Book Importance of Socio Economic and Institutional Factors in the Use of Veterinary Services by the Smallholder Dairy Farmers in Punjab

Download or read book Importance of Socio Economic and Institutional Factors in the Use of Veterinary Services by the Smallholder Dairy Farmers in Punjab written by Shiv Raj Singh Rathore and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study has shown the importance of identifying factors that determined the likelihood of using veterinary services in Punjab. Secondary data were used for analysis with the sample size of 1137 dairy households. Estimates of factors influencing the use of veterinary services are reasonably consistent with the farmer decision to use it. The proportional relationship between veterinary services available within the village and use of veterinary services revealed that, distance of veterinary service availability positively influenced the farmer decision to use the veterinary services. There was a positive relationship between herd size and use of veterinary services. More educated farmers are in a better position to use the veterinary services. The principal source of income from agricultural activities was positively influenced by the likelihood to use veterinary services in study area. The model from empirical point of view is very important to predict whether household will be using the veterinary services or not after incorporating the value of the explanatory variables.

Book Veterinary Medicine and Pharmaceuticals

Download or read book Veterinary Medicine and Pharmaceuticals written by Samuel Oppong Bekoe and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-03-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veterinary pharmaceuticals provide animals with the requisite, complete animal health care. The availability of safe and good quality medicines in the right amounts is needed in achieving optimum animal health care. The economic benefits of animal food products cannot be under-estimated. Veterinary pharmaceuticals are needed to meet the ever-growing demand of animal protein for the human population. However, their routine and unguarded use play significant roles in many public health issues, such as antimicrobial resistance. The practices, knowledge, and awareness needed on the use and application of veterinary pharmaceuticals amongst farmers, animal health professionals, microbiologists, and policy makers remain key in ensuring a safe and healthy food chain for all. In the field of veterinary medicine, canine practice is a challenge to veterinarians. In recent years, newer diagnostic methods and therapeutic protocols have been published on a regular basis. Along with the existing knowledge of important canine diseases like ascites, duodenal disorders, pericardial effusions, and canine mastitis, this book is supplemented with all the latest information. Discussion of duodenal disorders in dogs, including IBD and SIBO, is an important topic in day-to-day practice. Ascites and mastitis in dogs are also important topics and are discussed in this book. Each topic carries practical points for the diagnosis and management of important diseases of dogs. Hence, this book will be very useful for canine practitioners.

Book Farmer friendly Delivery of Veterinary Services

Download or read book Farmer friendly Delivery of Veterinary Services written by Kevin W. Maina and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poor health conditions of livestock cause sizeable losses for many farmers in the Global South. Veterinary services, including vaccinations, could help but often fail to reach farmers under typical smallholder conditions. Here, we examine how the provision of a vaccine against East Cost Fever (ECF) - a tick-borne disease affecting cattle in Africa - can be designed to reduce typical adoption barriers. Using data from a choice experiment with dairy farmers in Kenya, we evaluate farmers' preferences and willingness to pay for various institutional innovations in vaccine delivery, such as a stronger role of dairy cooperatives, new payment modalities with a check-off system, vaccination at farmers' homestead, and bundling vaccinations with discounts for livestock insurance. Our data reveal that farmers' awareness of the ECF vaccine is limited and adoption rates are low, largely due to institutional constraints. Results from mixed logit and latent class models suggest that suitable institutional innovations - tailored to farmers' heterogeneous conditions - could significantly increase adoption. This general finding likely also holds for other veterinary technologies and services in the Global South.

Book Economic Analysis of Rural and Periurban Dairy Farms of Punjab

Download or read book Economic Analysis of Rural and Periurban Dairy Farms of Punjab written by Sumit Mahajan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy sector can play an important role in determining future prospects for the employment generation and poverty alleviation in the country. Since, earning reasonable profit has become a major yardstick for dairy farmers for taking decision about which type of dairy farm they should go with, this study would prove useful for policy makers. Keeping all these in view, the present study entitled "Economic Analysis of Rural and Periurban Dairy Farms in Ludhiana District of Punjab" has been undertaken with objectives to work out the cost of milk production and returns on rural and periurban dairy farms, to assess the labour employment on different dairy farms, to estimate the input-output relationship and resource-use efficiency in milk production, to study the breeding, feeding and health care management constraints faced and practices followed by the dairy farmers. To achieve the above objectives, 1 village and 1 periurban area each were randomly selected from 2 tehsils, which fell under Ludhiana district of Punjab with a sample of 40 (25 rural, 15 periurban) dairy farms selected randomly and data was collected for 3 seasons.

Book Opportunities for improving resource use efficeincy of peri urban dairy herds in Faisalabad Punjab Pakistan

Download or read book Opportunities for improving resource use efficeincy of peri urban dairy herds in Faisalabad Punjab Pakistan written by Muhammad Tariq and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide rapidly increasing urbanization is intensifying the demand for foods, particularly those of animal origin, in the urban centers. Peri-urban dairy production has already a longstanding tradition in Pakistan (chapter 1), but these dairy production systems have their unique characteristics, opportunities and constraints. Although in general they are economically profitable, the profitability varies tremendously between farms. Poor managerial practices, lack of knowledge about balanced feeding and feed scarcity management, poor hygiene in milk production and handling, and unsupervised use of veterinary medicines leading to drug residues in milk are recognized as major technical challenges for peri-urban dairy farmers in Pakistan. Therefore, efforts must be made to improve management practices of peri-urban dairy units in such a way that farm income is increased and product quality and safety is assured. Qualitative and semi-quantitative data obtained from 139 interviews with peri-urban dairy farmers in Faisalabad, Pakistan, was subjected to cluster analysis to identify homogenous groups of farms regarding animal management, milk yields and marketing strategies (chapter 2). Four distinct production systems were identified. Semi-commercial small scale mixed systems (SSM; 31%) combined crop and livestock production, and fodder was primarily produced for own livestock. Semi-commercial small scale dairy producers (SSD; 21.6%) had few buffaloes and cattle and low income. Commercial small scale dairy producers (CSD; 37.4%) were mostly well-off and produced substantial quantities of milk year-round. Commercial large scale dairy farms (CLD; 10%) showed the highest input and output levels. In all systems most of the produced milk was sold (SSM: 69%, SSD: 69%, CSD: 87%; CLD: 94%). Negligence in breeding, wastage of high yielding buffaloes, high costs of feedstuffs, an unfavorable marketing system and lack of a diversified dairy value chain were the main constraints for all production systems. Improving resources use efficiency, especially with respect to animal genetics and nutrition, should encourage these peri-urban dairy farmers to produce more milk for sale, serving both the increasing urban demand and their own income.

Book Impact Evaluation of Training Programmes on Dairy Farming in Punjab State

Download or read book Impact Evaluation of Training Programmes on Dairy Farming in Punjab State written by Manoj Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy farming is emerging in a big way in the recent years. Although production of milk has increased, productivity is still not up to the mark. KVK, Kapurthala has helped increase the knowledge, inculcate skills and improve socio economic status of the rural poor. It was found that the average herd size with dairy farmers increased from 7.68 to 9.21 after the training. Knowledge level of trainees in breed characteristics, disease management, feed management etc. also increased. Number of trainees having knowledge about feed preparation technology increased from 6.67 to 100.00 per cent. Average knowledge score of the trainees increased from 3.64 to 6.39. The acquired knowledge farmers actually applied at their farms, which resulted in enhancement of their daily income. It was noticed that none of the trainees used Urea Molasses Mineral Block (UMMB) licks before the training, while after training percentage of trainees using UMMB licks was 18.75 per cent. Hence, besides gain in knowledge there was adoption of demonstrated technologies among the dairy farmers. Because of improved management at dairy farms, the average milk production per animal per day increased from 6.76 l to 6.93 l. The average reduction in cost of management of disease per animal per year was approximately Rs. 708.22. Increase in net profit per animal per year was Rs. 2607.82. Thus, it can be concluded that specialized training courses in dairy farming are proving to be beneficial to the dairy farmers by enhancing their socio-economic status.

Book Vets and Veterinary Services

Download or read book Vets and Veterinary Services written by Food and Rural Environment Staff and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report raises concerns about the numbers of large animal practitioners, since the economics of farming is leading to less use of veterinary services and further reducing the attractiveness of large animal practice. At the same time the Government's animal health and welfare and veterinary surveillance strategies appear to require a greater on-farm presence of veterinary surgeons. DEFRA needs to be aware of the impact its strategies and changes to food safety rules will have on current and future demand for vets and should review its funding of veterinary research which underpins teaching. The State Veterinary Service has a key role to play in delivering animal health and welfare and veterinary surveillance strategies, and needs to improve its links with private sector vets to ensure that all those who play a part in improving the animal health and welfare of the nation are equipped to do so.
