Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique civilian's eye-view of World War I, depicting, through heartfelt letters from an American woman, a fascinating before and after picture of a French community in disarray What looked impossible is evidently coming to pass . . . I silently returned to my garden and sat down. War again! This time war was close by—not war about which one can read, as one reads it in the newspapers, as you will read it in the States, far away from it, but war right here—if the Germans can cross the frontier. A Hilltop on the Marne is a collection of letters written by Mildred Aldrich, an American expatriate who had bought a country farmhouse near Paris in the spring of 1914. Writing to her friends back home, she describes her idyllic life in Huiry, the minutiae of her farmhouse and her daily life. Ignoring the panicked pleadings of friends that she return to the U.S. As the political situation in Europe darkens, Aldrich stands firm in her decision to stay in France and her village, come what may. As war breaks out she looks out over Marne valley at the armies moving, hears the cannonade in the distance and watches as soldiers of all nations march down the lanes in turn. Aldrich's narrative goes on to describe the subsequent events of the war until America's entry into the fray and, returning to her narrative after the war, she described the process of rebuilding local life.

Book On this Hilltop

Download or read book On this Hilltop written by Sue Hubbell and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am a beekeeper, but I am also a writer, and some years ago I sat down at a typewriter to experiment with words, to try to tease out of the amorphous, chaotic and worldess part of myself the reason why I was staying on this hilltop in the Ozarks." Why indeed? For Sue Hubbell, a former college librarian who moved to the country, found she spent much of her time digging manure out of the barn or trying to fix the rear end of the truck -- that is, in addition to the hay making, corn planting, bee swarming, vegetable gardening, tick picking, log splitting, chick hatching, truck towing, and snake alerts that overwhelmed her early days in her new home. These essays from down on her Missouri farm are alight with mischief, poking gentle fun at city snobs, Ozark men, and Hubbell's own experience as an apprentice Ozarker. They also chart the first forays Hubbell made into writing. As she says herself, "They were the beginning of a writing life. One of several I have lived." "A beautifully blossoming writer . . . Hubbell watches language as sagaciously as she eyes nature." -- Washington Post Book World

HELL ON A HILL TOP Instead of backing away from the fight, the North Vietnamese mortar, recoilless rifle, heavy machine gun, sapper and regular infantry attacks increased. The last offensive around Ripcord was starting to look like the last stand. Unwilling to keep American soldiers at high risk at this stage of the war; Ripcord was evacuated on 23 July. The battle went unnoticed for 30 years until Keith Nolan's book, RIPCORD, was published. As powerful and gripping as was the story of great leadership and courageous fighting by our soldiers, the magnitude of the enemy force still remained unknown. The author, the 3rd Brigade commander during the siege and evacuation, made trips to Vietnam in 2001 and 2004 and interviewed the 324B Division Commander whose first-ever division sole mission, was to destroy Firebase Ripcord. Download or read book Hilltop Hoods The Calling written by Dianne Rodger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the Hip-Hop album The Calling (2003) by the Hilltop Hoods was a major event on the timeline of Hip-Hop in Australia. It launched a formerly 'underground' scene into the spotlight, radically transforming the group members' lives and creating new opportunities for other Hip-Hop artists. This book analyses the impact of the album by drawing on original interviews with fifteen Hip-Hop practitioners from across Australia, including artists who contributed to the album. These primary interviews are interwoven with material from media sources and close readings of song lyrics and album imagery. An exploration of the early histories of Hip-Hop in Australia with a focus on the formation of Obese Records and the Hilltop Hoods' biography gives way to analysis of specific tracks from the album and the Hoods' prowess as live performers. The book uses The Calling as a lens to examine the beliefs and practices of Hip-Hop enthusiasts in Australia, including changes since the album was released. Published in 2023 to coincide with the album's twenty-year anniversary, the book is an engaging evaluation of a musical release that was so significant that people now use it explain two distinct periods in Australian Hip-Hop (pre or post The Calling).

Book excerpt: By the time America decided to engage in Vietnam, the Soviets had already overwhelmed fifteen nations by force and fear. The conflict that followed was one of American history's toughest infantry wars. American soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War call it "the Nam." In this unique recollection of deadly, close-quarters infantry combat, author and twenty-year US Army veteran Donald R. White shares his wealth of personal experience, presenting an emotional trip through violence and bloodshed. In the time period between late fall of 1965 and late summer of 1969, hundreds of men were killed in action each week-something that survivors live with daily. Former US Army platoon sergeant Donald R. White reveals detailed facts about infantry war that are bloody, horrific, and shocking. In this personal account, he deals with memories that are seldom happy and often grim, giving readers an eye-witness account of what the Nam was really like for American fighting men.
