classic scaling laws that relate the chain size and the intrinsic viscosity to the overall molar mass and the subchain length, respectively. This work has led to numerous publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Book Virtual Drug Design

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniela Schuster
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA
  • Release : 2020-01-13
  • ISBN : 2889633594
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Virtual Drug Design written by Daniela Schuster and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current drug research environment in academia and industry, cheminformatics and virtual screening methods are well established and integrated tools. Computational tools are used to predict a compound’s 3D structure, the 3D structure and function of a pharmacological target, ligand-target interactions, binding energies, and other factors essential for a successful drug. This includes molecular properties such as solubility, logP value, susceptibility to metabolism, cell permeation, blood brain barrier permeation, interaction with drug transporters and potential off-target effects. Given that approximately 40 million unique compounds are readily available for purchase, such computational modeling and filtering tools are essential to support the drug discovery and development process. The aim of all these calculations is to focus experimental efforts on the most promising candidates and exclude problematic compounds early in the project. In this Research Topic on virtual activity predictions, we cover several aspects of this research area such as historical perspectives, data sources, ligand treatment, virtual screening methods, hit list handling and filtering.

Each book is broken into chapters with a detailed introduction and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter: 1. Pushing the Boundaries - A Conversation with former mathematical physicist and writer Freeman Dyson, who was one of the most celebrated polymaths of our age. Freeman Dyson had his academic home for more than 60 years at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has reshaped thinking in fields from math to astrophysics to medicine, while pondering nuclear-propelled spaceships designed to transport human colonists to distant planets. During this wide-ranging conversation Freeman looks back on his simultaneously transformative careers in theoretical physics, mathematics, biology, rocket ship design, nuclear disarmament and writing. 2. Harnessing the Sun - A Conversation with Jenny Nelson, Professor of Physics and Head of the Climate Change mitigation team at the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London. After inspiring insights about Jenny Nelson’s academic journey, the conversation examines different solar energy processes, solar energy conversion technology, novel varieties of material for use in solar cells, and the materials used to build and improve photovoltaic, and other renewable technologies, which convert energy from the sun into electricity. 3. The Pull of the Stars - A Conversation with Claudia de Rham, Professor of Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London. After inspiring insights about Claudia de Rham’s upbringing in Madagascar and her academic journey, this in-depth conversation explores her research in cosmology, the public perception and communication of science to the general public, gender issues and stereotypes in physics, and recommendations for physics teachers to inspire the next generation. 4. Examining Time - A Conversation with Lee Smolin, faculty member of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. The basis of this thought-provoking conversation are Lee Smolin’s books Life of the Cosmos and Time Reborn. This detailed discussion offers an investigation of time, both what it is and how the true nature of it impacts our world and future and provides behind-the scenes insights into the development of Lee Smolin’s groundbreaking theory on the nature of time. 5. SETI: Astronomy - A Conversation with Jill Tarter, Chair Emeritus for SETI Research at SETI Institute and Former Director of the Center for SETI Research. Astronomer Jill Tarter has spent the majority of her professional life driving forward the science and technology of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, rigorously scanning the sky for the signs of some signal sent to us from outer space. This wide-ranging conversation explores the history of the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence, what the present state is of our quest for signals from other planets, what those signals might look like and how we can interpret them, how SETI research has a surprisingly positive effect on other technologies, how citizens can get involved with astronomy and much more. Howard Burton is the founder and host of all Ideas Roadshow Conversations and was the Founding Executive Director of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics and an MA in philosophy.
