Book excerpt: Increasingly, school districts have utilized school-based mentoring to address the growing academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of adolescents in public schools. These programs primarily utilized licensed teachers to help facilitate school-based mentoring programs to reach a majority of the general student population. This study aimed to contribute to the literature by examining the perceptions of teachers on mentoring program effectiveness and general outlook by examining their beliefs, opinions, and suggestions for how to better shape school-based mentoring programs. This study revealed that most educators had a strong sense of mentoring program purpose and goals, which were congruent with mentoring best practices. Teachers who served as mentors also understood and complied with their outlined program expectations and responsibilities. While teachers had varied opinions on what the focus of their mentoring program should be (students social well-being or academics), all teachers agreed that mentoring as a general practice was overall beneficial for the general student population and overwhelmingly perceived the existence of their mentoring program as positive. However, teacher frustrations and criticisms of program applications persisted and should be a priority of focus for educational leaders when considering future schoolwide mentoring program implementation.

Book excerpt: Previous research suggests that school-based mentoring programs like those offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) yield small but statistically significant improvements in the academic performance of mentored students and in their beliefs in their own scholastic efficacy. The present study uses data from a randomized control trial involving over 1,000 students from 71 schools across the country to investigate further the academic benefits of school-based mentoring, and to enrich the field's understanding of how schools can use volunteers to support students. We employ instrumental variables and other approaches to provide insight into why the BBBSA school-based mentoring program is effective, finding that the relationship between mentor and protǧ ̌appears to play a key role. The evidence suggests that developing a close relationship with a mentor led to better academic outcomes for students; in contrast, students who were mentored but did not experience a close relationship showed no improvement in academic outcomes relative to the control group. This pattern holds for mentoring relationships of various durations. In addition, there is no evidence that mentoring programs with an academic focus produced better academic outcomes than relationship-only programs. Findings do reveal, however, that programs structured with weekly meetings and with opportunities for pairs to interact outside of a large-group setting were more likely to generate close mentor-protǧ ̌relationships. Beyond reporting new empirical findings, this paper contributes a theoretical structure with which to assess the results of randomized evaluations of mentoring programs.

Book excerpt: This study and research investigates if an activity-based mentoring practice can encourage, motivate and assist our youth to succeed educationally and socially within their school. It is well known that education is one, if not the most important elements that can improve for the sake of our youth in their daily activities. In order to create a better platform for our youth, we must assist the schools by using our existing educational and social community environments that can house a new plan for possible mentorships. Through a self-explored personal mentorship between myself and a student in Chicago Public School, together we will begin to analyze these questions; Can we assist our students with their education and social ability outside of the classroom with mentoring programs? Can we improve the practice of a mentorship by using a new structure and ideas of an activity-based teaching style? Can we overcome the issues in a classroom by evaluating the activity-based mentoring methods environment? For my research settings, the qualitative based style within the use of a narrative created a basic form from my experience. I navigated through this activity-based mentorship with a student that was progressing from eighth grade to the end of freshman year of high school, which involved activities and educational based art practices. Keeping the mentees mind on specific ideas and subject matter assisted him inside of the school efforts with homework, lessons, projects, collaboration and grades. Within these standard school practices outside of school, the mentorship not only studied with the mentee, but used a participating method. The combination of these research methodologies told our story, as well as gave us data that supported the issues towards a solution. The student, my mentee, began listing activities he enjoyed. We would operate these activities once a week for the last semester of eighth grade. Through his comfort-ability and current effort, we concentrated on what needed assistance. For educational purposes we conversed and worked on homework. For any other issues involving the social environment, we used an arts process of rollerblading together at the Chicago skateparks, as well as attended art events and museums. This process guided us through summer and continued into the first semester of high school. We then had a better general layout of the mentorship and were able to translate to the new style of teaching and environment. It also led us to positive conversations with his parents about what the mentorship was accomplishing, the status of his grades and attitude and what changes can be adjusted by the frame of time. This pattern also progressed throughout the end of freshman year. We finalized with an outside the classroom project proposal of an active rollerblading art gallery. We worked on this project when all assignments were complete. It was our concluding goal.

Youth mentoring is among the most popular forms of volunteering in the world. But does it work? Does mentoring actually help young people succeed? In Older and Wiser, mentoring expert Jean Rhodes draws on more than thirty years of empirical research to survey the state of the field. Her conclusion is sobering: there is little evidence that most programs—even renowned, trusted, and long-established ones—are effective. But there is also much reason for hope. Mentoring programs, Rhodes writes, do not focus on what young people need. Organizations typically prioritize building emotional bonds between mentors and mentees. But research makes clear that effective programs emphasize the development of specific social, emotional, and intellectual skills. Most mentoring programs are poorly suited to this effort because they rely overwhelmingly on volunteers, who rarely have the training necessary to teach these skills to young people.
