Book excerpt: Land degradation is a major environmental issue that affects rural livelihoods and the well-being of inhabitants by substantially impacting the sustainability of food production and other ecosystem services as well as rural infrastructures that are essential to the prosperity of these communities. Land degradation refers to the human-induced reduction or loss of the biological or economic productivity and complexity of land, which is most often attributed to poor land management practices and unsustainable land use. Land degradation consists of a multitude of processes including deforestation, soil erosion, and increased sedimentation, among others. These processes interact in concert to cause severe environmental impacts such as the reduction of biomass and biodiversity, nutrient depletion of soils, loss of organic matter in soil, reduction in soil structure and quality, and destruction of rural infrastructure such as roads or dams, to name a few. The effects of land degradation, both onsite and offsite, are widespread and linked. The onsite consequences include loss of productivity, reductions in resilience leading to higher variability in yields and vulnerability to extreme weather conditions, and a reduction in the capacity to adapt to climate change while the off-site consequences are global or regional, such as increased carbon emissions and poor water regulation, resulting in floods, sedimentation and reduced base flow downstream. After the introductory chapter, chapter two presents an overview of soil erosion, land degradation and SLWM practices in the LVB. Chapter three first introduces the case study area - the Simiyu catchment and its constituencies, and then the methodology used. Key findings and results regarding the effectiveness of the various SLWM practices are discussed in chapter four. Chapter five presents monitoring and evaluation frameworks and soil erosion indicators. Chapter six summarizes the recommendations resulting from the case study.

Book The Wealth of Lake Victoria Basin

Download or read book The Wealth of Lake Victoria Basin written by Furaha Ngeregere Lugoe and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The land resources in the LVB generate local, national and global benefits that are important for food security and rural livelihoods. However, this large agro-biodiversity is threatened by habitat modification and fragmentation, a reduction in vegetation cover and species diversity and over-exploitation and competition from invasive species, mainly as a consequent of human population growth. The LVB covers about 19400 Km2, shared amongst Tanzania (44%), Kenya (22%), Uganda (16%), Rwanda (11%), and Burundi (7%). It has about 35,000,000 people with a population density of about 300 per km2, which is higher than the national averages of Uganda (235), Burundi (210), Tanzania (190), Kenya (342), and Rwanda (378). The LVB has immense natural resources that include forests, savannah, rangelands, and fisheries which provide livelihood for communities around the basin. The demands to meet the needs of the rapidly increasing population and domestic animals in the form of space, shelter, space, food, water, health services, and waste disposal, puts very high pressure on the resources of the basin (LVBC, 2011). Since the 1970s, Lake Victoria's water quality has declined significantly, mainly due to increased sedimentation, water pollution and eutrophication, caused mainly by poor land use management within the Basin (LVB).

Book Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa

Download or read book Climate Change and Water Resources in Africa written by Salif Diop and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on the key water-related vulnerabilities to climate change in Africa, particularly in its most vulnerable areas, exploring potential management responses to such vulnerabilities. The African countries are particularly exposed and vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change, with important impacts on water resources and hydrological systems, water availability, water resource management and sea level variations. Already, under various anthropogenic pressures, the status of water resources in Africa has been changing over the past decades, with decreasing water quality, falling groundwater levels, and variability in rainfall, both in terms of timing and intensity. Climate change will further accelerate the rate of change, affecting the ability of people and societies to respond in a timely manner. It is clear that there is no quick fix to the pressures imposed on water resources by climate change. Increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to extreme events such as flooding and drought, and integrating climate change risks and opportunities into development decision-making is indeed a key challenge, as much a technical climate-change one, as a political and developmental challenge. The book, in this regard, intends to contribute to the debate around climate change in relation to water resources management in Africa, and in particular inform policy decisions and actions that will improve governments’ and communities’ ability to manage the challenges of climate change and variability in relation to the aquatic ecosystems that they depend on. The knowledge collected in this book will benefit policy makers, researchers, as well as other stakeholders.

Book Impacts of Changing Pastoral Strategies on Environmental Resources and Livelihoods in Tanzania s Lake Victoria Basin

Download or read book Impacts of Changing Pastoral Strategies on Environmental Resources and Livelihoods in Tanzania s Lake Victoria Basin written by Elliott Phillemons Niboye and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land tenure in pastoral and agro pastoral areas of Tanzania is under stress. The stress emanates mainly from changing natural and demographic environments. Other underlying causes are social, economic and political changes. In the past three to four decades, both pastoral and agro-pastoral areas have been experiencing rapid population increase, with a national mean population growth rate estimated at 3 per cent per annum (Kurian 1992). This has increased demand for cultivation lands, forcing pastoralists and agro-pastoralists to more marginal areas and triggering off in some cases environmental degradation process. These processes are paralleled by overall climatic changes with concomitant increasing droughts. The combined effect of these processes has culminated into a general decline of pastoral and agro-pastoral communityis welfare and increased livelihood insecurity. This study explored the impacts of these changes in agro-pastoral land use on the physical environment as well as livelihood and welfare of the community in Missungwi District.

Book The Food Energy Water Nexus

Download or read book The Food Energy Water Nexus written by Peter Saundry and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This will be the first textbook on the integration of food, energy and water systems (FEWS). In recent years, the world has seen a dramatic rise in interdisciplinary energy and environmental courses and degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In the US for instance, the number and variety of such programs has increased significantly over the past decade, Simultaneously, national and international initiatives that integrate food, energy and water systems have been launched. This textbook provides a substantive introduction to the food-energy-water nexus suitable for use in higher level undergraduate and graduate level courses and for scholars moving into the field of nexus studies without a strong background in all three areas and the many aspects of nexus studies.
