Book excerpt: Laura Brookline, a city-streetwise detective, and her twin sister, Sara, a compassionate US Army nurse, got more than they bargained for when they won an all-expenses-paid summer vacation. Even before arriving in the seemingly peaceful resort town of Rogers Cove, New Jersey, they evade an attempted kidnapping and discover they're atop an unknown enemy's dark web hit list. In Rogers Cove, as threats mount, they team up with a local cop, Greg Waller, and his pal, Stewy Bishop--both veterans with visible and invisible war wounds. As attempts on their lives continue, new allies--including federal agents and agencies, another target of the assassins, a college professor, a retired physician, and some town locals--join the battle against a series of killers eager to collect the bounty on the twins. While countering the most professional and sadistic assassin, Monique Dumas, who in many guises, relentlessly stalks the twins, Stewy and Greg wrestle with the scars of war, Laura must confront her shattered faith in God, and Sara finds unexpected sacrificial love in a cauldron of lethal events. Each sister ultimately learns that their danger is in her eyes--one blue and one brown--making them the prime targets of shadowy, satanic, and powerful forces paying top dollar for their demise.

  • Author : Dr. Rowan Blogg
  • Publisher : BalboaPress

Download or read book Any Kind of Danger written by Dr. Rowan Blogg and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Know the animals, respect the planet, love thy neighbor. Rowan Blogg is an Australian veterinarian of the highest distinction and I greatly admire his professionalism, which I observed for years at close range. In Any Kind of Danger he has extended his work into the environment and moral philosophy by tackling the complex issue of how we exploit animals. In the 19th Century William Wilberforce and other pioneers argued that our treatment of animals is a measure of our humanity. Peter Singers Animal Liberation (1975) stimulated international interest in the subject. Dr Bloggs book should do the same. Rowan Blogg examines the role of wildlife on the planet, millions of years before our species became dominant, but how much habitat do we reserve for their natural life? How many species are under threat? The worlds population will stabilise at about nine billion in 2050 and this raises the fundamental issues of how much land, water and energy we will devote to raising animals for food. Is grazing an efficient or humane way of feeding our species? Industrial farming out of sight and out of mind involves inescapable cruelty. Chickens are raised on an A4 size of smaller scratching area, confined in multi-layered cages. Do animals have a right of access to sunlight and paddock for at least the great part of their lives? How does a cow giving birth cope with a crowded cattle truck? Do we turn our eyes away from the inevitable suffering involved in animal transport, especially life sheep exports? There are profound moral lessons to be learned from observing how we treat animals and yet the issue will not be on the agenda for the next Federal or State elections. We are in Dr Bloggs debt for this thoughtful, passionate book. -Barry Jones, AO, FAA, FAHA. FTSE, FASSA Australian Minister for Science 1983-90

Book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Download or read book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

It is also a portrait of America in the troubled 1960s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many ways, my life is complete, or as complete as it can be with aliens roaming Earth, killing and enslaving humans. Jason, my love, is by my side, and my friendship with Wade is back on track. Even better, it seems the threats of annihilation from the aliens have turned out to be nothing but hot air. Yet, despite the peace of our Arrowwood refuge, there is still a war waging outside, something I’ve tried not to think too much about. Just as I’ve ignored the fact that a sanctuary can also be a prison, or a tomb, we are forced to step out of safety and live or die, in danger’s embrace.

Book The Most Dangerous Cinema

Download or read book The Most Dangerous Cinema written by Bryan Senn and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People hunting people for sport--an idea both shocking and fascinating. In 1924 Richard Connell published a short story that introduced this concept to the world, where it has remained ever since--as evidenced by the many big- and small-screen adaptations and inspirations. Since its publication, Connell's award-winning "The Most Dangerous Game" has been continuously anthologized and studied in classrooms throughout America. Raising questions about the nature of violence and cruelty, and the ethics of hunting for sport, the thrilling story spawned a new cinematic subgenre, beginning with RKO's 1932 production of The Most Dangerous Game, and continuing right up to today. This book examines in-depth all the cinematic adaptations of the iconic short story. Each film chapter has a synopsis, a "How Dangerous Is It?" critique, an overall analysis, a production history, and credits. Five additional chapters address direct to video, television, game shows, and almost "dangerous" productions. Photographs, extensive notes, bibliography and index are included.
