Book excerpt: Honour is a Biblical principle. God's Word is quite specific concerning our need to honour one another both as individuals and as communities. We are to honour people in positions of authority and responsibility over us including parents. Teachers, social and local leaders, government representatives, authorities, police and so on. The purpose of this book is to bring awareness and a return to the principle of honour. God has principles we are to live by - honour being among the most prevalent - if we wish to have a full, satisfying and significant life. So, are you a person of honour? Would you like to be? Become honour bound in your life as you understand the inner workings and purpose of honour. No matter where you are now, whether you already believe in and give honour, or you deal with honour lightly, this book will help you to make good choices in what and who you honour in the future. When you honour others and treat them with kindness, it is literally as though you are doing the same for God himself.

Book Honour in African History

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Iliffe
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780521837859
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Honour in African History written by John Iliffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first published account of the role played by ideas of honour in African history from the fourteenth century to the present day. It argues that appreciation of these ideas is essential to an understanding of past and present African behaviour. Before European conquest, many African men cultivated heroic honour, others admired the civic virtues of the patriarchal householder, and women honoured one another for industry, endurance, and devotion to their families. These values both conflicted and blended with Islamic and Christian teachings. Colonial conquest fragmented heroic cultures, but inherited ideas of honour found new expression in regimental loyalty, respectability, professionalism, working-class masculinity, the changing gender relationships of the colonial order, and the nationalist movements which overthrew that order. Today, the same inherited notions obstruct democracy, inspire resistance to tyranny, and motivate the defence of dignity in the face of AIDS.

Book Why Honor Matters

  • Publisher : Hachette UK

Download or read book Why Honor Matters written by Tamler Sommers and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A controversial call to put honor at the center of morality To the modern mind, the idea of honor is outdated, sexist, and barbaric. It evokes Hamilton and Burr and pistols at dawn, not visions of a well-organized society. But for philosopher Tamler Sommers, a sense of honor is essential to living moral lives. In Why Honor Matters, Sommers argues that our collective rejection of honor has come at great cost. Reliant only on Enlightenment liberalism, the United States has become the home of the cowardly, the shameless, the selfish, and the alienated. Properly channeled, honor encourages virtues like courage, integrity, and solidarity, and gives a sense of living for something larger than oneself. Sommers shows how honor can help us address some of society's most challenging problems, including education, policing, and mass incarceration. Counterintuitive and provocative, Why Honor Matters makes a convincing case for honor as a cornerstone of our modern society.

This practical book tells numerous engaging stories that highlight ethically complex situations many cybersecurity and tech professionals commonly encounter. It also contains compelling real-world case studies – called Critical Applications – at the end of each chapter that help the reader determine how to apply the hands-on skills described in the book. You'll also find: A complete system of cybersecurity ethics relevant to C-suite leaders and executives, front-line cybersecurity practitioners, and students preparing for careers in cybersecurity. Book excerpt: Love and Honour? Marriage for Peace, exposes the ongoing phenomenon of Romeo and Juliet style romance tragedy; families killing their own and other families' daughters, sons, sisters and brothers in the name of family 'honour". Focused on Northern India and Nepal, the stories illustrate that despite India adopting a democratic constitution in 1950, the public murder of forbidden lovers continues. Media reports of this phenomenon did not surface until 1993, but have increased dramatically since then. Love and Honour? Marriage for Peace has been written to seek a path from murder to reconciliation, to acceptance and ultimately to marriage for peace.
