Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent test programs indicate that theoretical streamlines above a supercavitating hydrofoil may be considerably higher than those actually generated. To check theoretical predictions a three-dimensional traversing probe was constructed and used to map the upper cavity surfaces generated by two different two-dimensional hydrofoils. Experimental contours were found to fall below those predicted by theory at all angles of attack and depths of submergence tested. The rate of change of cavity ordinates with changes in angle of attack or depth of submergence is about the same as that predicted by theory. The contribution of angle of attack to cavity shape is responsible for the greater part of the difference between theoretical and measured cavity shapes. (Author).

Book excerpt: In order to explore the fundamental nature of hydrofoil flutter, a hydroelastic instability which is a potential cause of structural failure of lifting surfaces operating at high speeds in water, a series of hydrofoil models was tested in a towing basin. Flutter data were obtained from four surface-piercing hydrofoil strut models with various pod and foil configurations. Flutter occurred in two independent hydroelastic modes having predominantly first bending and first torsion mode shapes, respectively. The unstable modes were found to exist simultaneously in at least one strut. Flutter inception speed of the bending flutter mode was affected by strut submergence and the presence or absence of a foil. Flutter inception speed of the torsional flutter mode was dependent on strut cavitation pattern, strut submergence, pod moment of inertia, pod length, and the presence or absence of a foil. Book excerpt: The first- and second-order problems of steady cavity flows past lifting hydrofoils, based on single spiral vortex cavity termination models, are studied in detail. The general first- and second-order solutions are identical in form and, in general, can be expressed in terms of simple analytical functions. Numerical calculations have been carried out for flat-plate and circular-arc hydrofoils. Good agreement is found between the present results and previous nonlinear or high order calculations made by others. It is also found, to a good approximation, that second-order results for hydrofoils of arbitrary shapes and with long trailing cavities can generally be expressed in simple terms of linearized results.
