This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Geography in Western Europe: A Study in Appreciation This book contains a selection of the contents of lectures and discussions in a class in Human Geography at Aberystwyth during the last ten years. In such work as this every limitation of the writer inevitably makes itself felt, and yet, as it is of the nature of an appreciation rather than of a professedly complete study, the personal note is a necessity. It may be said to be an early draft of an attempt to appreciate the genius loci of some of the human groups which have become accustomed to live and act as such in Western Europe. It tries to visualise those groups with their varied racial elements making their several contributions within each, while the group as a whole in turn makes its cumulative contribution to what may become a community of civilisation. The effort is therefore made to study human experience in each region in concrete fashion, with attention directed continuously both to man and to his environment, and this, it is urged, is an essential task of the geographer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DICTIONARY OF HUMAN GEOGRAPHY ‘Even better than before, the Dictionary is an essential tool for all human geographers and over the years has provided an invaluable guide to the changing boundaries and content of the discipline. No-one can afford to be without this fifth edition.’ Linda McDowell, University of Oxford ‘From explanations of core concepts and central debates to lucid discussions of the theories driving contemporary research, this is the best conceptual map to the creative and critical thinking that characterises contemporary human geography. The fifth edition belongs on the bookshelf of all serious students.’ Gerard Toal, Virginia Tech ‘With an exceptional balance between breadth and depth, this is undoubtedly a timely and ground-breaking revision of the Dictionary. An outstanding accomplishment of the editors and contributors, and a comprehensive and essential reference for any student or scholar interested in human geography.’ Mei-Po Kwan, Ohio State University ‘I can’t imagine life without it. Definitive, detailed yet accessible: there’s still no single-volume reference work in the field to rival it.’ Noel Castree, University of Manchester The Dictionary of Human Geography represents the definitive guide to issues and ideas, methods and theories in human geography. Now in its fifth edition, this ground-breaking text has been comprehensively revised to reflect the changing nature and practice of human geography and its rapidly developing connections with other fields. The major entries not only describe the development of concepts, contributions and debates in human geography, but also advance them. Shorter, definitional entries allow quick reference and coverage of the wider subject area. Changes to the fifth edition include entries from many new contributors at the forefront of developments in the field, and over 300 key terms appearing for the first time. It features a new consolidated bibliography along with a detailed index and systematic cross-referencing of headwords. The Dictionary of Human Geography continues to be the one guidebook no student, instructor or researcher in the field can afford to be without.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Environment and Nation: Geographical Factors in the Cultural and Political History of Europe The author places above all other considerations the preservation of World Peace; so that he believes that all educators should keepever in mind the saying In times of Peace, make Peace secure. It is his belief that no one can properly understand the European Political Complex without knowing the fundamentals of the Cultural and topographic background. These interact, and it is precisely because the geographies omit the Culture and the histories omit the Topography that the writer ventures to hope that this book will find a useful place in the classes of both subjects. Needless to say, many books have been consulted and the chief of these are listed in the footnotes. But there are half a dozen which should be in the library of every student in this field, and I am glad to acknowledge my indebtedness to them here. All that we learn of the physical features of the Earth, its climates, plants, and animals, is of practical importance, because these things have helped to make the human race what it is - here adventurous and progressive, there indolent and backward.
