At the end of their journey, they come across a clearing where they meet Wizard Whiskers, the town's famous entertainer. He begins telling them an exciting tale about a knight and a pirate's adventure in the forest on Halloween night. They discover that they have become characters in their own interesting story as the story comes to an end. As the hayride goes on, they see more magical things, like a nice witch, singing skeletons, and even a dragon that breathes bubbles. When they finally get back to the head of the forest, Scarecrow Sam says goodbye, and they can't stop talking about their trip. People thought that an old, wise owl living in a peaceful pond in the woods knew all the answers to all the world's problems. As it sat high on a branch, the owl would ask people walking by difficult questions. Anyone who tried to answer would find it fun and interesting. It was also famous for the crazy people that you could meet in the woods. From the bushes, giggling goblins with bright orange faces and polka-dotted leggings would come out and hand out sweets to happy guests. At the same time, talking animals would tell jokes and laugh together. Friendly ghosts would play in the woods, and a scarecrow with a pumpkin head could be seen singing creepy but catchy songs to visitors. A big part of the Pumpkin Hollow Forest experience was the campfire meeting, where storytellers like Wizard Whiskers told amazing stories that seemed to come to life in front of eager viewers. There were often brave heroes, smart pirates, and exciting adventures in these stories that made kids and adults feel like they could do anything. On the haunted hayride, people were led through this magical forest and came across some magical gifts along the way. To aid urban foresters and park managers in meeting the challenges, research on old growth forests in urban parks is synthesized in terms of historical ecology to introduce the methods utilized to reveal long-term forest composition changes. The case study of three stands in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA relates pre-chestnut blight tree species densities and post-chestnut blight arboreal changes to fire and visitor trampling. The information gained on how urban old growth forests have developed and changed is used to develop restoration ecology based frameworks to restore species composition and address challenges to forest survival including invasive species.

Book excerpt: Outside Russia very little is known about the terrestrial ecology, vegetation, biogeographical patterns, and biodiversity of the enormously extensive ecosystems of Yakutia, Siberia. These systems are very special in that they function on top of huge layers of permafrost and are exposed to very severe and extreme weather conditions, the range between winter and summer temperatures being more than 100 degrees C. The soils are generally poor, and human use of the vegetation is usually extensive. Main vegetation zones are taiga and tundra, but Yakutia also supports a special land and vegetation form, caused by permafrost, the alas: more or less extensive grasslands around roundish lakes in taiga. All these vegetation types will be described and their ecology and ecophysiological characteristics will be dealt with. Because of the size of Yakutia, covering several climatic zones, and its extreme position on ecological gradients, Yakutia contains very interesting biogeographical patterns, which also will be described. Our analyses are drawn from many years of research in Yakutia and from a vast body of ecological and other literature in Russian publications and in unpublished local reports. The anthropogenic influence on the ecosystems will be dealt with. This includes the main activities of human interference with nature: forestry, extensive reindeer herding, cattle and horse grazing, etc. Also fire and other prominent ecological factors are dealt with. A very important point is also the very high degree of naturalness that is still extant in Yakutia’s main vegetation zones.
