Book The Role of Renewable Energy Technology in Holistic Community Development

Download or read book The Role of Renewable Energy Technology in Holistic Community Development written by Alexander Zahnd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-25 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis documents almost twenty years of the author’s work on the development and implementation of a new approach to holistic community development in remote and disadvantaged villages in Nepal. It describes the theoretical basis of the work, the main research activities, and the practical outcomes of the implemented programs. One of the fundamental cornerstones of holistic community development is the provision of appropriate and sustainable solutions for the long-term development of local communities. This requires that people’s own identified needs be recognized and addressed in partnership with them in holistic ways. The author explains the many synergies that result from this holistic approach to community development. Another cornerstone of his approach is to utilise the communities’ locally available renewable resources for long-term sustainable development. One of the key findings of the thesis is that improved access to energy services, such as cooking with a smokeless metal stove in a clean indoor environment, basic indoor lighting, and increased food production and safe food storage (through a greenhouse and a solar drier respectively), need to be at the very heart of any long-term holistic community development project. The thesis demonstrates that tapping into locally available renewable energy resources and converting them, through contextualized and locally manufactured renewable energy technologies, has a central role in long-term holistic community development programs. Such programs are successful because they provide both appropriate technologies and life-changing experiences for the local users involved.

Download or read book A Holistic Approach to Rights written by Eugene Schlossberger and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying new theories about rights to pressing social issues, A Holistic Approach to Rights suggests major changes are needed in the ways we think about rights and formulating social policy. Part I analyzes rights as networks of warrants--socially recognized sanctions for doing, saying, demanding, believing, feeling, or thinking something as one's due. On this account, rights are more varied and play a more diverse and open-ended role in legal and moral thinking than most theories of rights allow. A new theory of natural rights treats them as claims that every person has upon the state, as a condition of legitimacy, to make adequate provision for those features of human life that require force against persons to be justified. Moral rights, such as the right to the truth, derive from team loyalty due fellow members of the moral community and can be lost by someone who acts in ways that undermine the moral enterprise. Part II provides detailed analyses of affirmative action, group rights, the rights of future generations, reproductive rights, the use of new reproductive technologies, and speech rights. Specific conclusions include an innovative proposal for regulating violence and pornography in the media.

Book Direct Democracy The Change Towards Holistic Politics

Download or read book Direct Democracy The Change Towards Holistic Politics written by Michalis Lianos and published by Michalis Lianos. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open manifesto for building direct democracy. It describes concrete political steps that fit the demands of the 21st century in many areas, such as democratic decision-making, random draws, electoral systems, institutions of governance, protection of minorities, avoidance of violent conflicts. The book deals with the main impasses of democracy: - How can we collectively hierarchise the political priorities over which we disagree? - How do we avoid the concentration of power and its use to the benefit of specific groups and classes? - How do we establish social justice even though we are individually oriented towards competition? - How do we handle as a society the fact that not all of us have comparable capacities and strengths? - Can a political system continuously transform itself, so as to apply the same principles in different circumstances? These major questions are addressed via an integrated proposal that seeks to move politics away from concentrations of power which obtain their own life and often turn us into resources for their purposes, i.e. break the "iron law of oligarchy". Political organisation is the key to social trust and social trust the key to a happy life. No amount of debate, competition or fighting can get us there. We need to organise and turn to our existence as simple, everyday citizens who keep at bay their hunger for power. Remaining simple is complicated, that is why we need a holistic political approach. Holistic Politics is a culture, an attitude between citizens. The term refers to examining our relations in a holistic way, i.e., as a whole; a total condition that deals in a direct democratic manner with our differences, and even our conflicts. Knowing each time that something is the genuine outcome of our collective free will, builds trust, tolerance and respect for difference, even when we disagree with that outcome. For a violent species that has dominated all others, this is the way forward.

Philosophers, political scientists, world leaders and many other people are looking for answers of these crucial questions. Every generation formulates its ideas, has its hopes and is searching for the next step of building a more just social order. According to the author of this book, society which implements the holistic model will find the way to peace and common prosperity! Every social problem is a result of application of a particular social model. If we aim that all members of society have the right to receive conditions for harmonious development, we should structure it in a way that relationships between all subjects are influencing beneficially the whole environment. It is necessary to create a new social model which is in the service to the whole, and not further developing the old egoistic ones. This will enable us to find comprehensive solutions of the modern global challenges. The holistic model, on which fundament is build a holistic society, relies on the spiritual truth that every human and every other living being are significant manifestation of the Absolute. In this book are derived the basic principles of functioning of new type of economy, which is not capitalistic, but a holistic one. In it the relationships are structured in a way to achieve optimal protection of the interest of humankind, animals, plants and Earth. The institute of humane restorative reaction is presented to replace, with strong arguments, the philosophy of repressive sanctioning in the criminal law. The holistic model is related with fundamentally different approach of social organizing, which can be applied by private organizations and by countries, which are willing to develop themselves in the service to the whole. Aleksandar Milanov is a jurist and a philosopher who has specialized in international space law and has developed further the concept of united humankind.

Book Saving Souls Serving Society

Download or read book Saving Souls Serving Society written by Heidi Rolland Unruh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen unprecedented attention to faith-based institutions as agents of social change, spurred in part by cuts in public funding for social services and accompanied by controversy about the separation of church and state. The debate over faith-based initiatives has highlighted a small but growing segment of churches committed to both saving souls and serving society. What distinguishes faith-based from secular activism? How do religious organizations express their religious identity in the context of social services? How do faith-based service providers interpret the connection between spiritual methodologies and socioeconomic outcomes? How does faith motivate and give meaning to social ministry? Drawing on case studies of fifteen Philadelphia-area Protestant churches with active outreach, Saving Souls, Serving Society seeks to answer these and other pressing questions surrounding the religious dynamics of social ministry. While church-based programs often look similar to secular ones in terms of goods or services rendered, they may show significant differences in terms of motivations, desired outcomes, and interpretations of meaning. Church-based programs also differ from one another in terms of how they relate evangelism to their social outreach agenda. Heidi Rolland Unruh and Ronald J. Sider explore how churches navigate the tension between their spiritual mission and the constraints on evangelism in the context of social services. The authors examine the potential contribution of religious dynamics to social outcomes as well as the relationship between mission orientations and social capital. Unruh and Sider introduce a new vocabulary for describing the religious components and spiritual meanings embedded in social action, and provide a typology of faith-based organizations and programs. Their analysis yields a framework for Protestant mission orientations that makes room for the diverse ways that churches interrelate spiritual witness and social compassion. Based on their observations, the authors offer a constructive approach to church-state partnerships and provide a far more objective understanding of faith-based social services than previously available.

Book The Holistic Inspirations of Physics

Download or read book The Holistic Inspirations of Physics written by Val Dusek and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books have claimed parallels between modern physics and Eastern philosophy, none have dealt with the historical influences of both Chinese traditional thought and non-mechanistic, holistic western thought on the philosophies of the scientists who developed electromagnetic field theory. In The Holistic Inspirations of Physics, R. Valentine Dusek asks: to what extent is classical field theory a product of organic and holistic philosophies and frameworks? Electromagnetic theory has been greatly influenced by holistic worldviews, Dusek posits, and he highlights three alternative scientific systems that made the development of electromagnetic theory possible: medieval Chinese science, Western Renaissance occultism, and the German romantic traditions. He situates these "alternative" approaches in their social context and background, and traces their connection with components of "accepted" physical science in relation to a number of social movements and philosophical theories. Readers will learn of specific contributions made by these alternative traditions, such as the Chinese inventing the compass and discovering the earth's magnetic field and magnetic declination. Western alchemical ideas of active forces and "occult" influences contributed to Newton's theory of gravitation force as action at a distance, rather as a result of purely mechanical collisions and contact action. Dusek also describes the extent to which women's culture supplied (often without credit) the philosophical background ideas that were absorbed into mainstream field theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human-centredness: A Challenge to Post-industrial Europe? The key power in industrial society has been linked to the possession of capital and factory. In the "information society" it could be rather different. If one accepts that that the key power in the information society will be linked not so much to the ownership of information but to human creativity nourished by that information, the productive force of today and tomorrow, could be more and more the human brain. Making use of one's intelligence is always accompanied by positive emotion, which in turn further activates the intelligence. But, unfortunately, under present conditions workers of all levels live in fear, anxiety and stress rather than desire and motivation. The question of "basic human ecology" (quality of life) is, therefore, a major strategic factor. It is precisely the opposite to the mechanisms of exclusion that currently dominate our society: exclusion of young people through joblessness - but also exclusion through technology, as with the helplessness of older people or the poorly educated confronted with ticket dispensing machines or other automats. This is not idle theorizing, it corresponds to concrete facts. It is, for example, how some observers interpret the crisis at IBM. Because its programs were less 'human-friendly', it was shaken to its foundations by Apple and Microsof- though it seems since to have learnt its lesson.

Book Holistic Dental Care

Download or read book Holistic Dental Care written by Stephen A. Lawrence and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-09-08 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen A. Lawrence introduces readers to holistic dental care and its role in overall health. Most people America would like to maintain healthy teeth and gums during their lifetime. While conventional dental care still relies on outdated treatment methods, including the use of toxic elements such as mercury and fluoride, this is not the way dentistry must be practiced, and more and more patients are beginning to realize that there are safer, more effective ways to care for their teeth and gums. Holistic Dental Care: Your Mind, Body, and Spirit Guide to Optimal Health and a Beautiful Smile presents a positive, detailed, and easy-to-read argument for the benefits of a more open-minded, progressive, and integrative approach to dental care and overall health. Scientific studies suggest that our mind/body relationship, psychological function, physical activity, and the food we eat all affect us at biological levels, where our habits can alter our immune system and affect our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. When we get sick on any level, from an ordinary cold to a cavity or gum disease, it’s usually because of some imbalance in our immune system, often triggered by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and toxins. Holistic dentistry addresses these issues by supporting a patient’s comprehensive health. Holistic dentist Stephen A. Lawrence’s new work introduces readers to safer, gentler, and more efficient way of treating their mouths and bodies, along with addressing their overall wellness. He offers a reader-friendly tour through how our body works, and approaches dental health through the lens of comprehensive wellness and summarizes current holistic dental healthcare ideas and products––to stop cavities and gum disease, rebuild teeth at home, and positively affect patients and those around them––as we strive to spread wellness worldwide. Considering the current explosion of green living all over America, the increased awareness of how toxins affect our health, and a rising interest in bettering our general quality of life through wellness and mindfulness, this work fills a gap in understanding how holistic dental health care can be part of an overall approach to healthier living now.
