This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. DOI: 10.13134/979-12-5977-348-7

Book Teaching Bearing the Torch

Download or read book Teaching Bearing the Torch written by Pamela J. Farris and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers are torchbearers—leaders who impart knowledge, truth, or inspiration to others. Pamela Farris, joined by Patricia Rieman in the latest edition of this exceptional foundations text, clearly demonstrates how teachers bear the torch. The authors’ well-researched approach provides both positive and negative aspects of education trends. Their generous use of examples shows how teaching and schooling fit into the broader context of U.S. society and how they match up with other societies throughout the world. Farris and Rieman’s lively writing style instills teacher education candidates with a lucid understanding of such topics as philosophy and history of education, national trends, requirements of becoming a teacher, teachers’ salaries, how schools are governed and funded, demographic changes and expectations for the future, differences in rural and urban schools, and use of technology. Detailed lists of a variety of websites provide additional resources. Anecdotes of professionals in the field—authentic-voice narratives with frank insights into real-world teaching experiences—punctuate the text. Boxed scenarios concentrate on important issues and educators, energize readers’ interest, and stimulate proactive thinking. Other outstanding features are the book’s affordability and versatility. Instructors can easily assign all or a portion of the chapters to fit course needs.

Book Online teaching practices

Download or read book Online teaching practices written by Karin Bolldén and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to describe and analyse online teaching practices in the Swedish higher education context. The study had an online ethnographic approach and was based on empirical data on the teaching in two university courses. The study rested primarily on observational data but interviews and available documents also formed the basis for analysis. Empirical data were analysed with a perspective of practice theory – a perspective within a sociomaterial account. The results showed that online teaching was characterised by an embodied sociomaterial practice. The teacher’s body could be understood as both multiple and closely interwoven with technology. Furthermore, the teacher’s body was used in the teaching situation to reduce technological complexity but also, along with other forms of materiality, to prefigure what kind of teaching would take place. Teacher interventions in online environments could furthermore be understood as relational to both technology (that is the virtual material arrangement) and teachers’ doings and sayings (that is the teaching practice). Teacher interventions were aimed at making the arrangement intelligible for the students. The study showed that teacher interventions arranged both students and information and communication technology (ICT) in order to make them work as a teaching practice. The teaching practice that emerged was characterised as an interplay between virtual materiality and social practice, where asymmetricrelations between teachers and the ICT prevailed.

Book excerpt: Technology promises to make learning better, cheaper, faster—but rarely has it kept that promise. The allure of educational technology is easy to understand. Classroom instruction is an expensive and time-consuming process fraught with contradictory theories and frustratingly uneven results. Educators, inspired by machines’ contributions to modern life, have been using technology to facilitate teaching for centuries. In Teaching Machines, Bill Ferster examines past attempts to automate instruction from the earliest use of the postal service for distance education to the current maelstrom surrounding Massive Open Online Courses. He tells the stories of the entrepreneurs and visionaries who, beginning in the colonial era, developed and promoted various instructional technologies. Ferster touches on a wide range of attempts to enhance the classroom experience with machines, from hornbooks, the Chautauqua movement, and correspondence courses to B. F. Skinner’s teaching machine, intelligent tutoring systems, and eLearning. The famed progressive teachers, researchers, and administrators that the book highlights often overcame substantial hurdles to implement their ideas, but not all of them succeeded in improving the quality of education. Teaching Machines provides invaluable new insight into our current debate over the efficacy of educational technology.
