Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique mock-up for a book, prepared in a form ready for the printer, composed from the original printed pages published in the Illustrated Australian Magazine (Melbourne: Ham Brothers, 1850-1852), with a small number of handwritten annotations. The first article, 'Ballarat, a Pilgrimage in Sundry Fyttes', is an early extended reflective account of Victoria's gold rush, and provided an opportunity for possibly the first exposure of Thomas Ham's illustrations. The other contributions cover a wide range of topics and reflect the author's archaeological, musical, scientific, educational, historical and belles lettres interests.

Book Profile Pieces

Download or read book Profile Pieces written by Sue Joseph and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history, theory and journalistic practice of profile writing. Profiles, and the practice of writing them, are of increasing interest to scholars of journalism because conflicts between the interviewer and the subject exemplify the changing nature of journalism itself. While the subject, often through the medium of their press representative, struggles to retain control of the interview space, the journalist seeks to subvert it. This interesting and multi-layered interaction, however, has rarely been subject to critical scrutiny, partly because profiles have traditionally been regarded as public relations exercises or as ‘soft’ journalism. However, chapters in this volume reveal not only that profiling has, historically, taken many different forms, but that the idea of the interview as a contested space has applications beyond the subject of celebrated individuals. The volume looks at the profile’s historical beginnings, at the contemporary manufacture of celebrity versus the ‘ordinary’, at profiling communities, countries and movements, at profiling the destitute, at sporting personalities and finally at profiling and trauma.

Download or read book Skin Deep written by Liz Conor and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skin Deep looks at the preoccupations of European-Australians in their encounters with Aboriginal women and the tropes, types, and perceptions that seeped into everyday settler-colonial thinking. Early erroneous and uninformed accounts of Aboriginal women and culture were repeated throughout various print forms and imagery, both in Australia and in Europe, with names, dates, and locations erased so that individual women came to be anonymized as 'gins' and 'lubras.' The book identifies and traces the various tropes used to typecast Aboriginal women, contributing to their lasting hold on the colonial imagination even after conflicting records emerged. The colonial archive itself, consisting largely of accounts by white men, is critiqued in the book. Construction of Aboriginal women's gender and sexuality was a form of colonial control, and Skin Deep shows how the industrialization of print was critical to this control, emerging as it did alongside colonial expansion. For nearly all settlers, typecasting Aboriginal women through name-calling and repetition of tropes sufficed to evoke an understanding that was surface-based and half-knowing: only skin deep. *** "Impressively researched, written, organized and presented...highly recommended for community and academic library Aboriginal Studies, Women's Studies, Australian Studies, and Colonial History reference collections." --Midwest Book Review, MBR Bookwatch: October 2016, Helen's Bookshelf [Subject: Cultural History, Aboriginal Studies, Women's Studies, Australian Studies, Colonial Studies]

Book Australian Predators of the Sky

Download or read book Australian Predators of the Sky written by Penny Olsen and published by National Library of Australia. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian predators of the sky are some of the most admired and the most despised of the bird world. Raptors are admired for their strength and independence, but despised for their depredations on livestock and favourite garden birds, while the owls are at once respected for their wisdom and watchfulness and feared for their mournful cries and association with darkness and ill-omen. The book begins with fascinating descriptions by award-winning natural history author Penny Olsen on the discovery and illustration of birds of prey in Australia, and their characteristics and ecology, followed by full-colour illustrations of each species by a variety of artists, accompanied by intriguing notes about the birds. Australian Predators of the Sky comprises over 200 striking paintings, lithographs and engravings of all 34 Australian species—25 diurnal birds of prey such as eagles, hawks and falcons, and nine owls such as hawk-owls and barn-owls.
