Book Houseboat Days in China Classic Reprint

Download or read book Houseboat Days in China Classic Reprint written by J. O. P. Bland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Houseboat Days in China Imprimis, however, a word to the enlightened reader, the Old resident (bless his querulous ways I), who, rightly enough, asks to be informed of your book's raison d'étre. A' record of Idle ness, my dear Sir, trivial things set down in garrulous mood and chiefly for the delectation (if so it may be) of fellow-idlers. Herein you shall find little geography and even less science, except it be such as all may take, by favour of the gods, from pleasure trips into the lands of Thought and among the Hills of Vanity. A little chronicle, Madam, in memory of glad sunlit days, Of cheery companions, and the joy of living. NO great matter at best, and yet, to those who, smoking tolerant pipes, perceive -through the haze something of relative values, our boat and its affairs may, from a philosophic standpoint, be as worthy of attention as any of the world shaking matters that reverberate from the House by the River at Westminster. Book Last Boat Out of Shanghai

Download or read book Last Boat Out of Shanghai written by Helen Zia and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The dramatic, real-life stories of four young people caught up in the mass exodus of Shanghai in the wake of China's 1949 Communist Revolution--a precursor to the struggles faced by emigrants today. Shanghai has historically been China's jewel, its richest, most modern and westernized city. The bustling metropolis was home to sophisticated intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and a thriving middle class when Mao's proletarian revolution emerged victorious from the long civil war. Terrified of the horrors the Communists would wreak upon their lives, citizens of Shanghai who could afford to fled in every direction. Seventy years later, the last generation to fully recall this massive exodus have opened the story to Chinese American journalist Helen Zia, who interviewed hundreds of exiles about their journey through one of the most tumultuous events of the twentieth century. From these moving accounts, Zia weaves the story of four young Shanghai residents who wrestled with the decision to abandon everything for an uncertain life as refugees in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the U.S. Young Benny, who as a teenager became the unwilling heir to his father's dark wartime legacy, must choose between escaping Hong Kong or navigating the intricacies of a newly Communist China. The resolute Annuo, forced to flee her home with her father, a defeated Nationalist official, becomes an unwelcome young exile in Taiwan. The financially strapped Ho fights deportation in order to continue his studies in the U.S. while his family struggles at home. And Bing, given away by her poor parents, faces the prospect of a new life among strangers in America"--

Book With Boat and Gun in the Yangtze Valley Classic Reprint

Download or read book With Boat and Gun in the Yangtze Valley Classic Reprint written by Henling Thomas Wade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Boat and Gun in the Yangtze Valley One reason why the foreigner does not make to-day the huge bags of yore may possibly be that he does not put in that amount of hard work and enthusiasm which characterized the shooters of days gone by. There is a regrettable apathy born of the luxury inseparable from a shooting trip now-a-days undreamt of in the past. But the most despond'ent of those who bewail that we are fast coming to the end of our shooting tether may take heart of grace from the knowledge that game has been in most abundant supply all the past season, and that prices on the average have seldom been more reasonable. The ground and ying game of this favoured valley is plentiful enough, and good bags will for a long time yet result from assiduous and intelligent work. Places like Wuhu, Tatung and Tungliu, amongst many others, must ever remain sanctuaries until such time as the expenses attendant upon reaching them shall be very considerably lessened, while no amount of legitimate shooting can or will ever make any diminution in the countless numbers Of the migratory birds, be they Wildfowl, woodcocks or snipes, whose close season Nature herself has determined and no mortal can hasten or retard, or set aside. Naturally enough there would be much more shooting in what may be termed the houseboat radius were the municipally called close season for partridges, pheasants and quail not so wilfully and obviously disregarded. There are, unfortunately, people who eat, and who, worse still, glory in eating, game right through the summer, while the mail and coast steamers carry away birds in thousands all the year round. A betterment worth working for would be to get the Chinese Government to make the export of game during certain times of the year punishable by law, and to seek the co-operation of the French and International Municipal Councils and the Agents of the several steam ship lines to carry that law, as far as they were able, into effect. The disease is here we wait for the physician. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fast Boat to China

Download or read book Fast Boat to China written by Andrew Ross and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans today are aware that jobs are being outsourced to China, India, and other nations at an alarming rate. From factory jobs to white-collar, high-tech positions, the exporting of labor is one of the most controversial issues in America.Yet few people know much about the other end — about the people who are actually working these jobs and how their own lives have been throw into tumult by these new economic forces. Andrew Ross spent a year in China, interviewing local employees and their managers in Taiwan, Shanghai, and the far western provinces. In this engaging and informative book, he shows how the Chinese workforce has inherited many of the same worries as American workers, such as job instability, long hours, and awareness of their own expendability. He reports on the daily reality of corporate free trade and explores the growing competition between China and India. This is an eye-opening exploration of an unseen side of our globalized world.

Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of Waiting and War Trash: an urgent, timely novel that follows an aspiring author, an outrageous book idea, and a lone journalist's dogged quest for truth in the Internet age. New York, 2005. Chinese expatriate Feng Danlin is a fiercely principled reporter at a small news agency that produces a website read by the Chinese diaspora around the world. Danlin's explosive exposés have made him legendary among readers--and feared by Communist officials. But his newest assignment may be his undoing: investigating his ex-wife, Yan Haili, an unscrupulous novelist who has willingly become a pawn of the Chinese government in order to realize her dreams of literary stardom. Haili's scheme infuriates Danlin both morally and personally--he will do whatever it takes to expose her as a fraud. But in outing Haili, he is also provoking her powerful political allies, and he will need to draw on all of his journalistic cunning to emerge from this investigation with his career--and his life--still intact. A brilliant, darkly funny story of corruption, integrity, and the power of the pen, The Boat Rocker is a tour de force of modern fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid history of the relationship between Britain and China, from 1600 to the present The relationship between Britain and China has shaped the modern world. Chinese art, philosophy and science have had a profound effect upon British culture, while the long history of British exploitation is still bitterly remembered in China today. But how has their interaction changed over time? From the early days of the East India Company through the violence of the Opium Wars to present-day disputes over Hong Kong, Kerry Brown charts this turbulent and intriguing relationship in full. Britain has always sought to dominate China economically and politically, while China's ideas and exports--from tea and Chinoiserie to porcelain and silk--have continued to fascinate in the west. But by the later twentieth century, the balance of power began to shift in China's favour, with global consequences. Brown shows how these interactions changed the world order--and argues that an understanding of Britain's relationship with China is now more vital than ever.
