Hot-tempered belle Laurette Allen gets more than she bargained for when she leaves the stifling confines of polite, southern society for the wilds of 1830s California. At her very first fiesta, she is nearly seduced by notorious Cade Caldwell, a fellow Louisianan whose reputation for swordplay is only exceeded by his skill with women. But soon Laurie's attention is consumed by threats to the local villagers, who are suffering under cruel tax collectors. If only there were an avenger brave enough to sweep in with blade in hand . . . a brave soul trained at riding and dueling, just as she is . . . Cade's desire for beautiful Laurie Allen is tainted by his memories of betrayal by another southern belle; he learned a hard lesson about trusting Laurie's type. He wants to possess Laurie, to own her body and soul but not to love her. What is the hint of danger around her? Cade suspects his competition for her affections might just be El Vengador--The Avenger--the masked rider who's been stealing from the corrupt tax collectors. But is The Avenger her partner in crime, or does Laurie need his protection? Virginia Brown is the author of more than 50 novels in romance, mystery and general fiction. She's the author of the bestselling Dixie Divas mystery series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Formerly titled FIREBLOSSOM* Daniel "Fox" Matthews, sent to Little Bighorn by the president to keep an eye on hot-headed General Custer, is haunted by guilt for a battle outcome he couldn't prevent. The raucous gold town of Deadwood, South Dakota seems like the perfect refuge, although it's located in the Black Hills, sacred land to the same Sioux Indians who decimated Custer's troops. Madeleine Avery, raised to be a lady in Philadelphia, is appalled when she arrives in Deadwood with her family. Slowly she unbends, coaxed out of her shell by a powerful attraction to Fox and a journey into the world of the Sioux Indians. IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE is a compelling tale of cultures colliding and the bittersweet, tender journey of Fox and Maddie as they discover the secrets of their own hearts. REVIEWS: "By including historical figures like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok, Custer and Crazy Horse, Cynthia Wright adds depth and color to an absolutely wonderful novel!" ~ ROMANTIC TIMES "Wright weaves history and fiction together skillfully. Maddie is a proper lady who must learn to unbend. Fox is the presidential adviser who's undercover and trying to live with a decision that left him alive while Custer's men died. Like 'Dances With Wolves,' IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE paints the Sioux as an idyllic people faced with the end of life as they know it. Wright creates sympathetic Indian characters and populates Deadwood with an array of real-life eccentrics. IN A RENEGADE'S EMBRACE again shows why Wright is one of the country's most popular romance novelists." ~ THE SIOUX FALLS ARGUS LEADER Author's note: Maddie's grandmother, Susan Hampshire O'Hara, is the daughter of Lion & Meagan from TOUCH THE SUN. She also appears in HER DANGEROUS VISCOUNT as a young woman.

Book Perceptions of a Renegade Mind

Book excerpt: David Icke has been writing books for decades warning that current events were coming. He has faced ridicule and abuse for saying that the end of human freedom was being planned, how, and by whom. His latest highly topical book, Perceptions of a Renegade Mind, is published in very different circumstances with vast numbers of people acknowledging that he has been vindicated by the happenings of the 'Covid' era. His predictions over more than 30 years have been proved stunningly accurate since the turn of 2020 often down to the fine detail. Icke set out only in January 2021, to write a book to quickly bring enormous numbers of people worldwide up to speed and who can now see that something very strange is happening. But they ask, what exactly? What is going on? He answers those questions in his usual dot-connected detail and lays out the background to what he calls the 'Global Cult' which operates across borders to advance a long-planned agenda for total human control. Those who read his section on 'Covid' will view events of 2020 and 2021 in a totally new light as he produces the evidence that humanity has been misled on a scale that defies belief. David Icke's time has come, and Perceptions of a Renegade Mind is destined to be an international best seller that could not have been published at a more important and relevant time or with such a now receptive audience to what he has to say.

  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Renegades written by Robert Harkins and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wee hours of December 16, 1773, Boston, Massachusetts, citizens, in a feat of magnificent defiance, joined together in a tea party that would breathe into being the American Revolution, a conservative constitution, a sovereign people, and the United States. Today, more than two hundred years later, it's time for a new revolution. In Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response, author Robert Harkins outlines the reasons for a new revolution. It's not the British we must defy but the intellectual elite, whom Harkins calls the renegade liberal—as did George Orwell in his unpublished preface to Animal Farm. The intellectual elite seek to dismantle American civilization and diminish people they believe are so intellectually vacuous and religiously provincial they must, in all things great and small, be carefully monitored and told precisely what and how to think, believe, and live. This cannot be. Americans must discover again their ancient roots, their mythos, creed, and identity. They must commit themselves again to moral and rational excellence. Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response is a tribute to American virtue and serves a starting point for Americans to return to excellence. 'Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response is a historic treasure. Robert Harkins's understanding of history, culture, and America is unsurpassed; and these pages will reveal why past civilizations have gone extinct. More importantly, Harkins's words are a roadmap for each of us to preserve liberty and freedom for our children and grandchildren right here in America, man's last best hope on earth.' Jeff Crank, radio talk show host and Colorado Director of Americans for Prosperity Robert Harkins received his law degree from St. Mary's University in Texas, where he received honors for exceptional scholastic excellence in the disciplines of federal and constitutional law. He taught business and constitutional law as a guest teacher at the University of Texas and served as a Texas judge for seven years, during which time he graduated from the Texas and National Colleges of the Judiciary. He now lives with his wife, Hyosuk, in Colorado.

Book Embracing Protestantism

  • Author : John W. Catron
  • Publisher : University Press of Florida
  • Release : 2016-03-09

  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Embracing Protestantism written by John W. Catron and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Embracing Protestantism, John Catron argues that people of African descent in America who adopted Protestant Christianity during the eighteenth century did not become African Americans but instead assumed more fluid Atlantic-African identities. America was then the land of slavery and white supremacy, where citizenship and economic mobility were off-limits to most people of color. In contrast, the Atlantic World offered access to the growing abolitionist movement in Europe. Catron examines how the wider Atlantic World allowed membership in transatlantic evangelical churches that gave people of color unprecedented power in their local congregations and contact with black Christians in West and Central Africa. It also channeled inspiration from the large black churches then developing in the Caribbean and from black missionaries. Unlike deracinated creoles who attempted to merge with white culture, people of color who became Protestants were "Atlantic Africans," who used multiple religious traditions to restore cultural and ethnic connections. And this religious heterogeneity was a critically important way black Anglophone Christians resisted slavery.

Book The Dark Fantastic

Download or read book The Dark Fantastic written by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the diversity crisis in children's and young adult media as not only a lack of representation, but a lack of imagination Stories provide portals into other worlds, both real and imagined. The promise of escape draws people from all backgrounds to speculative fiction, but when people of color seek passageways into the fantastic, the doors are often barred. This problem lies not only with children’s publishing, but also with the television and film executives tasked with adapting these stories into a visual world. When characters of color do appear, they are often marginalized or subjected to violence, reinforcing for audiences that not all lives matter. The Dark Fantastic is an engaging and provocative exploration of race in popular youth and young adult speculative fiction. Grounded in her experiences as YA novelist, fanfiction writer, and scholar of education, Thomas considers four black girl protagonists from some of the most popular stories of the early 21st century: Bonnie Bennett from the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, Rue from Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games, Gwen from the BBC’s Merlin, and Angelina Johnson from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Analyzing their narratives and audience reactions to them reveals how these characters mirror the violence against black and brown people in our own world. In response, Thomas uncovers and builds upon a tradition of fantasy and radical imagination in Black feminism and Afrofuturism to reveal new possibilities. Through fanfiction and other modes of counter-storytelling, young people of color have reinvisioned fantastic worlds that reflect their own experiences, their own lives. As Thomas powerfully asserts, “we dark girls deserve more, because we are more.”

Book Venetians in Constantinople

Download or read book Venetians in Constantinople written by Eric Dursteler and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Eric R Dursteler reconsiders identity in the early modern world to illuminate Veneto-Ottoman cultural interaction and coexistence, challenging the model of hostile relations and suggesting instead a more complex understanding of the intersection of cultures. Although dissonance and strife were certainly part of this relationship, he argues, coexistence and cooperation were more common. Moving beyond the "clash of civilizations" model that surveys the relationship between Islam and Christianity from a geopolitical perch, Dursteler analyzes the lived reality by focusing on a localized microcosm: the Venetian merchant and diplomatic community in Muslim Constantinople. While factors such as religion, culture, and political status could be integral elements in constructions of self and community, Dursteler finds early modern identity to be more than the sum total of its constitutent parts and reveals how the fluidity and malleability of identity in this time and place made coexistence among disparate cultures possible.
