Download or read book From the Susquehanna to the Tiber written by Jeremy Christiansen and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremy Christiansen offers an intimate account of life as a faithful—sometimes stumbling—member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Growing up in a small Mormon town, he served as a Mormon missionary for two years in Argentina, raised a young family in the Mormon Church, and served in Mormon leadership positions. But as he grew older, he became unsettled about the principles of his faith, setting him on a long search for God and for truth that would ultimately lead to the Roman Catholic Church. Based on detailed personal journals, this vivid book explores the highly unique approach to religious epistemology found in Mormonism. Although the faith theoretically encourages the use of reason, Mormons' beliefs, in practice, are rooted chiefly in emotion. Christiansen offers singular insight into life within this system—with all its beauties and its limits. Thanks to the subtle workings of Providence, Christiansen discovered Catholicism through the ancient writings of the Church Fathers, who revealed a robust Christian intellectual tradition, and through the mystical glory of her liturgy.

Download or read book Mormonia written by Jeff Von Ward and published by Jeff Von Ward. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About Mormonia You've never met anyone quite like the Bowler family before-or are they the Wrights or the Christensens? Von Ward's seven short stories introduce us to three generations of a large and disparate family of Mormons, indelible characters whose ideas and expectations are frequently upended; but always with a knowing-eye, a tenderness and real affection. Praise for Mormonia "These stories are absolutely gorgeous. Von Ward's writing is lyrical and graceful, finely wrought. This book is absolutely deserving of a wide audience." "We greet each reappearance of a character as we would an old friend, and while the customs and traditions detailed are new to anyone outside the Mormon faith, we are swept up in them as if we've practiced all our lives. When we depart these characters' world, what remains with us is not their cultural oddities, but their aching humanity." "I was captivated... the author and I are fellow travelers, having both spent more time than we could afford living in Mormonland." "Von Ward's stories move interestingly through time, and manage to take in something of an epic sweep. The scenes are compelling and surprising." About the Author Jeff Von Ward is the author of Mormonia: Stories, managing editor of Samizdat Literary Journal, and co-creator of the Writing without Walls reading series. He also edits the popular City Lights podcast series, Live! From City Lights. He is a recent graduate of the M.F.A. in Writing program at California College of the Arts. He is currently hard at work finishing his first novel. (c) 2012, Wooden Horse Publications. All Rights Reserved.

Download or read book I m Glad My Mom Died written by Jennette McCurdy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER * MORE THAN 2 MILLION COPIES SOLD! A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

Those three words landed my job at the Seattle Fortune 1000 company. Within minutes on my first interview the sales manager asked me, "What do you think about cold calling?" Waiting for him to wipe the surprised look off his face I added, "But I'm one of the best you'll ever see doing it." Download or read book Witchcraft as a Social Diagnosis written by Roxane Richter and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary manuscript examines one nonprofit’s five years of medical outreach in the condemned witches village of Gnani in Ghana, focusing on the clashes between traditional Ghanaian beliefs, African religious tenets, and contemporary Western medical science. The research draws upon 1,714 patient interventions and 95 personal interviews, exposing the inherent challenges of separating indigenous beliefs surrounding fate and witchcraft convictions from contemporary interpretations of biological pathogens, structural and gender-based violence, and evidence-based medicine. This book offers a novel perspective on witchcraft as it examines questions of stigmatization in order to extrapolate how disease, injury, and illness relate to social condition and the dialogue surrounding witchcraft. These unprecedented insights will serve to uncover and explore rural Ghanaian challenges in gender-based violence, religion, legal and political tenets, human rights, and medical science and their many implications for those in search of health parity, social justice, gender equity, and human rights.
