Book Changing Prejudice in Hungary

Download or read book Changing Prejudice in Hungary written by Koos André Postma and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on sociological surveys conducted in Hungary in 1987, 1992, and 1993, tests a theory which attributes the growth of ethnic prejudices against Gypsies and Jews in the post-communist period to the impact of economic transformations in the 1990s which brought about a deterioration in the quality of life. Hypothesizes that an individual faced with uncompensated deterioration of social production functions will blame a minority group (scapegoat) as well as find an alternative source of social approval, which leads him to overestimate his ingroup (Hungarians) and underestimate outgroups (Gypsies, Jews). However, the survey data do not support this hypothesis. The level of the respondents' social losses does not correlate significantly with the extent of their prejudice against Jews. Concludes that national identity is not used in Hungary as a vehicle to enhance social identity or produce alternative social approval. Also, groups other than Jews and Gypsies are victims of scapegoating. Therefore, the hypothesis must be rejected and other studies be taken up to account for the phenomenon of prejudice.

Book Monarchies States Generals and Parliaments

Download or read book Monarchies States Generals and Parliaments written by H. G. Koenigsberger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book charts the history of the States General - the parliament - of the Netherlands and its relations with two phases of monarchical rule in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Unlike the English parliament, the States General was a composite body, representing the local estates of the separate provinces which were anxious to keep their autonomy. The history of the States General was determined by this structure, and by its relations with the monarchy: dukes of Burgundy in the fifteenth century, and Spanish Habsburgs in the sixteenth. Ideally, everyone was meant to cooperate. In practice, there was already a major crisis by the 1480s, and divisions from the 1560s led to decades of civil war. By 1600 the Netherlands had split between the United Provinces - a parliamentary regime, governed as a republic by the States General - and the Spanish Netherlands.

In Spring in Prague the narrator and his Moslem friend Shyam, the publisher of Progressive Islam and a conspirator in an Indonesian coup, meet in Prague after 25 years of silence. Book Jan van Eyck and Portugal s Illustrious Generation

Download or read book Jan van Eyck and Portugal s Illustrious Generation written by Barbara von Barghahn and published by Pindar Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates Jan Van Eyck's patronage by the Crown of Portugal and his role as diplomat-painter for the Duchy of Burgundy following his first voyage to Lisbon in 1428-1429, when he painted two portraits of Infanta Isabella, who became the third wife of Philip the Good in 1430. New portrait identifications are provided for the Ghent Altarpiece (1432) and its iconographical prototype, the lost Fountain of Life. These altarpieces are analysed with regard to King Joao I's conquest of Ceuta, achieved by his sons, who were hailed as an "illustrious generation." Strong family ties between the dynastic houses of Avis and Lancaster explain Lusitania's sustained fascination with Arthurian lore and the Grail quest. Several chapters of this book are overlaid with a chivalric veneer. A second "secret mission" to Portugal in 1437 by Jan van Eyck is postulated and this diplomatic visit is related to Prince Henry the Navigator's expedition to Tangier and King Duarte's attempts to forge an alliance with Alfonso V of Aragon. Late Eyckian commissions are reviewed in the light of this ill-fated crusade and additional new portraits are identified. The most significant artist of Renaissance Flanders appears to have been patronized as much by the House of Avis as by the Duchy of Burgundy. Barbara von Barghahn is Professor of Art History at George Washington University and a specialist in the art history of Portugal, Spain, and their colonial dominions, as well as Flanders. In 1993, she was conferred O Grao Comendador in the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry the Navigator. She has spent nearly a decade completing research about Jan van Eyck's diplomatic visits to the Iberian Peninsula.

Download or read book The Grand Finale written by Anton Wessels and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often hear that we are living in apocalyptic times. Wars like those in the Middle East are just more signs that the end is near. That, however, is a misunderstanding of the message of the Bible and the Qur’an. The basic meaning of “apocalypse” is disclosure, revelation, bringing to light what is happening now and what has happened throughout all of history. The “apocalypse” is not about making predictions about the future but about determining who bears responsibility for injustice in the world. In that sense, all times—including ours—are “apocalyptic,” though in a different way than what is usually thought. Since the devastating Greek conquest of the world by Alexander the Great, there have been apocalyptic insights and “revelatory” readings of the whole Hebrew Bible. The same is true of the New Testament with “Rome” as the world power then. The same apocalyptic message is confirmed by the Qur’an when the Byzantines and the Persians fought for mastery of the world. The apocalyptic message is that God will put an end to the unjust dominion of violence, money, and lies. God’s kingdom will certainly arrive, but not through violence—after all, there “is no violence in God” (Diognetus).
