Esaminiamo, per rispetto all'italiano, alcune delle principali, di quelle che ebbero una maggiore autorita. Il Giambullari, dotto uomo dell' erudito cinquecento, compose un libro apposito per discorrere le origini della lingua ch'ei chiamava fiorentina; e rigettando come assurda la Opinione che la faceva derivare dalla corruzione del latino, si fece a dimostrare con erudizione pomposa che era invece un componimento di varie lingue, di etrusco, di greco, di latino, di tedesco, di francese, e che derivava principalmente dall'arameo, padre fortunato dell'etrusco e dell'ebraico. Sifi'atta stranezza ha riscontro in quella del Guichard e del Thomassin, i quali dalla lingua ebraica vollero far derivare il francese. Meno strana ci si presenta la Opi nione del Bembo, il quale, dopo avere sentenziato, con quella sua forma piu petto ruta che grave, essere impossibile di sapere appunto quando la lingua italiana na scesse, quanto poi al modo onde nacque, soggiunge, che fu senza dubbio dal latino, andatosi via via modificando, alterando, rinnovando per Opera delle lingue parlate dai barbari: per cui accadde che in processo di tempo ne usci fuori una lingua nuova, la quale ritenne alcun odore e dell'una e delle altre Uguale Opinione tennero altri oracoli del cinquecento, lo Speroni ed il Muzio ne se ne scosto troppo il Varchi, il quale, come e noto, scriveva che dai mali portati all'italia dai barbari nacquero due beni, la lingua volgare e la citta di Venezia. Il Muzio, anzi, ando piu oltre ancora, ed usci III quella singolare Opinione, che avendo i Romani piu che gli altri uomini d'italia ritenuto del latino, ed i popoli settentrionali d'i talia piu del barbaro, accadde che ai Toscani posti tra gli uni e gli altri sia tra questi due estremi venuta fatta una mescolanza tale, quale ella si vede piu che al trove bella e leggiadra. Ne fu solo il secolo XVI a credere derivata la lingua ita liana dalla corruzione che i popoli germanici imposero, quasi diremmo, al latino; che anzi tale ipotesi si e riprodotta ai tempi moderni, e di essa sonosi fatti propugna tori parecchi scrittori, tra' quali ci bastera di citare il Lewis, lo Schlegel e Max Midler. Il quale ultimo, a cui nessuno puo ricusare autorita somma nel campo filo logico, si argomenta di provare che le lingue romane non sono altro che il latino modificato dai popoli germanici, e rappresentano, non gia il latino quale sarebbe andato sviluppandosi secondo le proprie leggi naturali, ma quale invece se lo ap propriarono le genti alemanne; o, in altre parole, il latino passato dalle bocche romane alle bocche tedesche.
