Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idle Hours in a Library The essay on the Restoration novel is reproduced, greatly changed and somewhat amplified, from the English magazine, Time. The remainder of the volume has not before been in print. In such a book as this, it would be pedantic to make a display of authorities and references, though I hope that any direct indebtedness has always been duly recorded in the proper place. But I must do myself the pleasure of adding, that here, as elsewhere in my work, I have gained more than I can say from the help and encouragement of my wife. Download or read book Thoughts for Idle Hours Classic Reprint written by Maggie Pogue Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts for Idle Hours Somebody's Mother The world in its wild and maddened flight Goes heedlessly along, Pays no thought to the darkest night, And heeds not a ceaseless throng. A wanderer poor and forsaken May pass by one then another, But he's not noticed at all, Lest it be by somebody's mother. Somebody's mother, tho' old and gray, And bent by life's lengthened years, Has helped the beggar, so poor, by the way, And gives him her prayers and her tears. The girl who falls by the wayside, And wrecks her dear sacred life, Who ceases to heed to her guide, Repents in bitter strife. The world now laughs her to scorn, Kicked and buffed by one then another, She begs for sympathy long - None offers but somebody's mother. Somebody's mother holds out her hand, To take this wanderer in, Battered and cuffed by a reckless band, With tattered garments of sin. The boy who has lived the most reckless life, And in shame wanders wildly home; Thro' the world he stumbles in darkness of night, With a pillow of rock or stone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shuttlecock Papers: A Book for an Idle Hour In collecting the following reprints I have merely attempted to compile "a book for an idle hour." There is no lofty "purpose" about the volume, neither has it any important "mission: " it is simply intended to amuse. If, concealed within the jam of amusement, may be discovered a few grains of the powder of instruction, I sincerely trust I may be pardoned. I have endeavoured to so thickly gild the pill of knowledge that its bitterness will be almost imperceptible. The papers were originally written in all sorts of places, at home and abroad, during a shuttlecock existence in which I was knocked about by the battledore of circumstance during the last three years. If these fugitive writings, now that they have assumed the toga virilis of book-hood, should ever find their way back to their birthplaces and be the means of there whiling away dull moments, I shall indeed be glad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dreams of an Idle Hour Then I dream of the happiest days that I know When life is young and gay, And I long for the maiden with heart all aglow In the flowery meadows Of May. The beautiful city now loses its charm' Its gardens and palaces fair I fain would exchange for a cottage and farm And a breath of the pure country air. I weary of turmoil and bustle and strife; 'tis now I would hie me away And rest from the arduous duties of life, In the flowery meadows of May. A rider rode up, and alighted, and stood The vehicle's egress to bar; And they all said, "Too bad, that a guest should be late For the feasting at Chateau Nevarre!" He drew from his bosom a parchment and read, And the paper was sealed with a star; And attached the calash for the creditors of The Countess, nee Lulu De Barre. the phantom bark. kN Christmas night, by soft twilight, 'As loud the winds did roar, And the ocean spray, in wild affray, Lashed on the rocky shore, A maiden bright, attired in white, Approached the cheerless strand, And stood beside the rushing tide, A picture pure and grand. O'er the ocean wide, in gorgeous pride, And breakers capped with foam, She looked afar, where sturdy tar In gallant bark doth roam. She viewed the sea with searching e'e, And thought of years ago, When life was bright, for love's pure light Enhallowed every woe. That Christmas eve, ere he did leave For scenes of strife his home, O 'er the ocean wild, of fate the child, A mariner to roam. When war would cease, he vowed, and peace The Union should reign o'er, He'd come in pride to claim his bride, And leave her nevermore. For five long years of woeful fears She waited, but in vain, Sad and forlorn, for his return Home from the foaming main. By a rugged ledge, near the water's edge, She paused in sore dismay, As a bark and crew came up in view, Far out upon the bay. Each spar was bent to fullest dint By fierce and blustering wind; Each sail was spread, and straight and staid Her course to...

Book Books for Idle Hours

Download or read book Books for Idle Hours written by Donna Harrington-Lueker and published by UMass + ORM. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publishing phenomenon of summer reading, often focused on novels set in vacation destinations, started in the nineteenth century, as both print culture and tourist culture expanded in the United States. As an emerging middle class increasingly embraced summer leisure as a marker of social status, book publishers sought new market opportunities, authors discovered a growing readership, and more readers indulged in lighter fare. Drawing on publishing records, book reviews, readers' diaries, and popular novels of the period, Donna Harrington-Lueker explores the beginning of summer reading and the backlash against it. Countering fears about the dangers of leisurely reading—especially for young women—publishers framed summer reading not as a disreputable habit but as a respectable pastime and welcome respite. Books for Idle Hours sheds new light on an ongoing seasonal publishing tradition.
