Book excerpt: Looking for a science book that your child will want to read? This rhyming picture book has two stories in one! "Bonding with Friends: H2O & Helium" has a story about the water molecule and another story about helium. These stories are fun to read because of the rhyme and the concepts are easy to understand with colorful pictures. Children will be entertained by the vibrant illustrations, cute characters, and everyday references that all readers can relate to. This not only has a science lesson but also an inclusive message which teaches kids that it is perfectly acceptable to be an introvert which is how Helium behaves compared to other elements that bond to form molecules like water. These poems will appeal to a preschooler, the bright colors will appeal to a toddler, and the chemistry concepts will challenge an elementary or middle school reader. The illustrations that accompany the story provide examples of where these elements and molecules are found so that children can end the story with a practical understanding water and helium that can be applied to their everyday lives (washing their hands, bath time, seeing a party balloon, looking up at the stars, etc.). Book Handbook of Environmental Isotope Geochemistry

Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Isotope Geochemistry written by Mark Baskaran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications of radioactive and stable isotopes have revolutionized our understanding of the Earth and near-earth surface processes. The utility of the isotopes are ever-increasing and our sole focus is to bring out the applications of these isotopes as tracers and chronometers to a wider audience so that they can be used as powerful tools to solve environmental problems. New developments in this field remain mostly in peer-reviewed journal articles and hence our goal is to synthesize these findings for easy reference for students, faculty, regulators in governmental and non-governmental agencies, and environmental companies. While this volume maintains its rigor in terms of its depth of knowledge and quantitative information, it contains the breadth needed for wide variety problems and applications in the environmental sciences. This volume presents all of the newer and older applications of isotopes pertaining to the environmental problems in one place that is readily accessible to readers. This book not only has the depth and rigor that is needed for academia, but it has the breadth and case studies to illustrate the utility of the isotopes in a wide variety of environments (atmosphere, oceans, lakes, rivers and streams, terrestrial environments, and sub-surface environments) and serves a large audience, from students and researchers, regulators in federal, state and local governments, and environmental companies.

Book Morris William Travers A Lifetime of Achievement

Download or read book Morris William Travers A Lifetime of Achievement written by Keith Kostecka and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morris William Travers – A Lifetime of Achievement This book chronicles the remarkable life and accomplishments of Professor Morris William Travers. It covers his entire life and showcases his accomplishments as a scientist, educator, administrator, industrialist and author and encompasses: the history of his family and his early life; his work in setting up Bristol University; India and setting up the Indian Institute of Science; his work in England from 1914 to 1937; and the accomplishments and affairs of his later years. In addition, this book shows the visionary nature and ideas of Professor Travers and his impeccable sense of honor and integrity in dealing with others. In describing this book, I feel that it is best to do so by talking about different parts of the life of Professor Travers. PART ONE The name Travers came from unknown origin though the first Travers in England may have been a chief in the Norman army and may have fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. There were also individuals with variations of the Travers name who settled in America and had some importance in politics of early America. In England, there were Travers family members who were bankers, members of the Royal Society and even one who was a double agent during the war against Napoleon. William Travers, Morris’s father, was a well-known doctor and one of the early practitioners of aseptic surgery while Morris’s mother Anne came from a well-to-do family that had some naval and theological importance in England. Morris (born on January 24th, 1872) and his siblings were cared for by a series of nannies, nurses and maids. Though William’s medical practice was doing well, his children lived simply. Pocket money for the children was limited though William and Anne did take their family on many happy country holidays. Morris received his early education at Ramsgate, Woking College and at Blundell’s School. While at Blundell’s, he excelled in Chemistry but had significant difficulty with Latin. He entered University College in London in 1891. It is likely that an interest in science for Morris Travers had a good deal to do with his father who always felt he had to read more about his field just to keep up and visits to the Regent Street Polytechnic and the Electrical Exhibition at the Crystal Palace. He, unlike most of his classmates, enjoyed the weekly chemistry lectures he received at Blundell’s. William’s encouragement was also important in Morris’s choosing to study at University College in London. Though he enjoyed zoology, Morris soon fell under the tutelage of Ramsay and Plimpton. He earned his B.Sc. in 1893 and began advanced study of chemistry later that same year. Though he had entertained working with Haller in France to earn his Ph.D., Morris became fascinated with the discovery of a new gas by Ramsay [helium] and began work on the properties of the new gas. He was invited by Ramsay to stay and look for the element with mass of 20. This effort led to the discovery of neon. Further work with Ramsay and Hampson on liquefying the components of air brought about the discovery of first krypton and then xenon. Morris, who had great mechanical aptitude and some ability as a draftsman, then was given the task of isolating hydrogen to separate neon from a mixture of air and helium. He built an apparatus that so allowed the isolation of liquid [and solid] hydrogen to make such a separation for neon and then began a study of its properties. He is first asked if he would be interested in being the Director of the proposed Indian institute of Science and publishes his first book “The Experimental Study of Gases”. He works on developing temperature scales by measuring the vapor pressures of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, meets his future wife Dorothy Gray and begins searching for an academi

Second on Parker’s list: find a nice man to have a no-strings-attached summer fling with…if that’s even possible in a small town. Having to fend for herself financially for the first time in her life, Parker signs on as a florist’s assistant and starts to find out who she really is. Book Accidental Astronomy

  • Publisher : Basic Books

  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Accidental Astronomy written by Chris Lintott and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "riveting real-life Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (The Telegraph) and "whirlwind tour of wondrous celestial phenomena" (The Idler) shows why so much of astronomy comes down to looking up and lucking out If you learn about the scientific method, you learn that first we hypothesize about something we’ve experienced, and then we look for more of it. This works well enough—but what if you are interested in studying a heretofore unknown comet or supernova? That is the essential problem of the astronomer: the most important discoveries happen without notice! Indeed, as Chris Lintott argues in Accidental Astronomy, luck defines astronomy. Lintott explores the ways in which happenstance shapes how we investigate the sky. To catch a glimpse of a comet, asteroid, or even a sign of alien life, we must be in the right place at the right time. And if we can’t be there, we must have a team of professionals and amateurs, across the globe, ready to spring into action at a moment’s—or a night’s—notice. For any astronomer, regardless of their experience or resources, the first step to discovery is the same: to stare at the sky and wait. A celebration of astronomy, stargazing, and cosmic discovery, Accidental Astronomy offers an irresistible window into how luck defines our knowledge of the skies.

Download or read book Isotope Geochemistry written by William M. White and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to radiogenic and stable isotope geochemistry. Beginning with a brief overview of nuclear physics and nuclear origins, it then reviews radioactive decay schemes and their use in geochronology. A following chapter covers the closely related techniques such as fission-track and carbon-14 dating. Subsequent chapters cover nucleosynthetic anomalies in meteorites and early solar system chronology and the use of radiogenic isotopes in understanding the evolution of the Earth’s mantle, crust, and oceans. Attention then turns to stable isotopes and after reviewing the basic principles involved, the book explores their use in topics as diverse as mantle evolution, archeology and paleontology, ore formation, and, particularly, paleoclimatology. A following chapter explores recent developments including unconventional stable isotopes, mass-independent fractionation, and isotopic ‘clumping’. The final chapter reviews the isotopic variation in the noble gases, which result from both radioactive decay and chemical fractionations.
