Book Impulse Noise Measurement Techniques and Hearing Protector Performance Report on Scientific Exchange at the French German Research Institute of Saint Louis

Download or read book Impulse Noise Measurement Techniques and Hearing Protector Performance Report on Scientific Exchange at the French German Research Institute of Saint Louis written by Ann Nakashima and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of impulse noise and the performance of several hearing protection devices were done in Saint-Louis and Baldersheim, France at the French-German Research Institute of Saint- Louis (ISL) in August 2006. Hearing protector performance was evaluated using an acoustic test fixture that was designed by ISL. Impulse noises of peak levels from 110 to 190 dB were produced by detonation of explosives. The noise attenuation achieved by a Peltor communications headset (MT15H68 FB 950) and a Peltor Optime III earmuff was measured alone and in combination with a Bilsom nonlinear earplug (Model 655). The Peltor Optime III provided slightly more attenuation than the communications headset up to about 2 kHz. When used in the combination with the earplug, similar attenuation was achieved for the two devices. A prototype AEARO earplug was also tested in the blast noise, and was found to provide good attenuation at low frequencies when used in the nonlinear mode. The performance of the Nacre QuietPro active earplug system was measured in pink noise of 85, 90 and 95 dB. The device provided good attenuation in the passive mode and adequate protection in the push-to-talk (PTT) modes. It is expected that the work performed will lead to future collaborations between DRDC Toronto and ISL in the area of protection from impulse noise and blasts.

Book Actual Effectiveness of Hearing Protection in High Level Impulse Noise

Download or read book Actual Effectiveness of Hearing Protection in High Level Impulse Noise written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current exposure limits for high intensity impulse noise contain factors for hearing protection which are based on very limited data. Recent studies in the U.S. and in France have provided new insights into the protection afforded by hearing protective devices. For impulses with an A-duration of approximately 3.0 ms, protection was found to be adequate for peak pressures up to 190 dB SPL for 6 impulses and 187 dB for 100 impulses. Protection was found to be adequate for 6 impulses with an A-duration of approximately 0.8 ms up to 196 dB SPL. For this A-duration, protection was adequate for 12 impulses up to 190 dB SPL and for 50 and 100 impulses at 187 dB SPL. The hearing protectors used in these studies were earmuffs with perforations in the cushions which provided essentially attenuation below 500 Hz. In a series of French studies, hearing protection was found be adequate for impulses produced by a variety of weapons with peak pressures ranging from 165 dB SPL to 180 dB SPL. These included small arms with A-durations less than 1.0 artillery with A-durations of approximately 3.0 ms and other weapons with durations between these extremes. A variety of insert hearing protectors (earplugs) was used in these studies. (AN).

Book Damage Risk from Impulse Noise

Download or read book Damage Risk from Impulse Noise written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication comprises papers from an RTO Lecture Series on Damage Risk From Impulse Noise. High-level impulse noise (weapons noise) can cause auditory as well as non-auditory damage, which may limit combat effectiveness and may result in communication impairments as a consequence of noise-induced hearing loss. Recent research has shown that the present damage risk criteria have to be adjusted. This has major implications for the protective measures that have to be taken when using weapon systems. Protection equipment can be very effective when properly used, but everyday practice shows that the results in the field fall short of what could be achieved. In addition, hearing protection may interfere with communication. New developments in the design of hearing protectors: level dependent, active noise reduction show how the protection and communication requirements can be combined and satisfied. Educational programs, emphasizing the new developments, may help to improve the effectiveness of hearing conservation and reduce the number of non-auditory accidents. Topics covered by individual papers are: techniques and procedures for the measurement of impulse noise; a draft ANSI standard on auditory risk criteria; performance of hearing protectors; communication and localization with hearing protectors; individual susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss; new perspectives in the treatment of acute noise trauma; cost effectiveness of hearing conservation programmes; non-auditory damage risk assessment for impulse noise.

Download or read book A Review of Impulse noise Research at the Human Engineering Laboratories written by David C. Hodge and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of impulse-noise exposure as a severe Army problem is discussed. Efforts at alleviating these problems are reviewed under five subject categories: development of measurement techniques, conduct of temproary hearing loss investigations, noise suppression experiments, determination of the limits of hearing protection, and development of hearing damage-risk criteria. Book Frequency Dependence of Impulse Noise Attenuation

Download or read book Frequency Dependence of Impulse Noise Attenuation written by James H. Patterson (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts have been made to use a single auditory value of attenuation to assess the hazard to hearing from exposure to high intensity impulse noise and to establish maximum allowable impulse noise exposure levels. This procedure ignores the interaction of the attenuation characteristics of the hearing protector and the energy density spectrum of the impulse. This report demonstrated that errors as large as 17 dB can result from failing to account for this interaction. (Author).

Book Measurement of Impulse Noise

Download or read book Measurement of Impulse Noise written by Hans G. Jonasson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some problems with the current international standards for determination of emission sound pressure levels and sound power levels of impulse noise are dealt with. The concept of sound energy level is analysed theoretically and a series of measurements is reported. The results clearly indicate that sound energy levels can be determined using the same methods and having the same measurement uncertainty as have the sound power levels. There is no reason not to revise the relevant EN ISO standards to include the sound energy level. The measurement uncertainty of impulse noise is discussed and measurement results using both a real sound source and a loudspeaker emitting different sound pulses in different test environments are reported. The results indicate that C- weighted peak sound pressure levels of impulse sound can always be measured with good accuracy at short distances, about 0,5 m, from the sound source. The error in relation to hemi-anechoic measurements is not likely to exceed 2 dB. At larger distances larger errors may occur. However. it is possible to distinguish small errors from possible large errors by evaluating the indicator LpCpeak- LpCFn-ax The indicator shall be determined in the direct sound field of the source where reflections from the walls have little influence. A suitable measurement distance is 0,5 m. If this indicator is larger than 20 dB the measurement distance can be extended to about 3 m without exceeding an error of 2 dB in relation to hemi-anechoic measurements. The error in peak measurements will be smaller in the middle of a room than in a corner or close to walls.
