Download or read book In Their Footsteps written by Arnold E. Palmer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-11-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Their Footsteps is a Genealogical compilation of approximately 900 individuals and the story of how this Palmer Family came to be and where it came from. As one might expect, the geography of a complicated genealogy such as this one has several disparate locations of importance. Thankfully, these ancestors chose to cluster around a select few well documented locales: New England, lower New York State, Northeastern New Jersey, Central New York State and the upper Saint John River valley in New Brunswick, Canada. It also tells the story of how and why Samuel Benson Leydecker chose exile in the wilderness of New Brunswick over the prospects of staying in the Hackensack River valley of New Jersey after the American Revolution.

Download or read book The Papers of Henry Clay written by Henry Clay and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This supplement to The Papers of Henry Clay contains documents discovered too late to be included in the proper chronological sequence in earlier volumes. Spanning the years from 1793 to 1852, the items shed important light on Clay's early years in Kentucky, his legal career, and his work for the Bank of the United States. Material dealing with the "Corrupt Bargain" charge is particularly rich, and many of the letters that appear in this volume fill gaps in exchanges already published. Clay's correspondence with Benjamin Watkins Lee of Virginia and Mary Bayard, wife of Delaware senator Richard Henry Bayard, is especially interesting. An essay on Clay portraits by Clifford Amyx, professor emeritus of art at the University of Kentucky, provides a detailed discussion of the paintings, statues, busts, engravings, and daguerreotypes that featured Clay as the subject. Appended to the essay is a calendar listing each major work, the artist, date of completion, and present location. A comprehensive bibliography of works cited in the entire series will benefit researchers seeking information in addition to that provided in the annotations. This supplement is an essential addition to the earlier volumes in the series.
Download or read book Rufus Jones 1863 1948 written by Claus Bernet and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Jones (1863-1948) helped organize the Quäkerspeisung (Quaker feeding effort), saving millions from starvation after the First World War. In Germany he is best known for having travelled to Berlin to seek a personal meeting with Hitler after the Kristallnacht in 1938. And, at the conclusion of a long life devoted to service, it was largely due to Jones that the American Friends Service Committee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. But Jones was also the quintessential «American scholar», seeking to harmonize theory and practice. He was a pivotal figure of the 20thcentury who stayed in close touch with authors and statesmen the world over. He earned a reputation as a modern mystic and an active pacifist, and was regarded as the moral conscience of his era. His scholarship encompassed education and pedagogy, philosophical questions, church and Quaker history, as well as the political issues of the day. Jones dealt with such issues as justice, democracy, and child-rearing. His ideas are still alive today and still arouse controversy. He was particularly anxious to avoid the cultivation of an elite, pleading instead for individual growth and personality development. Over the course of his life, he was awarded twelve academic titles, taught at numerous universities, delivered countless lectures, and was one of the first theologians to recognise the significance of radio and to make full use of it. To this day Rufus Jones is still honored as a «seer», «Protestant mystic», and even as a «Master Quaker» and «Quaker Giant». It is time also to take a critical look at these honors.

This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For our third book on stagecoach history, we have chosen the stage routes connecting Maine's three capitals, Boston, Portland and Augusta. Preceding stagecoach travel in the west by at least forty years, travel in the east started in the late 18th century and was in full swing until the railroads took over in the 1840s. Subjects covered include an overview of why Maine's capital moved from Boston to Portland and finally to Augusta; the building of the stage roads; formation of the stage lines; taverns and inns along the way and personal accounts of travel and experiences on the stage routes. Over 100 black and white images coupled with twenty-two color photos provide a unique glimpse into Maine's past.
