Book excerpt: This paper studies the impact of trade liberalization on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in D-8 member countries, that are, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey over the time period of twenty two years (1991-2012). Using panel data random effect model, it has been revealed that trade liberalization is significantly and positively effecting FDI inflows to D-8 members. This study also show that the traditional location pull factors of FDI such as market size, economic growth, infrastructure and exchange rate are also desirable besides with trade liberalization for inward FDI in D-8 member nations.

He finds that PTA membership is associated with a positive change in net FDI inflows, and the FDI gains are increasing in the market size of the PTA partners and their proximity to the host country. The author identifies several different channels through which preferential trade liberalization may affect FDI, and confirms that both threshold effects (signing the agreement) and market size effects (joining a larger and faster-growing common market) are important determinants of net FDI inflows, although the latter seem to dominate. The estimated relationship is largely driven by North-South PTAs, and is most pronounced in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the period when the majority of "deep integration" PTAs had been advanced.

Using panel random effects model on annual data of 6 emerging countries including Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Russian Federation and Turkey from 1996 to 2014, it is found that liberalisation of trade and investment regime measured by trade agreements significantly affect the multinationals' overseas investment decision. Market size, development level and human capital, considered essential by foreign investors, also have a significant positive effect on incoming FDI. Preferential and regional trade agreements increase the openness of a country's economic and investment borders. They reduce duties, taxes, tariffs as well as the inflexibility in regime policies vis-à-vis foreign firm operations. This usually ensue trade and investment liberalisation and consequentially has a positive impact on FDI inflows to these nations. Among trade agreements only the preferential trade agreement is found to be significantly positive. It is plausible given the fact that except for Mexico all other countries selected are far away from the major FDI source nations.

This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.
