Book excerpt: "This book sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated the Council. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of late Jansenism. Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the ultramontane nineteenth-century Church. Nevertheless, much of the Pistoian agenda - such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire Church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions - was officially promulgated at Vatican II. The career of Bishop Scipione de'Ricci (1741-1810) and the famous Synod he convened are investigated in detail. The international reception (and rejection) of the Synod sheds light on why these reforms failed, and the criteria of Yves Congar are used to judge the Pistoian Synod as "true or false reform." This book proves that the Synod was a "ghost" present at Vatican II. The council fathers struggled with, and ultimately enacted, many of the same ideas. This study complexifies the story of the roots of the Council and Pope Benedict XVI's "hermeneutic of reform," which seeks to interpret Vatican II as in "continuity and discontinuity on different levels" with past teaching and practice. Book excerpt: This volume, published in honor of historian Geoffrey Parker, explores the working of European empires in a global perspective, focusing on one of the most important themes of Parker’s work: the limits of empire, which is to say, the centrifugal forces - sacral, dynastic, military, diplomatic, geographical, informational - that plagued imperial formations in the early modern period (1500-1800). During this time of wrenching technological, demographic, climatic, and economic change, empires had to struggle with new religious movements, incipient nationalisms, new sea routes, new military technologies, and an evolving state system with complex new rules of diplomacy. Engaging with a host of current debates, the chapters in this book break away from conventional historical conceptions of empire as an essentially western phenomenon with clear demarcation lines between the colonizer and the colonized. These are replaced here by much more fluid and subtle conceptions that highlight complex interplays between coalitions of rulers and ruled. In so doing, the volume builds upon recent work that increasingly suggests that empires simply could not exist without the consent of their imperial subjects, or at least significant groups of them. This was as true for the British Raj as it was for imperial China or Russia. Whilst the thirteen chapters in this book focus on a number of geographic regions and adopt different approaches, each shares a focus on, and interest in, the working of empires and the ways that imperial formations dealt with - or failed to deal with - the challenges that beset them. Taken together, they reflect a new phase in the evolving historiography of empire. They also reflect the scholarly contributions of the dedicatee, Geoffrey Parker, whose life and work are discussed in the introductory chapters and, we’re proud to say, in a delightful chapter by Parker himself, an autobiographical reflection that closes the book.

Book excerpt: The complete history of J ansenism will probably never be written because to write it would involve the study of a movement that grew and changed constantly for more than two hundred years and found a different expression in many countries, especially France, Holland, and Italy. Of course the ordinary Frenchman of any education would think that he knew something about Jansenism. For him, and for many Englishmen of some French culture, Jansenism is a heresy about grace and predestination that found expression in the Augustinus of Cornelius Janssens or Jansenius, Bishop of Ypres and at one time professor in the university of Louvain. 1 The theological position of J ansenius was adopted by his friend, Jean Duvergier de Hauranne, commonly known as the Abbe de S. Cyran, a director of the monas tery of Port Royal des Champs. Through its relations with S. Cyran and with Antoine Arnauld, brother of Angelique Arnauld, Abbess of Port Royal, the monastery entered into the theological controversies of the time, especially after Arnauld's severe moral work - De fa Frl quente Communion. 2 But to the ordinary Frenchman, Port Royal, besides its quarrels about predestination, is chiefly memorable for its great literary names, Pascal, Racine, Boileau, and to some extent La Fontaine and Mme de Sevigne. What Jansenism really stood for and what became of its ideal after the brutal demolition of Port Royal in 1709 by Louis XIV is but little known.
