Ces formations renferment des ressources en eau souterraine qui constitue la seule source en eau potable de certaines populations. Cependant, le quart des forages réalisés en vue d'exploiter ces eaux sont négatifs. Une bonne compréhension du fonctionnement hydrogéologique et hydrodynamique des aquifères de socle qui sont très hétérogènes peut aider à résoudre ce problème. L'objectif de la thèse est de proposer un modèle conceptuel hydrogéologique en milieu de socle fracturé soudano-sahélien en combinant différentes méthodes hydrogéophysiques et hydrogéologiques classiques. Le site expérimental de Sanon (environ 14 km2) a été choisi comme site d'étude en raison de sa géologie qui est représentative de certaines formations de socle de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. Les résultats indiquent que le profil d'altération de Sanon est cohérent avec d'autres modèles proposés ces dernières années, suggérant que la conductivité hydraulique des aquifères de socle est une conséquence des processus d'altération plutôt que de la fracturation tectonique. Concernant les propriétés hydrodynamiques, une corrélation linéaire positive d'environ 80% a été obtenue entre les transmissivités et les paramètres RMP. La présence d'un dôme piézométrique dans la vallée centrale a été observée en toute saison. La recharge se fait directement au niveau de ce dôme piézométrique (11 et 13% de la pluie annuelle) et l'alimentation des zones périphériques se ferait plutôt par des transferts latéraux. L'ensemble des informations géologiques et hydrogéologiques a permis de faire une simulation numérique qui reproduit l'écoulement observé.

We propose in this study a computational approach in order to characterize the physical structure of aquifers and the corresponding hydraulic properties. We focus on heterogeneous fractured media where flow is highly channeled. We first investigate the fracturing properties two Swedish sites by defining the corresponding DFN model. Hydraulic properties of heterogeneous porous and fractured media are then described by two channeling indicators based on statistical properties of flow. Finally, we develop a strategy to identify the position and the transmissivity of main flow channels from head data by solving the corresponding inverse problem. We show that this identification is possible provided that 1- data are remotely sensitive to the main structures underlying flow channels, 2- the parameterization focus on these structures and 3- the strategy is carefully set up.

An example is the road from Digne to Nice in the south of France, with an impressive number and variety of such structures: the road for the most part, goes through narrow valleys with fast running streams penetrating the rock faces; erosion is favored by the Mediterranean climate, so that rocks are barely covered by meager vegetation. In this inhospitable and sterile landscape, the visitor can im mediately discover innumerable fractures in great masses which have been distorted by slow, yet powerful movements. This phenomenon can be seen for about 100 kilometers; all kinds of shapes and combinations are repre sented and can be observed either in the mountain itself or in the man-made cliffs and excavations, resulting from improvements made to the road. In the same region, close to the Turini Pass, a real large scale hydrody namic experiment is taking place -a source which is situated on the flank on the mountain, has been equiped with a tap; if the tap is open, water flows through the tap only, but when it is closed, then the side of the mountain releases water in a matter of seconds. Other outlets are also influenced by this tap, such as a water basin situated a few hundred meters away.

Hydraulically, these media are characterized by short reaction times, due to the fractures, and long reaction times, due to the rock. These media are important for several topics as contaminated sites, element storage and resources exploitation. The main challenge of fracture porous media modeling is the representation of the geometrical and physical heterogeneities. As an exact representation of the medium is not possible, it is necessary to determine the key properties of the medium. This study aims at determining the impact of the geometrical and physical properties of the fractures and the matrix from the local to the global scales. A first part consists in creating methods to evaluate structure effects on the exchange between the fractures and the matrix and a second part consists in using these methods on several media. Finally, we describe a new discrete dual-porosity model taking into account the properties of the media characterizing its behavior.

Book excerpt: Dans le cadre du projet de cartographie hydrogéologique des aquifères fracturés des basses-terres du St-Laurent du sud-ouest du Québec (AFSOQ), la caractérisation in situ des milieux fracturés a été effectuée à l'aide de diagraphies géophysiques. L'analyse et l'interprétation de ces diagraphies géophysiques ont permis de lever les indéterminations lithologiques qui existaient dans les puits non échantillonnés. Les contacts lithoiogiques ont bien été identifiés entre les formations de compositions minéralogiques différentes. En outre, des corrélations lithologiques entre les puits à l'échelle régionale basées sur les mesures du rayonnement gamma naturel et de la résistivité électrique ont été possibles. Les discontinuités telles les fractures qui ont été identifiées dans les puits à l'aide des outils diagraphiques d'imagerie acoustique et optique peuvent l'être également à l'aide de la combinaison des diagraphies conventionnelles et acoustiques. Les familles de fractures identifiées et caractérisées dans les puits et celles décrites directement en surface sont semblables malgré des méthodes d'auscultation différentes. Les diagraphies géophysiques ont aussi permis de mettre en évidence les fractures perméables dans la plupart des puits sondés, Ces outils de caractérisation in situ des milieux fracturés devraient être davantage utilisés lors des études hydrogéologiques.
