Book The Morganza 1967

Download or read book The Morganza 1967 written by David E. Stuart and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2011-10-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresh out of college, David Stuart put off graduate school to take a job close to his West Virginia home as a counselor at the Youth Development Center at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Known locally as the Morganza, the facility was founded in the nineteenth century as a farm for orphaned boys. By the 1960s, the Morganza had long been burdened with a sinister reputation when it was converted into a detention center for Allegheny County youth convicted of crimes ranging from petty theft to armed robbery, rape, and murder. Reporting for duty during the racially turbulent and riot-torn summer of 1967, Stuart describes the life of students and staff in what was, in reality, a youth prison camp. Confronted with the glaring shortcomings of the reform school's methods of rehabilitation, Stuart irritated the bureaucracy, advocating for detainees whose only crimes were a lack of education and belonging to the wrong race or economic class. He confronted an establishment that refused to distinguish between hardened criminals and those who would benefit from actual reform. In The Morganza, 1967 Stuart offers a brutally honest--at times touching--insider's view of a juvenile justice system that was badly in need of fixing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Vietnam was a turbulent time in our nation’s history that stirred strong feelings and deep emotions as America changed in ways that could not have been anticipated or avoided. To Vietnam and Back is an intimate family memoir that, through a lifeline of letters, offers a unique and warmly told story about one soldier’s year in Vietnam and one family anxiously awaiting his return. Readers will take a step back in time to a pivotal period of the Vietnam War, 1967-1968, and glimpse what it was like to not only leave home for the uncertainty of an increasingly controversial conflict, but also to be the parents, siblings and friends left at home to provide support the only way they knew how... through heartfelt words of everyday life. The pages are filled with emotion, humor, family and neighborhood news, while also depicting the uncertainty, fear and division caused by the war in Vietnam. It is a year of back and forth letters that brought encouragement and hope to the writers and recipients of those letters. In essence, To Vietnam and Back is a journey of the written kind that revisits and illustrates the timeless value of family, friends, faith and love.

Book excerpt: “Dave Moore's work on this collection is simply awesome.... It should become and remain the definitive reference book for Beat scholars forever.” —Carolyn Cassady Neal Cassady is best remembered today as Jack Kerouac’s muse and the basis for the character “Dean Moriarty” in Kerouac’s classic On The Road, and as one of Ken Kesey’s merriest of Merry Pranksters, the driver of the psychedelic bus “Further,” immortalized in Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. This collection brings together more than two hundred letters to Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, John Clellon Holmes, and other Beat generation luminaries, as well as correspondence between Neal and his wife, Carolyn. These amazing letters cover Cassady’s life between the ages of 18 and 41 and finish just months before his death in February 1968. Brilliantly edited by Dave Moore, this unique collection presents the “Soul of the Beat Generation” in his own words—sometimes touching and tender, sometimes bawdy and hilarious. Here is the real Neal Cassady—raw and uncut.

Echoing with the wonder of the vast wilderness of northern Alberta, this collection of short stories uses human relationships with nature to powerfully evoke our most deeply held and tender feelings. A man starts his truck in the frigid dark of a northern morning, lonely for his estranged children but feeling connected to them through the stars. A young woman, newly transplanted to High Prairie, receives shocking news about her absent boyfriend while watching the morning news. A city-dwelling woman goes on an epic journey to find her long-lost brother, finding herself navigating the muskeg in more ways than she could have ever anticipated. A must-read for lovers of Canadiana and all northern hearts, Tales from Alberta Muskeg Country tells stories that are at once recognizable and unique, comforting and disconcerting, joyous and full of grief. Above all, these are tales of survival in the harshest of emotional wilderness.

This body of work is just a portion of daily devotions I wrote for a radio program I had for years called TimeOut for Women.
