Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Notes on English Church History, Vol. 2 In October, 1886, the writer submitted to the public a volume of 'Illustrated Notes' on the early history of British Christianity the preface to which contained a conditional promise of a supplementary series. The circulation of nearly forty thousand copies of that volume was taken as a proof that its plan and price met a felt want, and the present volume is the fulfilment of the pledge. It is hardly needful to repeat that these 'Notes' do not claim to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject. The main plan of both volumes has been to give prominence to the concurrent history of the Church and Realm; to show that through all ages they have been indissolubly wedded; and to present the Church's ancient, mediaeval, and modern history as parts of one continuous whole, with the Episcopate for its basis. Upon this continuous thread of general history a number of disconnected ecclesiastical events have been strung, bearing mainly upon questions recently raised by friends and foes alike. The history of the Anglican Church beyond the seas is outside the plan of this book, and is therefore only incidentally treated. As the price implies, these 'Notes' are chiefly intended for Church-folk of slender means; and students must not regard them as other than stepping stones to works of higher merit. Apart from this question of cheapness it may well be doubted whether there is any necessity for treating the history of the Church of England anew; especially as there is nothing stated herein which has not been better said over and over again. Indeed it would seem that most persons who deal with this subject find it impossible to say anything fresh, or to put their thoughts in novel phrases. The great zeal of this ago for what was done in that, about religion, has made the History of it to be received and read with more than ordinary attention and care: and many have expressed their satisfaction in what was formerly published, by contributing several papers of great consequence to what remained. And since I found no part of the first volume was more universally acceptable, than that wherein I was only a transcriber; I mean the Collection of Records and authentic Papers, which I had set down in confirmation of the more remarkable and doubtful parts of the History; I continue the same method now. I shall repeat nothing here that was in my former preface; but refer the reader to such things as concern this History in general, and my encouragement in the undertaking and prosecution of it, to what is there premised to the whole work: and therefore I shall now enlarge on such things as do more particularly relate to this volume. It should not be forgotten that every minister, who was properly Puritan, felt himself threatened by the orders to en force conformity and that therefore very nearly the whole strength of the party ought to be found in the estimate. The tally of 297 men2 gives nearly the figure we meet so often in Puritan accounts, and is very near the 281 men whose names are now known as adhe rents of the party.' The figure 300, therefore, which we meet so often is more likely the number of men who believed themselves to be threatened than the number who were actually proceeded against by the bishops. The title explains itself. The work is not an exhaustive history, but a collection of notes thereon, to meet inquiries for a cheap illustrated book about the Church of England. Church histories hitherto have mostly been written for students, or are beyond the financial reach of the general public. Such popular handy volumes as bear upon the subject deal mainly with special aspects, or do not afford so clear an idea of its consecutiveness as will enable the majority of Church-goers to meet erroneous assertions of those who differ from the doctrines of, or envy the noble position occupied by the English Church. To place a connected series of historical facts before the public, at a price within the reach of the humblest, was the chief object of the author. At the same time readers are warned not to expect herein a complete record of all the important events and persons connected with our Church in every age, but only to look for sufficient typical examples as will help them to judge for themselves of the incorrectness of theories recently advanced by modern adversaries of the English Church; as for instance - (1) That it is of comparatively recent origin; or (2) that it owes its existence, position, and emoluments to the favour of the civil government; or (3) that whatever of its history belongs to antiquity is traceable to its connexion with and subjection to the Church of Rome.
