Book Hypernuclear Physics with the pi K Reaction

Book excerpt: The study of hypernuclei affords unique insights into the nature of hadronic forces beyond those obtainable from ordinary nuclear physics research. A hypernucleus consists of one or more hyperons bound to a nuclear core. In the SU(3) classification, [Lambda], [Sigma], and [Xi] hyperons occupy the same octet representation of spin-parity /1/2/ baryons as the neutron and proton, the familiar constituents of ordinary nuclei. The [Lambda] and [Sigma] possess strangeness S = -1 and isotopic spin I = 0, 1, respectively, while the /Xi/ has S = /minus/2, I = /1/2/. In the underlying quark picture, the [Lambda] and /Sigma/ have the flavor structure s(ud)/sub I=0, 1/, compared to the combination uud for the proton. The strange quark, s, carries the strangeness quantum number S = /minus/1, which makes it distinguishable from the S = 0 u and d quarks. The lowest-lying hyperon is the /Lambda/, with a mass of 1,115.6 MeV/c2, some 177 MeV/c2 heavier than the proton. The study of the behavior of a hyperon embedded in the nuclear medium, through the theoretical analysis of level spectra, sheds light on the nature of the hyperon-nucleon (YN) effective interaction, i.e. on the role of the strange quark in strong interactions. This paper investigates the ([pi], K/sup +/) reactions that produce hypernuclei. 32 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.

Book Structure of Light Lambda hypernuclei and the K Pi Reaction

Download or read book Structure of Light Lambda hypernuclei and the K Pi Reaction written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief description of the procedure and highlights of the calculations performed on a broad range of p-shell nuclei including .lambda.9Be, .lambda.12C, .lambda.13C, .lambda.14N and .lambda.16O for which data exist and .lambda.1°B, .lambda.14C, .lambda.15N for which data do not exist are given. The mechanism for the (K−, .pi.−) reaction which generates the rich excitation spectra seen experimentally is briefly considered. The use of a relativistic DWBA formalism includes naturally the distortion in K−, .pi.− wave functions and permits quantitatively reliable estiamtes of reaction cross-sections to be made. An essentially complete treatment of second-half p-shell nuclei with fixed .lambda. N and NN potentials is possible because of the small size variations of these nuclei. In principle at least a three body .lambda. NN force should be present, inducing an apparent nucleon-number dependence in an effective two body interaction. The emphasis is on extraction, from the hypernuclear spectrum and excitation probabilities, of details of the .lambda. N interaction not otherwise obtainable experimentally. (WHK).

Book Hypernuclear Physics Programs Via Electroproduction in Hall C at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Hypernuclear Physics Programs Via Electroproduction in Hall C at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypernuclei with strangeness -1 have been intensively studied both theoretically and experimentally using hadronic probes and reactions, (K, [pi]) and ([pi], K), for many years since the first discovery of such formation in the earlier nuclear emulsion and bubble chamber experiments. Many recent review papers exist on the status of hypernuclear physics, such as the recent one written by B.F. Gibson and Ed V. Hungerford in which one can find detailed discussion on all aspects of hypernuclear physics and more complete reference list. The unique feature of this field can be summarized, in general, into three categories: (1) Strong Interaction Involving Strangeness, (2) Weak Interaction with [Delta]S = -1, and (3) Medium Modifications. For strong interaction, it is commonly believed that a hyperon can be treated as an ''impurity'' to probe deep interior of the nuclear medium to explore fundamental issues such as the changes in size and shape due to the short range feature of YN interactions, limit of conventional nuclear model (shell or cluster) in solving for many body systems with new degree of freedom, spin dependent forces (spin-spin, spin-orbital, tensor), new symmetry and explicit QCD effect in nuclear media. Many of such issues are impossible or very difficult to be studied in the ordinary nuclear physics. The keys for success in this part of field includes good energy resolution and wide ranged spectroscopy. Until now, many important issues are still unresolved or remained to be resolved in more consistent and satisfactory fashion, such as spin dependent forces. This is due to luck of high quality experimental facilities. Recent experiments at KEK using ([pi], K) reaction with a dedicated new SKS spectrometer have demonstrated the importance of improving the energy resolution. New structures were found as resolution improved only from 3 MeV to 2 MeV.

Book Properties And Interactions Of Hyperons Proceedings Of U s japan Seminar

Download or read book Properties And Interactions Of Hyperons Proceedings Of U s japan Seminar written by Peter D Barnes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-08-31 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminar focusses on the key issues addressed in measuring the hyperon-nucleon strong and weak interaction observables and in modelling the hyperon-nucleon interaction. Both quark and baryon pictures are addressed. Results from recent experiments at BNL, KEK, CERN and FNAL, including hyperon production, polarization and decay, are explored; both S = -1 and S = -2 systems are included. The status of our understanding of hyperon weak decays in the nuclear medium is examined and the constraints placed upon our modelling of the hyperon-nucleon interaction by our knowledge of hypernuclear properties are also investigated. Finally, the present status of, as well as future prospects for, the measurements of the hyperon-nucleon interaction are summarized.
