Book excerpt: The European Union (EU) has long been considered as one of South Africa's main trading partners. Although the trading agreements have been able to sustain South Africa's Economic development, the poor state of her economy from mid 2000 as a result of the crisis in Europe, has caused a shift in her international economic relations. This paper draws from a unique set of reports of the regional bloc data base of SADC and BRICS, detailing the changing character of South Africa's international relations during the Economic crisis and the potential effects of the change on South Africa and her international partners. The analysis identifies an increasing international cooperation between South Africa, SADC and BRICS not cancelling her trading links with the EU. The thesis argues that international relations will no longer be the same again as the present international system is adjusting itself to meet with the economic needs of the emerging new world order.

It focuses on the parties and party systems of four South European countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece) between 2008-15. The authors also consider how elections, protests, and interests are affected by the crisis in these four democracies, before assessing how to define the impact of the economic crisis on political participation and competition. In this vein the book analyzes relevant aspects of party systems, the notion of neo-populism as a key to understanding new actors of South European policy, and interest intermediation as a factor of weakness in managing the crisis. Finally, the authors summarize the empirical results emerging from the research: the partial reshaping of cleavages as well as the relevance of the establishment vs. anti-establishment cleavage for the emergence and success of neo-populist parties. The conference was organised in response to the financial crisis of 2008 which started in the United States and Europe, with reverberating effects on a global scale. Economic problems emanating from such crises usually leave major social and structural impacts on important sectors of the society internationally. They affect living standards and constrain the well-being of people, especially in poor countries. Persistent problems include high unemployment, increased debt and low growth in developed countries, as well as greater difficulties in accessing finance for investment in the developing world. There is a need for countries in the South to examine the available options for appropriate national and regional responses to the different problems emanating from the economic crisis. This book attempts to provide ideas on some strategic responses to the disastrous impact of the crisis, while keeping in mind the global common interest of the South. It is hoped that the book will contribute significantly towards the agenda to rethink development and the quest for alternative paradigms for a just, stable and equitable global political, economic and social system. A system in which Africa, Asia, and Latin America are emancipated from the shackles of hegemonic and anachronistic neoliberal dictates that have nothing more to offer than crises, vulnerabilities and dependency.
