Sandars "Honore de Balzac: His Life and Writings" is a complete biography that delves into the lifestyles and literary contributions of one of the maximum influential French novelists of the nineteenth century. The biography begins with the aid of chronicling Balzac's early life, upbringing, and the formative studies that fashioned his worldview. It delves into his literary ambitions and the demanding situations he faced in setting up himself as a writer. Balzac's voracious urge for food for literature and his interactions with other distinguished figures of his time are thoroughly examined, providing readers insights into the highbrow milieu of 19th-century France. Book Honore de Balzac

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac: His Life and Writings Although it was published nine years ago, Miss Mary F. Sandars's "Balzac" remains a valuable piece of work, and I am extremely glad that it has been thought advisable to reproduce it in a new shape. It is a useful book for many reasons. In the first place it gives, without too lengthy criticism of particular works of Balzac, a most readable account of a complicated and interesting life. In the next place it is based on those "Lettres a I'Etrangere" which Balzac wrote to his Polish friend Madame Hanska, in the absence of which we have no means of ascertaining the inner life of the distinguished author. Books like those of Sir Frederick Wedmore in the "Great Writers" Series, or Miss Wormeley's Memoir, have become out of date. Mr. Saintsbury's various critical notices retain their original value, but, of course, the real source of much of our present knowledge is due to the collections of M. de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul together with various pamphlets replete with all the conscientious zeal of a thoroughgoing admirer. As Miss Sandars herself notes, Dr. George Brandes has written some valuable chapters in one of the volumes of his "Main Currents of Nineteenth-Century Literature," which, however, do not deal with the details of the novelist's life, but rather with the position which he holds in modern literature. Although Balzac was a prolific writer finishing over ninety works in his life time he left many unfinished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Books about Balzac would fill a fair-sized library. Criticisms on his novels abound, and his contemporaries have provided us with several amusing volumes dealing in a humorous spirit with his eccentricities, and conveying the impression that the author of "La Cousine Bette" and "Le Pere Goriot" was nothing more than an amiable buffoon. Nevertheless, by some strange anomaly, there exists no Life of him derived from original sources, incorporating the information available since the appearance of the volume called "Lettres a l'Etrangere. " This book, which is the source of much of our present knowledge of Balzac, is a collection of letters written by him from 1833 to 1844 to Madame Hanska, the Polish lady who afterwards became his wife."

Three lives intertwine in Paris: an old man, a criminal and a law student. The novel evokes an unstable period in France, when many were desperate to climb the social ladder into the upper classes, and it questions social institutions such as marriage. The city is an important presence in this work. Balzac was both praised and censured for his realistic portrayal of city life.

Book excerpt: Le Père Goriot (French pronunciation: [lə pɛʁ ɡɔʁjo], Old Goriot or Father Goriot) is an 1835 novel by French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), included in the Scènes de la vie privée section of his novel sequence La Comédie humaine. Set in Paris in 1819, it follows the intertwined lives of three characters: the elderly doting Goriot, a mysterious criminal-in-hiding named Vautrin and a naive law student named Eugène de Rastignac.Originally published in serial form during the winter of 1834-35, Le Père Goriot is widely considered Balzac's most important novel.[1] It marks the first serious use by the author of characters who had appeared in other books, a technique that distinguishes Balzac's fiction. The novel is also noted as an example of his realist style, using minute details to create character and subtext.
