Book Hostile Fire

Download or read book Hostile Fire written by Philip Bigler and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early morning hours of June 8, 1969, a Soviet-built 122-mm rocket slammed into ward 4 of the 312th Evacuation Hospital in Chu Lai, Vietnam. Lt. Sharon A. Lane, a young, attractive 24-year-old nurse from Canton, Ohio, died instantly. Though seven other American military nurses lost their lives serving in Vietnam, Lt. Lane was the only American service-woman killed as a direct result of enemy fire throughout the war. Her life and untimely death have come to epitomize the duty, honor, and sacrifice of the almost 11,000 American military and naval nurses who served the country during the Vietnam ara. Hostile Fire is based on extensive interviews with veterans, family, and friends; a review of official records; and Lt. Lane's own letters home which were carefully preserved by her family. The author paints a picture of a vibrant and dedicated young woman, tragically killed just as her adult life was beginning.Skillfully placed within the historical and political context of the period, the story provides the reader with a powerful and personal look at Vietnam and those who served.

Book Unfit For Command

Download or read book Unfit For Command written by John E. O'Neill and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-08-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What sort of combination of hypocrite and paradox is John Kerry?" asks this heated critique of the Democratic presidential candidate’s Vietnam–era military service and antiwar activism. O’Neill, a lawyer and swift boat veteran, and Corsi, an expert on Vietnam antiwar movements, show how Kerry misrepresented his wartime exploits and is therefore incompetent to serve as commander in chief. Buttressed by interviews with Navy veterans who patrolled Vietnam’s waters, some along with Kerry, readers will discover how he exaggerated minor injuries, self-inflicted others, wrote fictitious diary entries and filed "phony" reports of his heroism under fire—all in a calculated quest to secure career-enhancing combat medals.

Book excerpt: Clay Sanders has learned a great deal since the world stopped working. One of those lessons is that while he may run out of everything else, especially patience, he never seems to run out of problems. His grandfather, who believed him when Clay came home with a fantastic tale of coming destruction, the man who helped him organize and implement the plan to save his family, is slowly succumbing to old age, his health failing. His mother has more or less stopped speaking to him. Awkward when you live a hundred yards away. The nearby town that was his boyhood stomping ground is struggling to get back on her feet with the farm's assistance, but the town also has elements that have a strong dislike for Clay and don't mind making it known, even to the point of outright lies. It seems as if someone is always thinking they are somehow entitled to 'their fair share' of everything the Sanders have worked for over a half-dozen generations. No matter how much they help, it's never enough. Now there's a destructive survivalist group that has terrorized rural areas to the south and is now looking toward Clay's neighborhood as their next conquest. Their motto is simple; if they can take it, they deserve it. Yes sir, problems are one thing that Clayton Sanders never seems to run out of. Even at the end of the world as we know it. Book excerpt: In 1986, the Cold War was winding down, yet under the seas the game of cat and mouse between Soviet and American submarines continued unabated. Off the coast of North Carolina, an aging Soviet ballistic missile submarine suffered a catastrophe accident and came within moments of melting down. Had it exploded, the entire East Coast of the U.S. would have been blanketed in radioactive fallout. The death toll would have made Chernobyl seem like a traffic accident. This is the gripping, true story of 60 young Soviet men who fought--and died--to save our lives. Photo insert. Foreward by Tom Clancy. Martin's Press.

Book National Safety Culture Change Initiative

Download or read book National Safety Culture Change Initiative written by United States Fire Administration and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling and extinguishing hostile fire comes at a great cost to human life and seondarily at great financial expense. Despite improvements in personal protective equipment (PPE), apparatus safety devices, more availability of training, greater emphasis on firefighter health and wellness, and decreases in the number of fires and dollar loss due to fires, the rate of on-duty firefighter death and injury has remained relatively unchanged in the past four decades. The National Safety Culture Change Initiative (NSCCI) project is a joint partnership of the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) aimed at identifying both positive and negative culture and climate found in the American fire and emergency service community. NSCCI, through this study and its website, www.ffsafetyculture.org, and other project efforts, will identify adverse behaviors and recommend changes to both culture and climate for occupational safety and health within the fire and emergency service.
