Book excerpt: What is Import Substitution Industrialization The concept of import substitution industrialization (ISI) refers to a trade and economic policy that promotes the replacement of domestic manufacturing for imports from other countries. The idea is predicated on the assumption that a nation ought to make an effort to lessen its reliance on foreign sources by increasing the amount of industrialized goods that are produced domestically. The word is most commonly used to refer to development economics policies that were implemented in the 20th century; nevertheless, economists like as Friedrich List and Alexander Hamilton have been lobbying for its implementation since the 18th century. Book Between Empire and Globalization

Download or read book Between Empire and Globalization written by Albert Carreras and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a rigorously chronological journey through the economic history of modern Spain, always with an eye opened to what happens in the international economy and a focus on economic policy making and institutional change. It shows the central theme of the Spanish economy from the late 18th century to the early 21st century is the painful transformation from being a major imperial power to a small nation and later a member of the European Community and a player in a globalized economy. It looks in detail at two major issues - economic growth and convergence or divergence to the Western European pattern- and the permanent tension between the two when assessing historical experience since the industrial revolution. This book proposes new visions of the economic past of Spain and provides comparisons over time and space, which will be of interest to academics and students of economic history, European economic history and more specifically Spanish economic history.

Book A Thesis on the Rationales of Import Substitution Industrialization Strategy

Download or read book A Thesis on the Rationales of Import Substitution Industrialization Strategy written by Hong Liang and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research paper is to try to clarify and evaluate the major issues and arguments in the debate on Import Substitution Industrialization Strategy (ISI) between the neoclassical economists and the development economists. In particular, it will focus on some basic underlying models employed by the two schools of thought, rather than on specific policy recommendations given by either school. It will conclude that the critiques against ISI from the neoclassical economists are based on a static equilibrium model, which can not fully comprehend the dynamic relationship between growth and ISI at a macroeconomic level. This paper starts by examining the historical background and formative influences of ISI, then goes on to compare and contrast the structuralist rationales for ISI and neoclassical rationales against it. The conclusion I reached is that the fundamental rationales behind ISI-- the infant industry argument, external economies and linkages effects--remain intellectually valid. The issue of terms of trade has important relevance to development economics but should be studied in a different context. The general conclusion of this paper is that import substitution as an industrialization strategy remains viable and may be of great importance or less developed countries that want to catch up economically with industrialized countries.

And, in the wake of a decade-long debt crisis, the statist models of the past are giving way to a reliance on the market even as authoritarian rule seems to have ebbed in favor of new or reborn democratic institutions. As a result, the policy framework guiding economic and political development is likely to be fundamentally different. The analysis of Latin America needs a strong dose of modern political economy--one that can bring the area studies field up to date with the recent developments on the theoretical end of the economics and political science professions. This book helps fill that need. }

Book The Pitfalls of Protectionism Import Substitution Vs Export Oriented Industrial Policy

Download or read book The Pitfalls of Protectionism Import Substitution Vs Export Oriented Industrial Policy written by Reda Cherif and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial policies pursued in many developing countries in the 1950s-1970s largely failed while the industrial policies of the Asian Miracles succeeded. We argue that a key factor of success is industrial policy with export orientation in contrast to import substitution. Exporting encouraged competition, economies of scale, innovation, and local integration and provided market signals to policymakers. Even in a large market such as India, import substitution policies in the automotive industry failed because of micromanagement and misaligned incentives. We also analyze the risk tradeoffs involved in various industrial policy strategies and their implications on the 21st century industrial policies. While state interventions may be needed to develop some new capabilities and industries, trade protectionism is neither a necessary nor a sufficient tool and will most likely be counterproductive.
