Book The Decoration of Houses

Download or read book The Decoration of Houses written by Edith Wharton and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individuality in house-furnishing has seldom been more harped upon than at the present time. The cheap originality which finds expression in putting things to uses for which they were not intended is often confounded with individuality; whereas the latter consists not in an attempt to be different from other people at the cost of comfort, but in the desire to be comfortable in one's own way, even though it be the way of a monotonously large majority. It seems easier to most people to arrange a room like some one else's than to analyze and express their own needs. -from Chapter II: "Rooms in General" This classic 1898 manual of interior design is considered a standard reference of the art, and perfectly useful more than a century later. Here, renowned American architect OGDEN CODMAN, JR. (1863-1951) is joined by American author EDITH WHARTON (1862-1937), whose novels, including The House of Mirth (1905) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Age of Innocence (1920), took us into the wealthy-and tasteful-New York society she hailed from. Together, they offer timeless advice on such matters as: [ the importance of balance and symmetry [ how to avoid the superficial application of ornament [ the necessity of adhering to proportion [ the proper material for fireplace andirons [ the usages of cornices [ the decoration of windows [ and much, much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Homes, and How to Beautify Them T is the way with some authors, when they desire to believe they have written a useful book, to say in the preface that it supplies a long-felt want. I should be glad if I could console myself with a similar pious fraud. But to advance such a plea, having regard to the large number of books which have been printed about furniture and the decoration of the house, would be to court sarcastic comment. For truly the name of such books is already legion. To begin with, there are the Histories of Furniture from the earliest periods to the present time profound, and occasionally interesting, compilations. Then there are the Books of Designs issued by furniture makers like Chippendale, Sheraton and Ince - forerunners of the modern Furniture Catalogue. Then there are the great number of pamphlets, treatises, and brochures written on the subject of Art in the Home, in which ladies with a pretty taste dogmatise in the nicest afternoon-tea manner on how to make artistic lamp-shades, paint door - panels, and beautify a drawing room with aesthetic remnants at I/rr% a yard. Book Successful Houses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Successful Houses Classic Reprint written by Oliver Coleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Houses There are comparatively few people who at one time or another do not have to face the problem of household furniture and decoration, and who do not at such times experience a sensation of comparative helplessness. To assist them there have been published two classes of books only, one in which the information is of the most shocking character, utterly devoid of taste, judgment or good sense; the other in which the laws are of a learned and technical character, but difficult of application by private persons in their own homes. Many of the latter class of publications are great authority, and could their intent be thoroughly absorbed would lead to radical improvements in the popular ideal of household decoration; but unfor tunately, besides the ponderous text, the illustrations are usually chosen from views of palaces and other great houses, and convey no suggestions to the discouraged housewife with a few hundred dollars to expend at most. The author in this volume has attempted to take another course, to describe, without formulae, certain undeniable principles, to indicate their application, and to illustrate the result by giving pictures of the interiors of eminently good houses. Some of these are inexpensive, some compara tively costly, but all are the homes of private citizens without any especial pretense of great wealth. The author is indebted for this opportunity to the series of articles published in The House Beautiful, entitled Successful Houses, for which the owners have allowed these photographs to be taken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Dignified: Its Design, Its Arrangement, and Its Decoration Having no national criterions to guide us, we have been obliged to seek those furnished by older civilisa tions, as have all peoples, for the matter of that, whose history has been parallel to our own. This, then, is not to our discredit. That which is to our dis credit is our tendency to keep following new crazes, trusting to our recently acquired millions to aecom plish that which it has taken others centuries to pro duce. The result has been chaos and confusion, the one dominant note being oftenest one of mere vanity - the vanity of possessions. Book Interiors Beautiful and the Decoration of the Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Interiors Beautiful and the Decoration of the Home Classic Reprint written by M. L. Keith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interiors Beautiful and the Decoration of the Home Perhaps no feature of the house is of more importance than the hall. It is there, the first impressions of the dwel ling and its inmates are received. It should have an atmosphere of dignity, yet friendliness. It should invite, not repel. It should be generous, and not mean or niggardly. A small, narrow, cramped hall in a house of any preten sion, at once stamps the character of the owner. Nothing lends such dignity and charm to the hall as the staircase, when well designed. And perhaps among all the types none is so attractive as the Colonial, either curving in graceful lines, or in a straight flight to the floor above. The combination of white spindles and dark mahogany is quite irresistable. Many forms of this favorite type are herewith illustrated. Book Classical Principles for Modern Design

Download or read book Classical Principles for Modern Design written by Thomas Jayne and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interior designer and decorative arts historian Thomas Jayne takes on the redoubtable Edith Wharton and her co-author Ogden Codman, whose 1897 book The Decoration of Houses is acknowledged as the Bible of American interior design. Wharton and Codman advocated for classical simplicity and balance, replacing the excesses of the Gilded Age. In Jayne’s view, “The Decoration of Houses is the level-headed, indispensable book on the subject. It is not an overstatement to say that it is the most important decorating book ever written.” How much of Wharton and Codman’s advice and how many of their principles are still applicable today? In Classical Principles for Modern Design, Jayne argues that Wharton and Codman’s fundamental ideas about the proportion and planning of space create the most harmonious and livable interiors, whether traditional or contemporary. His authoritative and engaging text traces contemporary ideas about design elements and furnishing rooms back to Wharton and Codman and shows where his design approach coincides and where it diverges from their views. The book follows the chapter organization of The Decoration of Houses—chapters on walls, doors, windows and curtains, ceilings and floors, etc.—and adds important new perspectives on the design of kitchens and the use of color, both major subjects that Wharton and Codman did not address. Drawing on his own work at Jayne Design Studio, Jayne has selected elegant, traditional interiors that demonstrate these principles. Projects range from a restoration of historic eighteenth-century public rooms in Crichel House in Dorset, England, to a mountain retreat in the wilds of Montana to an array of luxurious New York City apartments and country houses in the Hudson Valley. Captured in lush photographs by Don Freeman and others, all speak to Thomas Jayne’s commitment to the primacy of function, quality, and simplicity, derived from the ancient tradition of classical design. As he says, “Tradition is not about what was. Tradition is now.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in the House: Historical, Critical, and sthetical Studies on the Decoration and Urnishing of the Dwelling The description which we have given of Egyptian houses in general applies also to palaces, whose plan was identical, though on a far grander scale. Approached, like temples, through avenues of human or ram headed sphinxes, they con sisted of a series of courts surrounded by colonnades, to which pylons of colossal proportions gave entrance, and of many small chambers occupied by the king, his wives and children, and the officers of his household with their attendants. There were also several sanctuaries dedicated to as many divinities, where the king, who was deified during life, worshipped his own image as well as the images of his ancestors, and took part in other sacred rites. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inside the House Beautiful: A Collection of Interior Views Showing Furnishings and Their Arrangement No attempt is made, therefore, in the pages of this book to set forth the principles of interior decoration. The writer believes that, for the prae tical uses of such principles by the owners of modest homes, as much can be learned from good example as from a study of theory. If a few of the illustrations-imply furnishings beyond the realm of the moderate-priced home, it is because there is some application of detail or arrangement which can be made to serve the purposes of owners of less pretentious dwellings. Book The House Beautiful and Useful

Download or read book The House Beautiful and Useful written by H. Elder-Duncan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Beautiful and Useful: Being Practical Suggestions on Furnishing and Decoration AT the Publishers' request, I have endeavoured to give in a fairly brief form some notes for the benefit of those who are faced with the problem of decorating 'and furnishing a home. There have been several works issued in recent years with a similar object in View; but their authors, as far as I can discover, have not kept in view the all-important ques tion of cost. To remedy this omission is one of the factors governing the appearance of the present volume. The ideal method of furnishing a home is to employ the services of a talented Architect and Craftsman, so that every piece of furniture and every scheme of decoration is an individual production - the only one of its kind - expressing the owner's taste and individuality. Unfortunately, such an ideal is only possible in the case of wealthy people. Nine-tenths of the population must continue to buy articles of furniture which are made to pattern by the dozen, and to employ schemes of decoration that have their counterpart in many other dwellings. It is the object of the following chapters to give some guidance to the selection of such furniture, and to indicate more or less desirable directions for decorative effort. While the majority of people cannot afford to employ an Architect or Craftsman, the person of average intellect and a certain amount of taste can do much for himself.
