Book excerpt: What an entire army couldn’t do, two men must: take out the Butcher of Prague. Operation Anthropoid has been engaged. 1941. The Third Reich is at its zenith. Its protector is Reinhard Heydrich, the most merciless senior figure in Hitler’s inner circle, and the Fuhrer’s eventual successor. Under Heydrich’s oppressive command, thousands of lives have already been erased in Czechoslovakia’s capital. It’s only Heydrich’s first ruthless step in service to the German people. Heydrich’s ultimate endgame is the Final Solution. But under the cloak of night, the resistance conspires as well. Trained in subterfuge by the British Special Operations, Josef Gabcik and Jan Kubis are unfailingly dedicated soldiers. Now, as committed allied agents they’ve been tasked with an audacious and seemingly impossible mission: parachute into an occupied city in lockdown, rally the remaining Czech rebels, and assassinate one of the most dangerous men alive. Outmanned against insurmountable odds, Gabcik and Kubis have no choice but to succeed. The fate of Europe and the world is in their hands. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Stephan Talty’s acclaimed fiction debut, Black Irish, won him comparisons to such thriller masters as Jo Nesbø, Karin Slaughter, and Tana French. Now, this chilling novel brings back intrepid heroine Absalom Kearney, a driven police detective with a haunted past, trying to make a difference in a troubled town. “A brilliant thriller series.”—Tess Gerritsen Hangman, Hangman, what do you see? Four little girls, as cute as can be. The eerie schoolyard chant still sends ripples of horror through North Buffalo. Not so long ago, serial killer Marcus Flynn preyed upon the community’s teenaged daughters—until he was cornered and shot in the head. But Flynn lived, carrying to prison the nickname “Hangman,” along with the secret of his last victim’s fate. Homicide cop Abbie Kearney wasn’t around during Hangman’s reign of terror. She hadn’t yet come home to wear her dad’s old badge in the tough Irish American stronghold known as “the County.” Abbie had never experienced firsthand the horror of Hangman. Until now. Hangman, Hangman, where do they go? Down on the ground, where the daffodils grow. A corrections officer lies dead, a prison van stands empty . . . and somewhere out there, the monster who condemned innocents to death at the end of a rope watches and waits to strike again. Abbie leads a desperate manhunt through a city driven to its knees by fear, matching wits with a predator as brilliant as he is elusive. But as more victims are claimed, a rising tide of secrecy, paranoia, and politics forces her to realize that stepping beyond the law may be the only way to find justice. Because with each passing hour, the stakes grow higher—and Hangman’s noose gets tighter.

Book excerpt: Our families love of hunting, fishing, and the outdoors brought countless hours of interaction with my boys, my brother, and my friends that created treasured memories. I always wanted to publish one of the many "Jimmy and his Dad" stories I wrote which are based upon real life experiences with my boys. I selected the Ghost of Hangman's Hollow because it was the first one I wrote and always brought a smile to my face. It is a story of an elusive turkey we hunted in a small patch of woods we call Hangman's hollow. In the story, we learn there is more to hunting than harvesting the animal. We learn to enjoy the day, the people we are with, and all mother nature has to offer. Most of all we learn to have fun no matter what the outcome of the hunt is.

Book excerpt: In 1827 the Duke of Wellington – former Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and British Prime Minister – ordered the withdrawal of British soldiers from the island of Ceylon after years of bloody conflict there. English cargo vessels, including the unarmed English Quaker ship Morning Star, were despatched to sail to Colombo to repatriate wounded British soldiers and a cargo of sealed crates containing captured treasure. By January 1828 , Morning Star was anchored at Table Bay, Cape Town, before joining an armed British convoy of East Indiamen, heading north. Heavily-laden, she struggled to keep up with the ships ahead. The notorious pirate Benito de Soto was the master of a heavily-armed pirate ship, lying in wait off Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic to pick-off stragglers from passing convoys. Morning Star was easily overhauled by the pirate and stopped with cannon fire. Her captain and officers were executed and the attackers fled to Spain with cargo stolen from the stricken ship. Later de Soto buried the treasure and travelled to British-ruled Gibraltar with forged identity documents to sell the spoils. The authorities, however, discovered his identity and he was arrested. Despite the absence of eye-witness evidence that he was the pirate captain, he was convicted of piracy before a British judge and jury and hanged at Gibraltar in early 1830. It is clear that proof of de Soto’s guilt in court was lacking, but astonishingly, when renovations were being carried out at de Soto’s former home village in Galicia, Spain, in 1926, much of the treasures he had plundered from Morning Star were found buried in the grounds there. Almost 100 years later, British justice administered in London and Gibraltar was vindicated

Intrepid photographer Sarah Bain and her motley crew of friends are back to hunt criminals in the dark, seedy underbelly of Victorian London, but little do they know, the darkness may lurk closer than they first divined. Photographer Sarah Bain and her friends Lord Hugh Staunton and sometime street urchin Mick O’Reilly are private detectives with a new gig—photographing crime scenes for London’s Daily World newspaper. The Daily World is the latest business venture of their sole client, Sir Gerald Mariner, a fabulously wealthy and powerful banker. One cold, snowy January morning, Sarah, Hugh, and Mick are summoned to the goriest crime scene they’ve ever encountered. A pub owner named Harry Warbrick has been found hanged and decapitated amid evidence of foul play. His murder becomes a sensation because he was England’s top hangman and he’s met the same fate that he inflicted on hundreds of criminals. Sir Gerald announces that the Daily World—meaning Sarah and her friends—will investigate and solve Harry Warbrick’s murder before the police do. The contest pits Sarah against the man she loves, Police Constable Barrett. She and her friends discover a connection between Harry Warbrick’s murder and the most notorious criminal he ever executed—Amelia Carlisle, the “Baby-Butcher,” who murdered hundreds of infants placed in her care. Something happened at Amelia’s execution. The Official Secrets Act forbids the seven witnesses present to divulge any information about it. But Harry had a bad habit of leaking tips to the press. Sarah and her friends suspect that one of the other witnesses killed Harry to prevent him from revealing a secret related to the execution. What is the secret, and who hanged the hangman?

Book excerpt: PONSON DU TERRAIL'S COMPLETE ROCAMBOLE SAGA IN NEW, UNABRIDGED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS ROCAMBOLE 9 – ROCAMBOLE AND THE HANGMAN'S ROPE (La Corde du pendu) Rocambole, reunited with his followers in London, is plotting to free William from the Bedlam mental hospital. William’s fortune was stolen by Sir Archibald, who then sent William to Bedlam. The mental hospital’s director however has a fixation for the “hangman’s rope”, and he will do everything to obtain it. Rocambole takes advantage of his obsession to achieve his own ends. Unfortunately this series was left unfinished by the untimely death of Ponson du Terrail in 1871 aged only 41. This volume includes new unabridged English translations of the original French texts: “La Corde du pendu - Tome I” “La Corde du pendu - Tome II” Text translation and layout, artwork, introductory notes, author’s biography, synopses and chronology: © 2023 Roland Radaelli and IP Rights Ltd THE COMPLETE SAGA IN NEW UNABRIDGED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS The Rocambole Saga The Rocambole adventures were first published in instalments in various French feuilletons, as supplements to newspapers. This was an extremely popular format in 19th Century France as well as in other countries. Novels such as Dumas’ “The Count of Montecristo”, Sue’s “The Mysteries of Paris” and Feval’s “Le Bossu” (“The Hunchback”) were first published in instalments and later reprinted as books. From 1857 to 1870, the year before the author’s death, Ponson du Terrail wrote thousands of pages chronicling Rocambole’s adventures, first as a master criminal, then as a defender of justice. The novels also offer an eye-opening account on how society was structured in 19th century France with stark divisions between nobility, rich businessmen and the working classes. Far from being outdated, these novels feel as fresh today as when they were written over 150 years ago. About the Author Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail was born in France in 1829. From 1850 he started writing serials for several newspapers and in 20 years will write over 200 novels! In 1857 he created the character of Rocambole, which will go on to achieve great success all over the world. The word “rocambolesque” is still used nowadays in many languages to describe fantastic, incredible adventures and scheming plots. With Germany’s invasion of France in 1870, Ponson du Terrail joins the resistance but a sudden illness strikes him and he dies in January 1871. The ROCAMBOLE SAGA in our catalogue includes the following ebooks: Series 1 - Legacy of Blood Series 2 - Knaves of Hearts Series 3 - Adventures of Rocambole Series 4 - Rocambole's Redemption Series 5 - Rocambole's Resurrection Series 6 - Rocambole's Last Word Series 7 - Rocambole in London Series 8 - Rocambole in Prison Series 9 - Rocambole and the Hangman's Rope
