Book Ethnic Mobilization Violence and the Politics of Affect

Download or read book Ethnic Mobilization Violence and the Politics of Affect written by Adis Maksić and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an unprecedented account of the Serb Democratic Party’s origins and its political machinations that culminated in Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II. Within the first two years of its existence, the nationalist movement led by the infamous genocide convict Radovan Karadzic, radically transformed Bosnian society. It politically homogenized Serbs of Bosnia-Herzegovina, mobilized them for the Bosnian War, and violently carved out a new geopolitical unit, known today as Republika Srpska. Through innovative and in-depth analysis of the Party’s discourse that makes use of the recent literature on affective cognition, the book argues that the movement’s production of existential fears, nationalist pride, and animosities towards non-Serbs were crucial for creating Serbs as a palpable group primed for violence. By exposing this nationalist agency, the book challenges a commonplace image of ethnic conflicts as clashes of long-standing ethnic nations.

Book Brickyards to Graveyards

Download or read book Brickyards to Graveyards written by Villia Jefremovas and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brickyards to Graveyards examines how the overidealized picture of Rwanda as the darling of the world community in the 1980s was shattered amidst the genocide that occurred a decade later. The brick and tile industries of Rwanda provide a microcosm to examine the transformation of gender, class, and power relations through the precolonial, colonial, and postcolonial periods, and provide insights into the explosive impact of these changes on Rwandan culture and society. The book illustrates how these gender, class, and power relations played out in times of economic, political, and demographic crisis, and argues that these factors have not changed significantly since the Rwandan Patriotic Front took power in 1994.

Book Funerary Monuments in the Interior of the Roman Province of Dalmatia

This book was released on 2021 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Dalmatia between Ottoman and Venetian Rule

Download or read book Dalmatia between Ottoman and Venetian Rule written by Tea Mayhew and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2013-11-27T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an overview of the crucial events that took place during the passage from the Ottoman to the Venetian rules in the Dalmatian hinterland during the Candian and Morean Wars in the second half of the 17th century. The hinterland of the capital city of the Venetian dual province of Dalmatia and Albania – the city of Zadar/Zara – has been used here as a case study to depict all the changes relating to: inhabitation, the appearance of settlements, changes in the populations and migrations, the forms and models of administrative and political institutions, specific border economies and the development of Venetian border areas through trade with the Ottomans alongside agriculture in the contado. Studied here is how the city of Zadar, whose life was organised as a typical coastal community like many in the Venetian Republic along with its contado, managed to enlarge its territory and incorporate elements of Ottoman political, administrative and cultural heritage along with thousands of Ottoman Christian subjects.

Book Deleuze and Geophilosophy

Download or read book Deleuze and Geophilosophy written by Mark Bonta and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to use complexity theory to open up the 'geophilosophy' developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in A Thousand Plateaus, Anti-Oedipus and What is Philosophy?. Written by a philosopher and a geographer in a clear style, with a practical orientation and interdisciplinary focus, the Guide enables readers to grasp the basics of complexity theory (the study of self-organisation and emergence in material systems), while the Glossary eases the difficulty of applying this science to Deleuze and Guattari's often perplexing terminology. Deleuze and Geophilosophy is thoroughly pragmatic: it asks not what the earth means, but how it works. It provides a common conceptual framework within which physical and human geographers can work together alongside other social scientists, cultural studies practitioners, and philosophers in interdisciplinary teams to explore the entangled flows, lines, grids, and spaces of our world. The book will be of interest to all those working in disciplines at the intersections of culture, nature, space, and history: anthropology, art and architecture theory, communication studies, geography, Marxism and historical materialism, philosophy, postcolonial theory, urban studies, and many other disciplines.Key Features:*Explores a new aspect of Deleuzian thought - 'geophilosophy' (geography & philosophy) *The first part of the book explains the basics of complexity theory*Half of the book is a Glossary which helps readers with Deleuze and Guattari's perplexing terminology*Emphasis on 'bodies politic' in geophilosophy and complexity theory which has never before been linked in such a way
