Book excerpt: Everyone aspires to be the greatest version of themselves, yet only a small percentage of people truly achieve this goal. When it comes to attaining success, pursuing our aspirations, and leading a life that is filled with passion and purpose, we are our own greatest adversaries. Some of us are self-destructive without even recognizing it, while others are aware of their destructive tendencies but lack the means and/or knowledge to change their ways.

Book The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt

Download or read book The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt written by Edmund Morris and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE AND THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • One of Modern Library’s 100 best nonfiction books of all time • One of Esquire’s 50 best biographies of all time “A towering biography . . . a brilliant chronicle.”—Time This classic biography is the story of seven men—a naturalist, a writer, a lover, a hunter, a ranchman, a soldier, and a politician—who merged at age forty-two to become the youngest President in history. The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt begins at the apex of his international prestige. That was on New Year’s Day, 1907, when TR, who had just won the Nobel Peace Prize, threw open the doors of the White House to the American people and shook 8,150 hands. One visitor remarked afterward, “You go to the White House, you shake hands with Roosevelt and hear him talk—and then you go home to wring the personality out of your clothes.” The rest of this book tells the story of TR’s irresistible rise to power. During the years 1858–1901, Theodore Roosevelt transformed himself from a frail, asthmatic boy into a full-blooded man. Fresh out of Harvard, he simultaneously published a distinguished work of naval history and became the fist-swinging leader of a Republican insurgency in the New York State Assembly. He chased thieves across the Badlands of North Dakota with a copy of Anna Karenina in one hand and a Winchester rifle in the other. Married to his childhood sweetheart in 1886, he became the country squire of Sagamore Hill on Long Island, a flamboyant civil service reformer in Washington, D.C., and a night-stalking police commissioner in New York City. As assistant secretary of the navy, he almost single-handedly brought about the Spanish-American War. After leading “Roosevelt’s Rough Riders” in the famous charge up San Juan Hill, Cuba, he returned home a military hero, and was rewarded with the governorship of New York. In what he called his “spare hours” he fathered six children and wrote fourteen books. By 1901, the man Senator Mark Hanna called “that damned cowboy” was vice president. Seven months later, an assassin’s bullet gave TR the national leadership he had always craved. His is a story so prodigal in its variety, so surprising in its turns of fate, that previous biographers have treated it as a series of haphazard episodes. This book, the only full study of TR’s pre-presidential years, shows that he was an inevitable chief executive. “It was as if he were subconsciously aware that he was a man of many selves,” the author writes, “and set about developing each one in turn, knowing that one day he would be President of all the people.”

Book Colonel Roosevelt

Download or read book Colonel Roosevelt written by Edmund Morris and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • “Colonel Roosevelt is compelling reading, and [Edmund] Morris is a brilliant biographer who practices his art at the highest level. . . . A moving, beautifully rendered account.”—Fred Kaplan, The Washington Post This biography by Edmund Morris, the Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning author of The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt and Theodore Rex, marks the completion of a trilogy sure to stand as definitive. Of all our great presidents, Theodore Roosevelt is the only one whose greatness increased out of office. What other president has written forty books, hunted lions, founded a third political party, survived an assassin’s bullet, and explored an unknown river longer than the Rhine? Packed with more adventure, variety, drama, humor, and tragedy than a big novel, yet documented down to the smallest fact, this masterwork recounts the last decade of perhaps the most amazing life in American history. “Hair-raising . . . awe-inspiring . . . a worthy close to a trilogy sure to be regarded as one of the best studies not just of any president, but of any American.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOREWORD BY BRENE BROWN and POSTSCRIPT FROM BRAIN PICKINGS CREATOR MARIA POPOVA Rock star, crowdfunding pioneer, and TED speaker Amanda Palmer knows all about asking. Performing as a living statue in a wedding dress, she wordlessly asked thousands of passersby for their dollars. When she became a singer, songwriter, and musician, she was not afraid to ask her audience to support her as she surfed the crowd (and slept on their couches while touring). And when she left her record label to strike out on her own, she asked her fans to support her in making an album, leading to the world's most successful music Kickstarter. Even while Amanda is both celebrated and attacked for her fearlessness in asking for help, she finds that there are important things she cannot ask for-as a musician, as a friend, and as a wife. She learns that she isn't alone in this, that so many people are afraid to ask for help, and it paralyzes their lives and relationships. In this groundbreaking book, she explores these barriers in her own life and in the lives of those around her, and discovers the emotional, philosophical, and practical aspects of THE ART OF ASKING. Part manifesto, part revelation, this is the story of an artist struggling with the new rules of exchange in the twenty-first century, both on and off the Internet. THE ART OF ASKING will inspire readers to rethink their own ideas about asking, giving, art, and love.

Book Mary Tudor

Download or read book Mary Tudor written by HFM Prescott and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly-readable popular biography of 'Bloody Mary' - winner of the James Tait Black prize. Mary I is notorious for her persecution of Protestants and has been vilified by generations of partisan historians. H.F.M. Prescott brings a more humane and measured perspective to the life of this tormented woman. First published in 1940 under the title SPANISH TUDOR, Prescott's biography won the James Tait Black prize the following year. An extensively revised and updated edition was published in 1953 under the title MARY TUDOR. Prescott sums up her subject's life as follows: 'Perhaps no other reign in English history has seen such a great endeavour made, and so utterly defeated. All that Mary did was undone, all she intended utterly unfulfilled...mistaken often, almost always misguided in her public office, with much blindness, some rancour, some jealousy, some stupid cruelty to answer for, she had yet trodden, lifelong and manfully, the way that other sinners know.'

Book If You Can t Be Better Than an N Word Then Who Can You Be Better Than

Download or read book If You Can t Be Better Than an N Word Then Who Can You Be Better Than written by Thomas Sass and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americas elites utilize the divide-and-conquer strategy, and with African Americans, they have found their first target. Centuries of brainwashing have instilled a superiority high in many whites and at the same time placed blacks in less-than positions. I intend to show to what extent Apartheidism and the less-than culture affect blacks in several different environments, such as how the criminal justice system is used to marginalize and criminalize blacks at rates disproportionate to their population. Even the sports world can be more problematic for blacks than for non-blacks. I will present people and events that will show the double standards society has been led to not only accept but to expect, and just how easily we seem to have been manipulated. Most, and perhaps none of which could have been so relatively easily accomplished if the drug of superiority did not cloud our perceptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cancer of political correctness has not only helped to form a society of insincere, oversensitive, and under-achieving people-it has deprived individuals from the joy of living authentically and boldly. Well, living authentically and boldly has never been a problem for Larry Winget. Known as the Pitbull of Personal Development, Larry is not afraid to tell it like it is about what it takes to be successful. And he's also not afraid of skewering some of those well-known shibboleths of personal development---like The Law of Attraction and the path of effortless success that are peddled by so many motivational speakers. In this book, Larry will take on the political correctness that has infected our society, and the personal development industry. He’ll outline an effective back to the basics approach to help YOU be more successful. Larry still believes that hard work and excellence are the keys to success and communicates that like no other person on the planet can! Larry makes you think. He makes you uncomfortable. He offers common sense solutions that are impossible to argue with. On top of all that, he is hilarious. Learn: • Why being politically correct will leave you unhappy, uninspired and unsure about your future. • Why it takes a contrarian approach to be successful and true to yourself in this upside-down politically correct world. • Why you need to fix yourself first rather than putting your focus on how to fix others or society. • Why letting go of your need for approval is essential to happiness. • How to get to the point and ask for what you want in life-directly and decisively. • How to make big, bold and brash plans for your life. • The biggest problem preventing entrepreneurs from being successful in business in our modern world. • How getting rid of politically correct excuses about money can save you financially.

Book Eliminating Waste in Business

Download or read book Eliminating Waste in Business written by Linda M. Orr and published by Apress. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redundant employees. Storerooms full of extra stock "in case we need it." Marketing money sprayed in all directions in the vain hope it will create customers. Duplicate IT systems. HR policies that fatten the corporate waistline rather than keeping it trim. Budgeting exercises that result in "more of the same, plus 2%." Nearly every corner of most established businesses harbors waste—wasted money, time, effort, or all three. As any runner can tell you, a lean body runs faster and wins races. The same goes when it comes to the competitive race all businesses engage in. Lean companies innovate faster, market more effectively, operate more smoothly, and achieve greater profitability. Eliminating Waste in Business: Run Lean, Boost Profitability highlights common ways that businesses across all industries waste money without realizing it. Taking an analytical, hands-on view, this book challenges universally accepted business practices—some even taught in business schools—by pointing out how these practices drive waste, and then showing how to eliminate it and reap the benefits. In eight meaty chapters, operations expert Dave J. Orr, and sales and marketing authority Linda M. Orr, tackle some of the obvious and easy-to-get-rid-of organizational fat and time wasters (meetings, anyone?) that for whatever reason many managers are blind to. They'll also show you how to employ lean six sigma and other methods to improve operational processes, inventory management, and more. But this book goes beyond these things and covers such areas as marketing and advertising spending, headcount and personnel administration, finance, and the many categories that make up what is in many companies a bloated monster: overhead. With an emphasis on employing technology and smart management to drive down costs, this book will take a comprehensive view of the broad spectrum of money and time wasters and show you how to get rid of them once and for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young dramatic girl who dreams to inspire others through writing. I like myself better when I write because I get to reflect before I put my thoughts and ideas into words. Initially, I didn’t foresee myself to be a storyteller because I was apathetic in words and poetry. But over the years, I surprised myself a lot to be the person I am today.
