Book Maco Micro Studies of Hydrogen Embrittlement Mechanisms in Titanium and Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Maco Micro Studies of Hydrogen Embrittlement Mechanisms in Titanium and Aluminum Alloys written by W. W. Gerberich and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systematic studies of environmental effects on fracture in two alpha/beta titanium alloys, one beta titanium alloy and 7475 aluminum alloys have been accomplished. Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn has been tested for its hydrogen-induced cracking behavior under sustained loads. The influence of frequency and microstructure on fatigue crack growth have also been studied. Fatigue crack growth in Ti-5A1-4Mo, as a function of hydrogen content, temperature and Widmanstatten colony size, was then studied. Mechanical data have been obtained along with TEM and SEM characterizations. Modelling for fatigue thresholds has been attempted to explain dislocation, microstructure and hydrogen effects. Ti-30 Mo has been studied for effects of hydrogen on dislocation dynamics, cleavage fracture stress and fatigue crack propagation. Fractography (SEM) has been used to characterize the fracturing processes and modeling attempted to explain the hydrogen effects. Hydrogen effects in aluminum alloys are not as obvious as those in titanium alloys. Both cathodic and gas-phase charging did not significantly increase the hydrogen content of this material. Mechanical properties did not seem to change decisively after hydrogen charging. But the lack of a macroscopic effect does not preclude a hydrogen mechanism in environmentally assisted events. Book Stress Induced Hydrogen Concentration in Titanium

Download or read book Stress Induced Hydrogen Concentration in Titanium written by Philip N. Adler and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes in hydrogen concentration that accompany application of a stress-gradient were characterized in titanium alloys so that the influence of stress on hydrogen embrittlement can be understood. In situ measurement of hydrogen was made useing the nuclear microprobe for hydrogen (NMH). A nondestructive depth-profiling technique that utilizes the IH(7Li, gamma)8Be resonant nuclear reaction. Stress gradients were applied by four-point bending. Single phase alloys of beta-Ti and alpha-Ti, as well as different alpha/beta morphologies of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, were examined. Hydrogen redistribution was observed in all the beta-phase alloys under an elastic stress gradient, but no further change accompanied plastic deformation. The extent of hydrogen change in high-purity alloys was approximately two times greater than in commercial alloys. Based on this difference and measurements of the partial molal volume of hydrogen in selected alloys, it was concluded that a portion of hydrogen in the commercial alloys was not available for redistribution and was, therefore, trapped. Factors such as hydrogen content, oxygen content, and cold working were not found to change the extent of hydrogen trapping. The practical significance of trapping lies in its possible use to reduce the deleterious influence of hydrogen. The diffusion coefficient in these alloys was also determined under both elastic and plastic loadings and was found to be relatively uniform, approximately 1 time 10 to the minus 6 sq cm. per s, and consistent with those previously reported for beta-Ti.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors were motivated to prepare this book by the absence of any recent comprehensive book on titanium. The intent of this book is to provide a modern compendium that addresses both the phyical metallurgy as well as the applications of titanium. Until now the only book on this subject is that by Zwicker which was written in German and published almost 30 years ago. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the subject including some historical aspects of titanium. Chapter 2 is a s- mary of the Fundamental Aspects of Titanium, Chapter 3 is a summary of the Technological Aspects of Titanium and Chapters 4 through 9 address the specifics of the various classes of titanium ranging from CP Titanium to Titanium Matrix Composites. Finally, Chapter 10 covers “special” properties and applications of titanium. Our intent has been to address the subject conceptually rather than provide quantities of data of the sort that would be found in a Handbook. It is our intent that this book is useful for materials scientists and engineers interested in using titanium and for students either as a sourcebook or as a textbook. We have - tempted to include a representative set of references which provide additional detail for readers interested in specific aspects of titanium. Because of the re- tively recent growth of the technological importance of titanium, there is a vo- minous literature on titanium. While our references span this literature it has proven impossible to mention every contribution.

Book Handbook of Structural Life Assessment

Download or read book Handbook of Structural Life Assessment written by Raouf A. Ibrahim and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 1016 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, self-contained reference deals with structural life assessment (SLA) and structural health monitoring (SHM) in a combined form. SLA periodically evaluates the state and condition of a structural system and provides recommendations for possible maintenance actions or the end of structural service life. It is a diversified field and relies on the theories of fracture mechanics, fatigue damage process, and reliability theory. For common structures, their life assessment is not only governed by the theory of fracture mechanics and fatigue damage process, but by other factors such as corrosion, grounding, and sudden collision. On the other hand, SHM deals with the detection, prediction, and location of crack development online. Both SLA and SHM are combined in a unified and coherent treatment.
