Book excerpt: From Accra and Algiers to Zanzibar and Zululand, Africans have wrested control of soccer from the hands of Europeans, and through the rise of different playing styles, the rituals of spectatorship, and the presence of magicians and healers, have turned soccer into a distinctively African activity. African Soccerscapes explores how Africans adopted soccer for their own reasons and on their own terms. Soccer was a rare form of “national culture” in postcolonial Africa, where stadiums and clubhouses became arenas in which Africans challenged colonial power and expressed a commitment to racial equality and self-determination. New nations staged matches as part of their independence celexadbrations and joined the world body, FIFA. The Confédération africaine de football democratized the global game through antiapartheid sanctions and increased the number of African teams in the World Cup finals. In this compact, highly readable book Alegi shows that the result of this success has been the departure of huge numbers of players to overseas clubs and the growing influence of private commercial interests on the African game. But the growth of women’s soccer and South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 World Cup also challenge the one-dimensional notion of Africa as a backward, “tribal” continent populated by victims of war, corruption, famine, and disease.

This book argues essentially that Cameroon cannot competently champion African unity and progress until it can correctly pursue its own multicultural nation-building. Cameroon's success continental-wise would depend on its theory and practice of multiculturalism, as particularly reflected in (1) the rejoicing in its historical diversity and the harmonious co-existence of its Systems of Education which must, of necessity, be linked to (2) effective federalization or decentralization of uniquely cultural matters. Critically examining history and education as components of culture, and therefore, of multiculturalism, the book makes some bold recommendations while demonstrating how nation-building is meaningless without the peoples authentic history. It argues that Cameroon national culture cannot be a national culture without embodying the distinct culture of the English-speaking minority. Anything else is nothing but deliberate confusion of assimilation for multiculturalism, a confusion that is heavily tied to the countrys phoney independence. Hinging on education (and its associates of bilingualism and bijuralism), the book demonstrates that Cameroons over-sung cultural dualism is a charade, epitomized by the 1998 Education Law. Rather than reaffirm Cameroons biculturalism as it superficially avows, Cameroons purported cultural dualism is really out to efface any semblance of cultural or educational dualism that may still be resisting assimilation. The continuous and persistent employment of terms such as biculturalism, bilingualism and bijuralism in legal texts in Cameroon is only to confuse the international community, especially from seeing exactly the kind of ethnic cleansing which is taking place in the country.

It might seem that a well-organized club with professional executives, a team of talented players and an experienced coach would be sufficient to win a match. However, a successful team also requires a powerful African 'big man' of specific ethnic affiliation, a considerable budget for 'motivation' (bribery) and the right kind of spiritual assistance (magic). But even then internal struggles within the club and team caused by corrupt executives, coach's players and godfathers, witchcraft and sorcery, and/or other factors such as spectator violence may mean that the team still loses. The book consist of seven chapters that correspond to the days of the week. During this week, Olympique de Buea is preparing for a match on Sunday. Each chapter is devoted to one theme: 'Monday' is about the different football leagues in Cameroon; 'Tuesday' deals with expenditures, club sponsorship and the role of the African big man; 'Wednesday' discusses tribalism in the football leagues and the teams; 'Thursday' explains aspects of bribery, nepotism and corruption; 'Friday' elaborates on the spiritual forces in football, particularly witchcraft and sorcery within the clubs; 'Saturday' focuses on match preparation and the role of spiritual advisers; and 'Sunday' discusses a match between Olympique de Buea and Bamboutos de Mbouda, and considers the role of ancestors, supporters and referees during football matches. He is rescued by Nigerian security forces and he enters the Republic of Niger. From there he enters Algeria and from Algeria they move on to Libya after losing a friend in the desert. He and his friend smuggle themselves into a merchant ship bound for Barcelona. They are identified and his friend is killed while he jumps into the sea in a desperate attempt to escape. Some of his companions are arrested and deported to Nigeria. The story criticizes the socio political situation in Africa and depicts many aspects of the African tradition. The man from Australia is your brother; the woman from Afghanistan is your sister; the man from Syria is your brother; the woman from America is your sister and the man from Africa is your brother too.
